This Mushroom Fakes Its Own Death To Trick Flies | Deep Look

- The cage fungus looks and smells like decaying meat - on purpose. Its goopy lattice gives off a rotten odor that attracts flies, which help spread its spores far and wide. It's like a bee to a flower, but way more macabre and putrid.

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
---
Cage fungus gets its name from the shape of its spongy lattice-shaped mushroom. “It's this kind of red-orange geodesic dome,” says naturalist Damon Tighe. “They can get up to the size of a softball and they're open on the inside where they've got this sticky, gooey substance called gleba.”
The gleba contains the fungus’ reproductive spores and it’s the gleba that gives the mushroom its fetid aroma.
“It reeks of death,” says Tighe. “If you get up close to it, there are these sharp notes that hit your nose that just make you recoil immediately.”
Flies that normally feed on stinky things like carrion and feces are drawn to the smell. They lap up the gleba, inadvertently downing millions of the spores and spreading them far and wide.
--- What is red cage fungus?
Clathrus ruber is a type of stinkhorn mushroom. Like most mushrooms, what you see above ground is only a small percent of the entire organism. Most of it is made up of a network of thin threads called the mycelium. When the conditions are right, the mycelium produces an “egg” that pops up above ground. When it's mature, the lattice structure called a receptacle bursts out from the “egg.”
--- Why do cage fungus smell so bad?
The gleba found on the inside surfaces of the cage fungus fruiting body contains compounds like dimethyl sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. The foul smell attracts flies that spread the fungus’ spores.
--- What do cage fungus eat?
Cage fungus is saprobic, feeding on dead and dying wood. The fungus’ mycelium digest the cellulose in the wood, returning nutrients to the soil.

This is very intriguing! I love the camera work around 4:03. You can see one fungus die, but then one takes it’s place right next to it! That’s awesome! Thanks for the cool information and hard work!

You are welcome Eric.
@Invalid Characters It was subtle scent. It wasn’t overpowering.
@@erictsai9378 does it smell bad?
You can smell them from many meters away.
We had a couple growing on the way to the dining hall. And yeah it smells a lot. It kind of smells like walking by decomposing roadkill.
Imagine having no idea what these are, smelling something rotten while traveling through the woods, and then finding some rotten half-decayed flesh orb on the ground
As a child, these were in my neighborhood (as it developed and new houses were being built). We called them poopshrooms because of the smell. It wasn't desturbing. Just intruguing to see new things. But then, as a child I had no real idea what was weird or not. I spent all of my days outside diggin around and running through the woods... or climing on the 2x4s of 2-story unfinished houses. I'm sure the construction workers didn't like that we collected all the little flags they used to mark utilities!

We have a few of these in my backyard! They're very fascinating being that it's so distinctive from the typical brown, umbrella-shaped mushroom top. They certainly have a funky smell, very musty. Not horrible, but certainly not pleasant. They've been popping up more recently. Since the video mentioned wood, I'm guessing that it's because we had some trees cut down a while ago; I imagine they're feasting on the rotting roots. I'll have to keep an eye out for those "eggs"! Very interesting!
They are very fond of mulch.
If they start popping up more eggs, you can actually eat them! Apparently they're best pickled. But yeah, they love old stumps and woodchips. They're fairly easy to transplant too, for those of us who enjoy the eggs

Mushrooms actually did wonders in my life. I suffered severe anxiety and mental disorder 18 years ago as a teenage, got diagnosed with OCD. Spent my whole life fighting OCD. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.
Can you help me with the reliable source 🙏. I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Belgium. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them
YES very sure of Dr.benfungi. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
How do I reach out to him? Is he on insta
Yes he's Dr.benfungi.Shrooms to me is a natrual healer. I know a guy who has used mushrooms in the same way and they have really helped him. mah dudes have safe trips all.
wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

Hello 👋 how are you doing today?
Flies: You are already dead
Plant: UNO REVERSE CARD!
2:07 reminded me of comedy series Friends when Ross and Rachel daughter first word was Gleba.
Pumpkin: "My death was greatly exaggerated"
"I faked my death once. The difference is, my death attracted the pests in my life that wanted my money." An old rich man said.
I would find these growing naturally in swamplands when I was a kid and their bizarre structure kept me wondering what and why... I often saw them nearby carnivorous plants (which is what I was looking for) and never would have guessed there was a good reason for these fungi to be sharing space with flytraps and pitchers. Thanks PBS & all involved!
its most likely that the carnivorous plants grow near the fungus, not the other way around
while the fungus couldn't care less about having other plants near it (it also has no deterrent for them) predatory plants like pitchers and flytraps would love to have a fly attracting plant near them
@@nickf6674 3rd party advertising

Psychedelics are just an amazing discovery. It's quite fascinating how effective they are for depression and stress disorders. Saved my life
I was having this constant and unbearable anxiety because of university stress. Not until I came across thomas cliton, a very intelligent mycologist, He saved my life honestly.
The trips I've been having have really helped me a lot, I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have a lot more empathy as well
This whole thing is pretty new to me, can I reach out to Mr Thomas for guidance?
Super Cool! What happens to all the mushroom spores that the fly eats up? Is the only spreading happening through the Gleba sticking to the feet of the flies?
Makes me wonder how this fugus even knows that flies like rotting flesh in the first place. I think nature is a lot more intelligent than we give it credit for

My new insult: "Shut up gleba"
Fun Fact: All stinkhorn fungi species are nontoxic to humans, and the immature eggs are eaten in some parts of the world. You can identify them both by looking for the presence of mature fruiting bodies nearby, and by cutting the eggs open to see if they have a gray interior with a white or reddish spike shape that will form the eventual stipe. These mushrooms can reproduce prolifically in woodchip mulch, so you may find large clusters of stinkhorn eggs in your garden.
I have two species, elegant stinkhorn (Mutinus elegans) and squid stinkhorn (Pseudocolus fusiformes) growing in my homestead garden. They taste somewhat like radishes, and make for great thickening agents in recipes.
Did anyone else have an urge to yell WILSON! when that first lattice emerged?
You know... Spoiled fruit, rotten eggs and dead animals don't smell the same...
This is the most horrifying thing I've ever seen.
