I would agree on peak China. however that is missing a couple of important context. his claim that US China GDP gap has widen is missing the point, US is printing money, of course US GDP number will go up, but that is a bubble, it not real economic growth, US productivity has not increase. while China stagantation is indeed cause by policies, these are policies design to tighten and pop bubbles, the fact that China did not go into a recession for popping the bubble is amazing. they are settling themselves up for a US economic collapse, when it happened, China would already lost it risky asset and be position to replace US. so the problem isn't if China has peak, the problem is US peak a long time ago, and it is merely moving on momentum and as each administration refuse to deal with the debt. US will for the first time in it history spend more on interest payment to debt than it spend on the military. think about that.
i like to think that countries are in a race with no finish line. and the route is full of up and down. sometimes it is better to intentionally slow down before you climb a steep mountain to conserve your energy. it is illogical to just pick a point of time to measure if they are winning or losing without an understanding of their intention and goal. the US goal is simply to outlast the term in office, as long as the bubble don't pop while they are president, it all good. but China is restructuring for what happens after the bubble pop.
the other thing, is US is able to sustain it momentum right now by exploiting Europe hot money that is leaving Europe due to the Ukraine war. it is almost as if they engineered the war to chase money out of EU and into US. that US is growing at the expense of other G7 nation, effectively canabalising the European. so just because US is doing "well" no longer mean the West is doing well. eventually the European are going to have to turn against US to save themselves.

China is not printing money? As President Joe like to say: C'mon man!
In addition, much of China's GDP growth is artificial consisting of unproductive infrastructure projects. Just look at their High Speed Rail (HSR). The system has almost $1T in debt. The first lines between major cities were profitable so Xi decided he wanted HSR everywhere. Look at the reports of stations built, at high cost, that are not in use. Many are in areas that are not close to customers and inconvenient. HSR is just one glaring example. There are others.

Hong Kong has reported plausible foreign intereference (from the USA) in 2019 Hong Riots and the HK court has already sentence some to jail for receiving foreign funding for activities leading up and involving the HK riots.

It is laughable that Isabel Hilton thinks that the leadership transition from Hu Jintao to Xi Jinping is not peaceful just because a Chongqing City Party Secretary was sentenced to jail for corruption.
Bo Xilai was relieved of his position as Chongqing City Party Secretary one day after Xi's ascension to General Party Secretary of the Communist Party of China (aka President of the People's Republic of China). The race to top position was over even before Bo was relieved of duty.. the detention, official charges, trials and sentencing took place way after Xi's came to power as the number 1 in China.
There was no violence in the transition. There could well be jostling for the seat taking place in the background with deals and influencing going on but far from the violent transition that Isabel Hilton imagined (or dreamt of).

This situation is true in all other Asian Tigers economy in the past. Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan all went through it.. similar to some years in Thailand and the exact opposite is true in Indonesia right now.
Indonesia is booming and if you go to Indonesia now, the youths are very positive abou their future and business people there are making good money.
This has to do with the economic cycle of government's fiscal stimulus and the cyclic boom of the property market.
China is going through the middle income trap period and has left the mad growth adolescent phase that it went through from the 90s to 2010s.
Ask a Japanese in their 60s and they will reminiscent the 80s. As a Singaporean and he/she will say how things are cheaper (cars and housing) back in the 80s and 90s. As a South Korean it will be 2000 or Taiwanese and it will be 90s to 2000.
Policies have some impact but the main reason is the structure of the economy at various phases of development and China's mad boom phase is gone and the government is implementing structural reform with the aim from breaking out of the middle income trap in the next 10 year or so.

I certainly don't intend to spend 58 minutes finding out how they managed to avoid talking about the main reason why China may be in decline! Something about coal or pouring concrete, I think.
By 2100, the USA is expected to have a population of roughly 400 million. If it's current fertility rate remains constant, China will have a population of maybe 500 million by then. It will have roughly the same or fewer working age people than the USA and it will have a much larger number of elderly people to look after. Maybe the demographics will change. That's the main unknown. It might get worse and become more like Taiwan or South Korea. I expect China to enjoy a decade or two as world's biggest economy and then to fade out in importance as its population declines.

Due to the vast population of China, more than four times the US's population, the difference between these two countries is very high in terms of per capita income. The per capita income of the United States is 6.5 and 3.41 times higher than that of China in nominal and PPP terms, respectively. The US is the 6th richest country in the world, whereas China comes in at 72nd rank. On a PPP basis, the United States is in 9th position, and China is at 78th.

@@buildmotosykletist1987 Victor Gao did not threatend to nuke Australia. Please watch his interview on this matter again. The point that he is trying to get across is that if a country has nuclear weapons, then that particular country becomes a legitimate target for nuclear response in retaliation.
He emphasized that China has a no first use nuclear policy and also China's long standing policy on not using nuclear weapons on countries with no nuclear weapons.
He said that Australia is getting into a gray area when and if Australia obtains submarines that are powered by weapons grade (high enriched) uranium (the submarines that Australia is getting through Aukus).
Victor Gao also doubts that these AUKUS nuclear powered submarine would be under the complete control of Australia and that Australia might have to relinquish its sovereignty of its nuclear submarine based on the AUKUS deal. The ultimate control of these nuclear submarine is also under debate by politicians in Australia.

Tom Miller wants the Chinese kids to embrace the Imperial Japanese Army when they learned of the massacre that took place in Nanjing during the Second World War?
What else should a Chinese kid feel when he/she learns about the atrocities that the Japanese did during the World War to their ancestors of their compatriots?
Having hatred for a group of barbaric soldiers who committed atrocities in the past does not preclude showing compassion and friendship for contemporary Japanese.

42% of the Belt and Road Iniative is for cheap energy extraction with the biggest clients being Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Nigeria. These cheap energy investments take a very long time to complete and take a long time to turn a profit. The other countries, like Pakistan, and many African countries, are on the verge of collapse. China's total debt exposure in the Belt and Road Iniative is 600 Billion dollars with an average partner rated at B3 / B-. the lowest possible rating. Chinese lenders account for 12% of Africa’s private and public external debt, which increased more than fivefold to $696 billion from 2000 to 2020. China is a major creditor of many African nations, but its lending has fallen in recent years and is set to remain at lower levels. Further, all contracts in the Belt and Road Initiative are secretive after 2015, thus undermining the financial world order. All of China's loans in the Belt and Road Initiative have "cross-default clauses": if one loan is defaulted on, all loans can be requested for immediate payment in full. And non-Chinese lenders do not know what China will do in each case, as each contract is secretive.

Isabel Hilton got it so wrong on the China Japan Friendly initiatives in China.
China wants its people to have good relationship and friendship with the Japanese people as evident by the banner displayed in Fudan University and the various Sino-Japan Friendly associations that sprinkles throughout the country.
China taught its student what happened factually in War World 2 and the atrocities committed back then by Imperial Japan. There is no need to teach hatred.. the reaction and feelings of Chinese when they learned of the actual events that took place in Nanjing came from their heart. China does not need to teach the kids what to feel. They just showed the reality of the 1940s.
Isabel and Tom's ideas are akin to criticizing contemporary Jews for not loving Hitler and the Nazi regime of 1930s/40s.
Imagine Tom narrating an experience where he saw a young Jewish kid with clenching fists and an angry face when the kid first learned of the Holocaust and Tom's comment is :"Why does Israel teach young Jewish kids to hate the Germans?".

5:20 it's misleading to tell only part of the stroy.
China's GDP peaked around 2021 because of US repression, including the high interest rate of US $ which dragged money back to the US. it lead to the increasing of exchange rate of RMB. Also the Economic sanctions to China products, export control on high tech, also contributes. As the result, the GDP of China, from calculation point of view, shrinks.
While the other side of the fact, China's economy didn't collapse, it just squeezed out the bubbles, and indurstry exports are increasing in 2024, which keeps dominating the global market.
Can the Fed keep interest rates at 5% forever? it's like holding the breath for more than 2 years. and the US Gov is paying huge amount of interest for the debt because of the high interest. I doubt it can last too long. wait until the Fed drop the interest rate...

Watched the whole thing. I find their views quite interesting and one can tell they were genuinely trying to be as objective as possible.
I did find one interesting commonality amongst all on the panel including the moderator which is providing their comments based on a very Western measuring stick. I find this quite surprising clearly all members of the panel have extensive Chinese exposure and on the street experience. It would be more interesting if another member provides the answers from a CPC perspective.
As an example, China cares more about social needs than individual needs. It is country, family, and self in that order. Of course this does not sit well with many from the West, but that’s the underlying principle. The allow to get rich has always been a pilot light strategy to kickstart the economy. Now that industrialization has reached momentum, it will be a challenge to reform policies to obtain a more equal wealth distribution, the common prosperity bit.
I find the talk about soft power and a lack of culture influence an excellent example of Western hubris in action. It is China’s culture not to impose or influence other cultures. Kind of like the Star Trek prime directive. They just want to be proud of their own history and culture. Perhaps this too inward looking, but who’s to stay what’s best?

Is Austin Williams trying to say that the definition of a world class metropolitan city is the lack of a good metro transportation system.
So according to Williams, Tokyo is badly planned, Singapore is also badly planned and throw Seoul into the mix too.
Where did Spectator find these underwhelming "experts" to discuss China?
Shanghai is an ancient city by most international standards and some level legacy issues on property rights (hard to re-deisgn an ancient city) are to be accepted. Shanghai isn't a city built from scratch and the authorities there have to take into account existing residents and their property rights. You cannot tear down an old metropolitan city of over 20million and redesign to not have metro systems.. a utopia where everyone takes a 5 min walk to get to school, work and play.
Williams' comment is indicative of his bias and double standard. Cindy Yu laughing along to his ridiculous comments is worse.

It all depends on the circumstances and choices that the ccp makes. China made the right decision early on to focus very much on investment to gdp. But they have been pushing on that string now for 5 years plus. Consumer spending in china is 38% to GDP. That is literally 3 stdev too small. Have china aggressively switch to consumer spending to gdp and they are destined to be the largest economy in the world. But if they continue to push on the investment to gdp string as it seems they are currently insisting on continuing in the future, then the chinese economy will stagnate. And the longer you stagnate the harder it will be to make that transition. And yes, it is a very hard transition to execute. And yes, this transition will require the ccp to loosen the reigns a lot as to who holds power, which they likely will not be willing to do. So very likely we are currently seeing peak china. This is a very sad story indeed, especially for the common chinese person.

I feel sad for Yu that she have to make a living this way. Why don't Yu become a real journalist and reports on facts in China instead of her endless condescending anecdotes. I will give you a clue, she isn't going to get paid much reporting on the factual. The West doesn't want to hear the truth, they want the Yellow Peril to scare their population into submission.

RCEP was an ASEAN initiative and it pretty much help bind China into Asian trade while intentionally excluding the US. so we are INTENTIONALLY helping China gain regional economic dominance. most of Southeast Asia has muslim community. US blind support to the genocide of Gaza has drawn sharp criticism from ASEAN politician, even Singapore a tradditional Israeli and US partner had to openly critise Israel. all this is shifting ASEAN toward China and away from US... and we haven't talk about the reality that most of Southeast Asia leadership has Chinese heritage. the new thai prime minister has chinese relative who she return to visit regularly. the thai monarchy too has close ties to China with the princess also making frequent visit.
