    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) gives an emotional closing argument to the jury about the importance of truth within the government.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    The November 22, 1963, assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy shocked the nation and the world. The brisk investigation of that murder conducted under the guidance of Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren distressed many observers, even though subsequent careful investigations have been unable to find much fault with the conclusions his commission drew, the central one of which was that the assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, acted alone. Instead of satisfying the public, one result of the Warren Commission Report was that an unimaginable number of plausible conspiracy theories were bruited about, and these have supported a sizeable publishing mini-industry ever since. In making this movie, director Oliver Stone had his pick of supposed or real investigative flaws to draw from and has constructed what some reviewers felt was one of the most compelling (and controversial) political detective thrillers ever to emerge from American cinema. Long before filming was completed, Stone was fending off heated accusations of artistic and historical irresponsibility, and these only intensified after the film was released. In the story, New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) is convinced that there are some big flaws in the investigation of Oswald (Gary Oldman), and he sets out to recreate the events leading up to the assassination. Along the way, he stumbles across evidence that a great many people had reason to want to see the president killed, and he is convinced that some of them worked in concert to frame Oswald as the killer. Among the suspects are Lyndon Baines Johnson (the next president), the CIA, J. Edgar Hoover, and the Mafia. Over the course of gathering what he believes to be evidence of a conspiracy, Garrison unveils some of the grittier aspects of New Orleans society, focusing on the shady activities of local businessman Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones). Garrison's investigations culminate in his conducting a show trial that he knows he will lose and which he is sure will ruin his career in order to get his evidence into the public record where it can't be buried again. This movie won two of the many Academy Awards for which it was nominated: one for Best Photography (Robert Richardson) and the other for Editing (Joe Hutshing).

      A big mistake on their part. If he wasn't nominated in the previous year for "Dances With Wolves" (Which he didn't exactly deserve over Ray Liotta), then he probably would have gotten in.

      I think Liotta got completely overshadowed by both Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci in 'Goodfellas'. Pesci won Supporting Actor of course, but I would have nominated DeNiro for Best Actor, not Liotta. They nominated DeNiro for 'Awakenings' instead. The Academy loves the sentimental, heart-tugging stuff.

    • @jasonfromedmond
      @jasonfromedmond 9 лет назад +5

      Oh yes he was - acting, that is. The notion that this movie was or is anything other than fiction is absurd. Lee Harvey Oswald, a communist, assassinated President Kennedy, acting alone. Every scrap and speck of credible evidence proves this. Among those who have actually studied the case in detail, only fanatics, loons, or those financially interested - i.e., the billion-dollar "JFK conspiracy theory industry" - can truly believe otherwise.

      Yes, like Oliver Stone says on the commentary of the Blu Ray. It was not in the Script. And Stone says JFK is his Godfather. I am not american, but the believes of people who want justice and peace are universal. I'm very touched when I see this scene. Or the Arlington Scene. Here this black father with his son "here lies JFK, my boy" and the music of John Williams hits you right in the face. I am german, but I love (or like very much) America for some things and I think the truth and the future were murdered, they got away with it and the men who did it are still there, the successors. Those Right Wing structures are deeply included, the Military Industrial Complex, the CIA, LB. Johnson, the Mob (like Costner very logical says in JFK the Mob NEVER could have acted ALONE with all the cover up. Sad, that still people believe that though. Castro, the Russians? No, no, no!!! I think they may habe been a power involved who almost nobody talks about and which power in the world has risen up since 1963...
      Like X said "No One said he has to die, nothing is written." Or Ferrie: "Its a mystery hidden in a mystery."

      They’ve interviewed members of that jury who said they personally believed Clay Shaw was involved in a conspiracy based on the evidence they heard but due to the hearsay nature of the evidence they couldn’t convict. Also the movie is a meaningful allegory for citizen power vs state power regardless.

      Yeah, the problem is, the movie is dead wrong..
      Lemme explain.. If I told you the killer of Officer Tippit discarded a jacket shortly after shooting Tippit, and Lee Oswald discarded his jacket at basically the same time, what could that possibly, or likely (lol) mean?..
      They were the same guy, of course.. And the massive amounts of evidence in this crime supports that..
      So, why is Lee killing a cop?.. Discarding his jacket?.. Trying to kill more cops when he resists arrest?..
      He was a cop killer, no doubt..

    What a powerful speech - Kevin Costner's portrayal of Jim Garrison was superb. This movie clearly inferred what the government is capable of .... and yet so many Americans still choose to be okay with keeping their heads in the sand and not asking questions. The JFK assassination was a definite turning point for this country - and we have been going headlong in a downward spiral ever since then. • @charleslennonbaker
    @charleslennonbaker Месяц назад +2

    To say the movie is powerful, informative, and impactful is an understatement. The monologue in this scene is equally telling. When I saw this just before I entered the US Army, I was already a researcher of the assassination due to my parent's influence. My father was a career (23 years) US Army soldier who fought in Korea and 'Nam, and my mother is a TV journalist and producer. Both were privy to things most folks would never know due to their professions. More so for my father, who later worked for IBM (government contracts.)
    Having been a poor student but a scholar when it came to history, the 1960s was and has been my favorite decade to study. That said, it's also one of the most suppressed. When this movie came out, my whole family went to see it. My mother couldn't stay during the shooting reenactments of JFK, and my father kept his composure throughout but was very, very silent afterward for some time.
    About a year later, the anniversary of the assassination was being talked about on TV. I asked my dad what he thought about the movie based on what he already knew. He told me the movie was good, better than good, but the "Dealey Plaza" scenario played out in the last act gave him pause. I needed to familiarize myself with the term and asked what he meant. He told me the shooting scenario postulated in the movie was something he had done countless times in Korea. He taught that same tactic to troops in Advanced Individual Training in the states and elsewhere (South America), including replacements for 'Nam. He said it was an "L" formation. I had some idea of what he was talking about because I had been to civilian military school [Kemper Camper], but I still could not appreciate what he was saying.
    Another year went by, and I had been assigned to an Infantry Unit. Even though I was a Combat Medic, every 'non-combat' soldier was expected to participate in Infantry combat training, whether as a medic or a grunt it didn't matter and honestly I LOVE IT! On one op, it suddenly dawned on me. I knew what my father was trying to convey to me. He knew that the shooters were military veterans! My father never talked about actual combat, never talked about the friends he lost, nor spoke ill of the enemies he fought against. He never raised us to hate anyone, even the people who tried to kill him (my hero.)
    When I went home for a four-day pass, I had to get something off my chest. So I asked my dad the question. "When we were talking about the JFK movie, did you feel bad because you think vets participated in the assassination?" He responded with a sigh and said, "I feel bad because I might have trained or served with the guys who murdered the president." He had that same expression that Costner had at the end, and it cut me to the bone.
    We never talked about the movie or JFK again.

    One thing I think people may miss in this scene is how when Kevin Costner looks into the camera at the end and says “It’s up to you.” Before he delivers that line the camera rises up. "The truth is the most important value we have...because if the government murders truth, if we cannot respect the hearts of this people, then this is not the country I was born in, and it's certainly not the country I want to die in."
    If ever this echoed, it echoes today.

    My father served 2 tours in Vietnam with the Army's 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Because he believed in a democracy country.

      You mean “a democratic country.” Hate to break it to you, but killing Vietnamese didn’t help one iota.🤷‍♂️

      Jim Garrison was an unethical pile of shit. Don't listen to this film whatsoever. It is incredibly misleading, on so many things. it is actually pretty irresponsible.

    "Show this world that this is still a government of the people, for the people and by the people. Nothing as long as you live will ever be more important. It's up to you." Prophetic words considering what is trying to get himself re-elected in '24 and how dangerous he is. The idealism JUMPS off the screen in this scene.
