    I very clearly remember my Mom taking me and my siblings to see this movie in the theater. I recently had to place her in a care facility as she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia, so this was a wonderful bit of sentimental nostalgia to relive. Thank you for all the content you upload, it's not only entertaining but very genuine and uplifting :)

    It can't go without mentioning that in the late 80s, the girl's obsession with Thor was so quirky and out of left field. Marvel's list of really recognizable characters was relatively short, Spiderman, The Hulk, and Captain America, even X-Men were still on the nerdy side of recognition. Thor at the time was kind of obscure to the general, non-comic reading movie-goer, so it was fun for comics nerds to see Marvel's version of Thor(specifically) get so much love from a mainstream movie.

      When I first saw this a as a kid I never heard of Thor (comic book or Norse god version) and thought it was one the movie made-up to be like a Superman.

    • @Patrick-xv6qv
      @Patrick-xv6qv 10 месяцев назад +16

      No it was not. Marvel created the Thor superhero in the 1960s and in the late 1970s and 1980s he was at his most popular at the time.
      By the time this movie came out Thor had already appeared in many cartoons and even an episode of the old 70s and 80s TV show, the incredible Hulk

    • @Wungolioth
      @Wungolioth 10 месяцев назад +49

      @@Patrick-xv6qv I'm not talking about among comics fans, I'm talking about the cultural zeitgeist of everyday movie-goers, he was an obscure Marvel character to them.
      The Thor cartoon you mentioned was from the 60s, of that particular character they only made a handful of episodes, and the Incredible Hulk show he was in was a TV movie made after the series was cancelled, so that was pretty obscure in itself, it wasn't highly watched. There were three TV movies made, Return of the Incredible Hulk(w/Thor), Trial of the Incredible Hulk(w/Daredevil), and Death of the Incredible Hulk, with a character that bore a resemblance to Black Widow, but I don't think was ever revealed to be her. A fourth movie was planned but was cancelled because of low ratings.
      Edited because I had to fix a few errors from my memory.

      @TheNightBadger 10 месяцев назад +23

      @@Wungolioth You're right - it was a left-field reference. I was a comic nerd at the time, and characters like Thor were not in the public conciousness. If you said 'The Avengers' to people at the time 99% of them would have thought you were referring to the 60's TV show. There were only a handful of characters that were well-known outside of comic fandoms - Spiderman, Hulk, Superman, Batman, etc, but the others - which to comic fans are just as important - just weren't as well-known at the time.
      Also, regarding the various cartoons of comic characters, if you didn't see them when they aired, it was likely you never would. There was no streaming and internet with which to access these things or even find out they existed. I saw about three episodes of the Hulk TV series, rented some of the 60's cartoons (the couple I found on video), rented the Dr Strange, Captain America and Spiderman TV movies (Spiderman was released as two movies in the UK), saw maybe one episode of Spiderman and His Amazing Friends, and a couple of episodes of the 60's Batman / 70's Wonder Woman - never saw Super Friends. When this stuff wasn't airing it was basically gone - so none of it stuck to mainstream conciousness. The exceptions were the big Superman movies (and Supergirl) then the late 80's Batman. Prior to that if you were comic book fan you didn't have much content. I rented the pilot for 'Greatest American Hero' over and over back in the day not even knowing it was a TV show! I was also suckered into renting 'Hero at Large' (the John Ritter movie) just because it had a super hero costume on the cover (it's a good little movie, but it isn't really a super hero movie).

    Keith Coogan (Brad) is the grandson
    of Jackie Coogan, who starred in
    the silent film "The Kid" w/ Charlie Chaplin
    & played Uncle Fester in TV's "Addams Family".
    Jackie was severely taken
    advantage of by his parents
    & many people in the movie business.
    He was a huge success as
    a child star, but was left without
    any of the money his fame
    had earned. Eventually, serious
    legislation was put in place
    so that this sort of thing
    couldn't be repeated with

    My craziest babysitting story happened about the time this movie came out, lol. Lost a kid. He was mad at me because I wouldn't let him go out to play until his room was cleaned (his mom told me he had to get it done). Went to the bathroom, came out and he was no where to be found. Called everyone I knew and they came running to help find him. They went to the park a few blocks away, checked with all the neighbors, etc. His parents came home and I had to tell them he was missing. I was so scared. His dad went up to his room and walked straight to the toy box. Inside, asleep, was the kid. He'd hidden from me because he was mad and fell asleep. And apparently has done this before. Would have been good to know!! Another time his sister spilled an entire pitcher of juice on the kitchen floor. While i was in the kitchen mopping it up I heard a crash...run into the other room to find the oldest boy with his foot right in middle of the formerly glass-topped table. All within 15 minutes of their parents coming home, too, of course.

      @Kelley693 so we had these theaters that were bug in the 80s & big time in the 90s that would pick certain movies that would show there after they were done at the regular more expensive theaters & too make lil more money before they went to VHS stores like blockbuster they would air them at the dollar theaters. You could literally see a matinee movie for $1 then evening shows bout 3 -5$ depending on theater. They were awesome. Our local one was right down the street from our big main theater. It was huge deal in our area. Obviously big date scene too, but if u had a family at time I imagine that saved alot of ppl for those movies back in the day too

He starred in Hiding Out with John Cryer, he starred in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead with Christina Applegate, he starred in Toy Soldiers with Sean Astin, and The Book of Love with Chris Young. He even starred with Paulie Shore in In the Army Now.

    I did watch this as a kid when it came out on VHS. That first scene made me fall in love with the song And Then He Kissed Me. I have it on my Spotify playlist. And now that I'm an actor, I've become personal friends with Keith Coogan, who played the brother. Him and his wife are so awesome. They're traveling all around, living their dreams. Elizabeth Shue was also in some of the Back To The Future movies, and Karate Kid. Really underrated actress. I think she founded Famous Footwear along with Adam Sandler. Or maybe that's just a really bad dad joke.

Proof that in the late '80's, movies constantly told us young teens (at that time) that we could do ANYTHING and walk away perfectly fine. 🤭 But, I thank someone, that IU made it through those times, AND gave us good movies to watch. This was and still is a great movie. And I thank you for sharing it with us. Oh, and YES. At the time, Elizabeth Shue was the reason I, and I bet many other young boys watched this movie. THAT was an added PLUS. LMAO! Great Post.

    The actor who played Brad, Keith Coogan, is the grandson of Jackie Coogan who was a big child actor in the 20s, famously starring in the movie the Kid with Charlie Chaplin and later in the 60s as Uncle Fester in the Addams Family TV show. He is also known to this day for the Coogan Law which is a law in LA that prevents parents from stealing all their kids money. His parents stole all his money as a kid, so now his law prevents that. It also dictates how many hours children can work on sets and that they must attend school while filming. Keith was also in a movie called Toy Soldiers with Wil Wheaton and Sean Astin which is a cult classic.

    I have to admit, I find Cassie's reaction to the use of guns and gangs etc. in movies like this a bit strange. I think most people who grew up in the 80s watching these types of movies (lots of action but basically harmless PG rated stuff) knew that the characters were pretty much safe, that no one was in any real danger, it was all just to create tension. You just laugh at it and say, "Oh brother, what's next?" EDIT Great reaction, Cassie.
