Get good at sound design and all vsts sound good. Serum, phase plant, vital etc. can sound too clean and/or harsh because they do pretty much exactly what you tell it to do, so you don't get all the imperfections that make analog gear sound good. A Moog or prophet or juno can sound very good without much work but they also have a lot of limitations.
