  • I finally managed to get my hands on the two new Nikon Full Frame DSLRs. The D800 and the D4 and tested them alongside the Canon 5DmkIII.
    The tests were resolution, aliasing, low light and features.

    I use Novoflex adaptors, generally with Nikon and Pentax lenses. You can get adaptors that will enable using Canon EF lenses, but they're much more expensive than adaptors for lenses with a mechanical aperture.

    Just a quick revisit to this excellent demo of the time. First reaction ... My goodness how things have changed. I still own some of these cameras. Short of becoming door stops, I will use the 5Dmklll for stills but certainly not video. So many game changing developments since this was filmed.
    As always, content is king ... I still enjoy your old EX1 and EX3 videos as the content stands the test of time.

    I own a D800 and was considering using it for video. This review was wonderful in showing just what I wanted (and needed) to know about using that Nikon for video. So its a three and half year old review? So what … its solid information to know and quite usable info at that. Thank you Phillip for putting together the review and for leaving it up.

    Well, Phil, got my D4 this week and quite pleased. May not be best video camera in the world, but with a 35 year bag of Nikkor glass in hand and the opportunity to shoot stills and video in one piece of iron, I love it. After I saw this comparison this morning I tried my own with a 28-70 Nikkor f2.8.
    Thanks for your tireless work, I so enjoy them and learn so much from you. rg

    Did you look at the 4:2:2 footage from your PIX 240? I'd love to know how much better the footage holds up to colour grading, and if the moire, aliasing, and highlight rolloff see any changes. I've tried to shoot footage from the D800 to my Hyperdeck Shuttle, but the mirror refused to lock up as soon as the device was connected. I'd like to know if the results will be worth the hassle of getting it working.

    I like the D800 for rolling shutter and, the Mark3 is an animal in low light. All three of these machines are brilliant. Buy the one that will suit you best and don't get hung up on the brand. The manufacturer will only take you so far. The Imagination is what makes the art.

    Philip, that was a really helpful video. Thanks for making it.
    I own a D300 and have been looking for an update with video capability or to invest in more glass. Thanks to this review, I decided that neither D4 or D800 is for me. So, I will use my current savings to get more glass- 70-200 f/2.8. I could switch to 5d3, but then I don't have glass to go with it. So, I hope Nikon brings a nicer deal next time.

    And even some scenes of the Avengers were shot with dslr. They use it sometimes for extra angles, when all the pro gear they have just isnt enough, or is too big to fit a tiny space (where dslrs come in handy).

  • @thelug3r
    @thelug3r 12 лет назад

    It's called the rolling shutter effect, and it's a (very big) common problem with CMOS sensors that are in DSLR's. I don't know the exact science behind the reason, but all I know is that these cameras all have pretty much the best control over the jello effect (for their price range and intended market). Lower grade cameras have much much worse rolling shutter. As long as you keep your pans slow (and if thats difficult, use a smooth tripod) it shouldn't be that big of an issue.

    Is it just me (and the latest update to Firefox- 17.0.1- or do you all see this video as a 2.35:1 crop in the upper third of the screen? I'm sure it's me. Great video, though. Phillip is awesome a toeing the line between camera pUrn/tech nerd/ and personable host with all the relevant info whose really enjoyable to watch. Being someone who does a 65/35 split, video/photo, I'd probably still opt for the MKIII, just because I can't leave anything alone in post as it is.

  • @FanaticDrummer
    @FanaticDrummer 11 лет назад

    MK lll is a video camera with boosted ISO results, d800 is a specialty camera for resolution and optimal quality in stills and prints, not for every day use, and the d4 is the flagship dslr perfect in lowlight and capable of handling anything. I went with the d800e because I don't do video and needed that extra sharpness and resolution for gallery prints and client ads. The d4 is still the go to for professional published guys due to the body and its enough for magazine print.

    @philipbloom You probably already known about this, but just in case... the new 5DMIII firmware update now allows uncompressed HDMI output. Also via CanonRumors: "Magic Lantern has unlocked RAW video recording in the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. From early reports the quality of the video files is pretty amazing and might be better than the C300 and definitely better than the BlackMagic Cinema Camera."

    " I do like these low-light tests. " (Philip Bloom). I like this girl in all light and all low light. (And even more in no light, agreed?). (Pierre).
    Hello Phillip, you are perhaps aware how lucky you are to find this girl, but I know you love black boxes. I share that with you but I have to learn more from you. I appreciate your input and your very non-mainstream teaching. You are a very good teacher for a new kind of photography.

    Thanks for great reviews. They sort of make me know less, but on a higher level... Sometimes you wonder why someone doesn't just nail it, But i guess there is a lot of compromises in the politics of placing the cameras in a manufacturers line-up. I have such a hard time deciding, that I'm sticking to my Canon 7D for a while and try to make the best of it. So... still stuck with crop frame.... Some day some day... :)

    The problem of sharpness in MKIII is the low pass filter anti aliasing, the 6D does not have this problem, but the moriré and aliasing is the same of the D800, but the sharp quality too

    A good video, a nice set of tests =) The D4 might get fixed if it can be done in firmware. The low-light performance was crazy. If we have this now, what is to come of ISO performance..
    As a Pentax user I'm looking forward to testing the coming K-30. Full video manual control, finally. I wish a firmware update would fix it for the K-5, but I doubt it will happen. I'll copy your tests for the K-30 when I can get my hands on it to see how it performs :)
