Offroading in Ancient Saudi Arabia, AlUla // Overland Series EP.29

- We explore the region of Al Ula, Saudi Arabia with our Land Rover Defender and not only learn about ancient Hegra but find an elephant and brain looking rocks next to our campspot in the desert.
After an amazing morning at the volcanoes (check the previous episode, EP28) we go north towards Al Ula. The road itself to get there is stunning. The road is very comfortable and the mountains and cliffs mesmerizing.
In Al Ula we camp wild without any problem and later visit the ancient city of Hegra (Madain Saleh) with the famous “Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza”. The Nabateans built this city after Petra as they thought it might be better protected than their sister city in Jordan. There are more than 111 tombs here, some of them in a better state than the ones in Petra.
We left the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra and headed into the desert again. We got stuck late at night and were too lazy to get us out of the sand so we had to do it in the morning. It took more effort than expected.
We continue doing some epic offroading in the desert and find Baby Elephant Rock and Al Naasla Rock. Some of the engravings here are thousand years old!

You are truely travelling in an amazing part of Saudi - and my favourite place to be, the desert. The scenery is just out of this world. Welcome to Saudi. First thing we do when we get stock on sand is lowering the tire pressure to 5-10 psi. Then when you get on a clean hard sand, we air the tire up to its normal pressure. The low psi will float the on sand.

Yeah at night we were to lazy to lower tires. That’s why we got stuck. But then I dropped the pressure to get out… 5-10 psi is too low for us. We way roughly 3t and we only have 265/75 tires, on a long journey we need to compromise and can not get super wide tires for sand driving. Pulling one or two tires of a rim, due to ultra low pressure would be a disaster for us. Especially with having no one around. There for sand boards are more work but the safer method. But thanks for the hint!

Glad you made it out. Driving at 20/18 psi would have been fine even at three tons. I was lazy last year and bogged my 3.4 ton Troopy in a similar way, just metres from solid ground. Never again - took me ages to get out. Thank goodness for Maxtrax and diff locks… You live and learn :)
We always prefer the extra work than going to low and risking getting our tire out of the rim. We think anyways is part of the adventure. Trying to don't get stuck, therefore choosing easier routes, is not our style of travel. It can be stressful sometimes, but we are pretty sure it's going to be a highlight in the end. 😉

All you have to do is make the tire pressure 16 PSI
I’m honestly not sure how low we can go, keep in mind that we weigh 3to, and we do not drive super wide tires. The last thing I want to do is pull one or more tires of the rim. Especially in this place 30 km away from the highway and more than 100 from the next city. I think in the end we dropped the tires to 32-35 psi

@@rebels181 you are right, but you also need to consider the weight of our car (3 tons). We go to 22 psi in an emergency. The last thing we want is to pull a tyre off the rim...
9:00 very unsafe way you adding sand beneath the vehicle, if that jack fail you would hurt your self badly and sadly no reception to call for help... When you get stuck in such situation, you need dig under the belly of your vehicle to gain some clearance, deflate tires to 5-7 psi just to get out than inflate again between 10 to 15 depending of vehicle weight.

Why don’t you just stack a couple of washers on the bottom bolts to push the bottom of the wheel out on your spare tire carrier? Should work nicely.

Thank you for your comment. I think you are blaming us and generalizing too greatly on your statement. You are jugging our experience by what we show in RUclips, which is just a platform where we share a glimpse of what we experience. There a lot of experiences and learning we do behind the scenes that are not shown in this platform and never will be.
