- Can bonsai be made from cheap material? These might not be the best examples, but i think they will develop into nice trees. I think bonsai can be intimidating to beginners because of the cost of material and the threat of dying trees. With cheap materials, you can build your skills and practice different techniques without the fear of ruining expensive trees.
These dwarf youpon hollies were purchased from homedepot for 5.98 (plus tax)

I really enjoyed seeing you work on these trees!!!
I for one loved you tossing your stuff on the table, I laughed out loud, Im used to seeing the yamestey type people doing these videos, so for me it was refreshing, thanks
Thank you I’m new to bonsai but not plants and watched a lot on utube you are one of the best, explaining landmarks on trunk getting in there checking out the base, how to approach the canopy. Yes it is intimidating, an scary to some of my house plants as I look at them wonder with scissors in hand. Lol
Nice work on those two trees. Looking forward to seeing if that conifer survives, given all the dead material.
Very nice. Nice explanation and future planning. Thank you.
Nice looking trees!
I liked for the cat.. now im watching the rest of the video.
I did a yaupon holly about a month ago and it was kind of naked but it buded and grew nicely
great video encouraging people to go out and get creative and keep bonsai accessible to everyone. is there an update video on these three trees?
Well done! Sometimes its easier to get a main branch to lean by drilling a hols in the side of the pot then running your wire through and around the branch then twisting it closed at the pot end. That way over time the wire can be tightened thus making it shorter in order to gradually pull the branch into the desired spot over time. Like braces make A tooth move.
A lot of coments about how u pruned a bonsai it is the individuals vision for each seperaate bonzai u are creating ur own art piece so dont judge just grow bonsai the way ur eye tells you to grow 1
Banyak pohon yang indah 👌
"I think the main point right now is just getting this tree to live" lol! 😃
Ive given up wiring yaupon holly branches that are more than a few months old.
Lol. That table set up.
Nigel always says to worry about the roots before the top, I agree. You should have just done an initial clean up and focus on roots
I actually did do a little bit of root work to the smaller one but decided to leave the larger one alone for now. I figured i would focus more on "instant gratification" than longer term. My next update will probably be repotting them. Unfortunately, heat has gotten the best of some of my trees and I've lost a few this summer. But updates will come!
nigel does say that, but he also trains branches on tiny cuttings.... either way, theres no reason people need to wait to have a tree and do things by A book, if they really just want a decent tree sooner rather than later. I think its important practice, important for artistic stamina and its a necessary part of the learning process for beginners, and its just a fun way to experiment for someone at any level.. I just hacked back and separated some Mexican heather and found a few really good little tree frames. roots will happen in time, for now they are just little trees.
Kinda denpends on the tree I have found if u want alot of new shoots some minor root harassment can incourage serious budding one year I repotted and didn't worry to much about the top it was already looking amazing from the year before but I trimmed the roots a bit and the top went wild the next year....made for some very nice branches that I didn't expect to have.
When is best time to root prune the ilex, to transistion it to pre bonsai, found one with awesome trunk at lowes! Didn't buy it since its August in the South, may have to go back and get it now, thanks for the video!
just buy and wait or prune it
Me gustaria la traduccion de todo
Did the juniper survive??
Can they live indoors?
these don't do well for wiring unless it has green limbs or they are very small. move slowly over time. give us an update video!
Yeah, I noticed that first time I tried wiring it. It just snapped in half. It seems like a pretty good species for clip and grow though. The summers here are hot and I've had a few casualties but things are starting to come back. I'll probably have a video on something by the end of the week!
When u broke the branch I felt ur pain....I use to have a sycamore bonsai and u can't bend the branches unless they are fresh growth. And I never wire a sycamore I use string and weighs to pull the green shouts. Surprisingly u can miniaturize sycamore leaves to about 10mm
too much pruning for the initial clean up.
How so?
Sorry not able to see where you cut and other aspects of the process due to your bulky gloves find something tighter and comfy
Why!! Don’t have to cut that short!!! 😌
Does anyone have a video who knows what they are doing?
Since you seem to know what you’re talking about why don’t you film a video? I would love to hear your wisdom
@@Jack-oc2xq must have had too much coffee that day. I think I was searching out someone who was knowledgeable about the health of the holly. I'm trying to trim trees in my yard before digging them up the next year. I'm killing them. I have 5 footers that I can trim and I'm afraid to touch them. I've even bought these bushes in pots and killed them. What is the problem? If you can answer I'll be astonished. Because no one has an answer.
PS I'll bet you any amount of money that his little project died.
HERONS BONSAI… ❤️🌱
lol and it sure looks like a 6$ "bonsai"
Ja, ja,,ja,ja, that's a bonsai, you most be doped!!!!ja ja ja
I don't think we can call this bonsai
Leave comedy to the professionals
6:18 maybe not to you the one butchering the tiny tree so it look how you envision it but I bet that tree thinks otherwise bub
I don't think so. Evolutionarily, trees are adapted to change and shape to their environment. If trees couldn't handle intense change and damage, they wouldn't have survived. Trees wouldn't live anywhere in places they would be damaged if they couldn't handle it. It's what they do. Trees shade put their own branches, those branches die, and new ones grow. Sure, this looks pretty rough now, but its nothing compared to the hardships that natural trees go through to survive. Besides this initial "butchering" I would say bonsai trees are definitely in an easier position than struggling for survival on a cliff face. And this tree in particular is better off here than a hedge where it would be cut back every year by someone with a rusty pair of cheap, dull scissors. Is this really any worse than someone cutting their grass? Or trimming the bushes around their house?
THEY ARE DEAD…..
This guy just wasted my time
