Nice post. I was there in the early 70's and 90's and early 2000's. In the 70's I worked as a waiter at the Agia Roumeli hotel. The hotel owner also owned the transport boat that made the trip from Hora Safkia and wanted me to work for him the rest of my life... I also did work for other hotel owners to pick up extra money. Slept on the roof of the Agia Roumeli hotel with two dutch chicks that worked there also. Took showers on the beach. The 70's it was the best. Im 63 and still travel like i am 21. I never stay at big hotels. I will go into places like a bar or restaurant and ask anyone if they know someone who can rent me a room. Crete is awesome. Ive been to many other islands but southern Crete is the best. I have some Greek friends in the states and also over on Rhodes. The ones here never want to go back to live due to the economic situation and the ones living there realize how bad it is economically and how they cant make a good living but love the lifestyle compared to the rat race in the states. I like the idea of making all your $$ during the tourist season and living off of it the rest of the year. Its a gamble but heck its all an adventure. Stay well.
Hi, we did this walk today, it was fantastic, so beautiful. However, there are two bits that are very very exposed and scary, with huge cliff drops and very narrow path - one right at the beginning and one past glyka negra beach. I wouldn't do it again but I'm proud we did it. Great video!
Been comming to Loutro on and off for 35 years. It has`nt changed much ower the years. And the changes that has come, are for the better. Were there last time two weeks ago (July 2024). Best place to stay is Molos Apt. Best place to eat is “The Blue House”.
@@inbetweenzebra No not really. There are quite a lot of day-guest comming in on the boats in the morning, but they leave again at arround 5pm. In the evenings it`s very quite. And even during the day it`s No problem to find avaliable sun beds. Especially if you go to the Beach area between the town and the old fortress ruin. Dont know it that area was established when you were there !!?? It`s quite new, and I cant remember what year they opened it. If you go to Loutro again, do yourself a favour and rent a boat and go to the beaches before Agia Romelli. They are totaly secluded and you can have them for your self. And there is even a small taverna on the Beach at Agios Pavlos. Its very small and very local. Mainly visited by “hippies”. You have to hike or sail to reach it. And if you sail, you drop ancor and swim in 😊 Its a fantastic experience.
We were me from Finland,Anne from Canada, Anne from Norway,2 german men and Ralf was making food for us all.We slept in caves November 1980.I have written much in my diary from those days.We walked to Loutron from Hora Sfakion.Everything was different.
Thanks for posting this. I went to Loutro back in about 2001 or 2002 with my wife and I can say by your footage it hasn't changed one bit in that time. Amazing place cut off from roads and would go back in a heartbeat. Will always have a cherished place in my memories. Do they still rent out the kayaks at the Porto Loutro hotel? Unless its name has changed. We went round to Sweetwater beach rather than take the ferry for exercise. And way too hot in June to hike. 41c most days.
Yeah, having no cars around makes a huge difference. Couldn't tell you if Porto Loutro still rents kayaks as I was just there for the afternoon. Thanks for watching!! Really a special place.
Great video! Nice music too at the end. We're heading to Loutro this summer and didn't know what to expect, so this is helpful. You wouldn't happen to know the ferry schedule from Chora Sfakion to Loutro would you?
You can find it online but it might not be very reliable. We were able to buy ours directly at the ticket office after getting off the bus in Chora. It shouldn't be a problem. Hope this helps
They sail all the time. And you can also catch a taxi boat. They charge 40 euro per trip for the hole boat. So of you are 4 and above, it`s cheaper than the ferry (11 euro per person)
I'd also like to add that this hike was very scary in two sections. I found it very dangerous and won't do it again but it was stunning and I don’t regret doing it. Make sure you are ok with heights and that you trust your feet, be very careful.
@@darmakiel Thankss, yeah i know, i took the hike to Marmara beach a few days ago, and yeah it was pretty scary aahha, i cants say i ll do it again, but it was very worth it
Looks like a lovely place and a lovely way to spend the day.

Thanks for your comment and info. I'm very happy to hear that's still an absolute paradise. I'd love to go back! It wasn't too crowded in July?
