- A traditional song from the Guria region of the (Republic of) Georgia. An old healing ritual song against smallpox, sung in a child's room suffering from this illness. The chanting is supposed to achieve the appeasement of the spirits "Batonebi," - meaning: "gentlemen" (that is what the disease is called, presumably because it was precisely identified with these spirits).
In 2001, UNESCO recognized Georgian polyphonic singing as a masterpiece of oral and intangible cultural heritage, and in 2008 it was included in the list of masterpieces of the oral and intangible cultural heritage of humanity, thereby confirming the universal significance of traditional Georgian polyphony. This a capella song in three voices is an example.
Translation of the lyrics:
Gentlemen, have mercy,
have mercy, gentlemen,
beautiful gentlemen,
violets and roses are on your paths.
White sheep and a herd of goats,
the lamb is jumping around.
This pleased the "gentlemen,"
and they turned away and left us.
Gentlemen, have mercy,
have mercy, gentlemen.
