  • “You were not just another visitor. You were my life.” Performance artists and former couple Marina Abramovic and Ulay share their thoughts on the historic moment in MoMA when the two met after many years of separation.
Marina Abramovic had a retrospective exhibition, “The Artist is Present,” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York back in 2010, which later turned into a documentary with the same name. During a performance, her former partner in art and life, Ulay, turned up and the emotional meeting between the two became a viral sensation. The clip showing the couple reuniting has more than 20 million views on RUclips. And there is a simple explanation for the clip's reaction: “It’s so human. Everybody has love and separation.”
“It’s been great, it’s difficult, it’s been hell, it’s been love, it’s been hate, it’s been everything. But I never forgot that moment in MoMA when I broke my rules, and I never break my rules, ever, ever, ever,” Marina Abramovic explains, and Ulay elaborates: “There was no concept for it. There was no preparation. There was no rehearsal. There was no predicted end.”
Ulay (Frank Uwe Laysiepen, b.1943 - d.2020) is a German artist, who was based in Amsterdam, Holland, and Ljubljana, Slovenia. Ulay received international recognition for his work as a photographer, mainly in Polaroid, from the late 1960s, and later as a performance artist, including his collaborative performances with Marina Abramović from 1976 to 1988. His work has continuously dealt with politics, identity, and gender. In 2016 Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Germany, held the first major retrospective show of his work ‘Ulay Life-Sized.’ In 2020 the Stedelijk Museum held the largest-ever, and first international post-humous, retrospective exhibition of his work ‘Ulay Was Here.’
Marina Abramović (b. 1946) was born in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia, and is now based in New York. She began her work as a performance artist in the early 1970s and is now regarded as one of the most important artists in the field. Her work explores the relationship between the performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. Her retrospective ‘The Artist is Present’ at MoMA, New York, in 2010 gave her a wide international breakthrough. In 2017 the retrospective exhibition ‘The Cleaner’ was shown at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, among other places in Europe. Marina Abramović is set to have a major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, the first-ever UK exhibition spanning her life’s work.
Marina Abramović and Ulay were interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg in upstate New York at Marina Abramović’s home over ten days in August 2018 for the film ‘No Predicted End.’

'People are often unreasonable and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you; be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.'

That "thank you" when she tells him all these things is so cold... Especially when you know he cheated on her with his translator during the great wall of china walk. And he stopped walking the last 3 days and waited for her instead. Their relationship started to fall apart because she refused to conceive a child on the day of his mothers funeral. Then he cheated repeatedly and conceived a child with the translator DURING the break up walk which originally was supposed to be a marriage walk. And she manages to look at it fondly and he says...thanks😅

@@clarasteuerwald2397 from her own book and interviews he gave towards the end of his life also admitting that to do what they did you have to be extreamely selfish and that he left his wife and children when they were teens after giving them all the tools he considered they would need in life and explaining to them why he had to go. She goes into details about it, how for her motherhood was incompatible with the level of dedication needed to her craft, her work and personal relationship with him. So that last performance together on the great wall of china was even more significant because regardless of the state of their relationship they always went all in and this time he didn't. He didn't walk until he saw her he walked until he found a nice looking spot for the picture and well, as for the cheating, given that very soon after he gave birth to a child with said translator, easily proven.

Most men true love is hidden deep within themselves. Due to everybody having their own lives and marriages with kids and family. Some rather keep it to themselves to not cause drama and be home wrecker for the living because Mistakes were made back then where some couldn't turn back and had to live with it and make the best of life.

I see comments, peoples opinions. And I respect that,I may not agree but I respect peoples opinions. Because of that I hope you'd do the same for me. You don't need too but you can read if you like.
I never really knew about marina,i had seen the MoMA video on tiktok but I never really knew about her art. Now I have a better understanding of what she has done in the world and her art. I didn't feel connected to her,she has her life and I have my own,we share different stories. But I felt like we shared a common sadness,a sadness that the world feels, the sadness that makes you feel like no one understands. Her art wasn't stupid to me,it was a show of society. It shows that people will do terrible things, not just murders, rapists, kidnapper, and more. But actually 'normal' people. That if there were no consequences than the world would be filled with people who'd do whatever they want. I'm no saint,I never will be but sometimes it disgusts me that I live in a world were people like that and me are under the same category of a "human" The world is a hard place, and what do I know. I'm only 15 and I've been through a lot like everyone else had,and i will only go through worst as i get older. But I know that this world isn't what i thought It was like when I was growing up,sometimes I wish I would've stayed thinking the world was a great place. I don't know what I'm trying to say here but Marina showed people what the world really was by her art,not many people can do that. This wasn't just 'stupid poetry' nor was it 'just a women in her feels' the art shes created was the world. she portrayed the world in art. Whether she did it for money or fame or whatever reason doesn't matter because she was able to put out art that showed things that can't be explained in words. This is long and probably some bullshit that doesn't make sense but I have nothing else to do on a Sunday at 1:46 pm. thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.

I’m actually going through something right and I needed to hear this. I’ve been hurt and abused by someone in my life who was supposed to protect me,about 2 years ago I left the situation thankfully and I’m rebuilding myself and life. Even though it’s been almost 2 years since I’ve had a hard time moving on. I carry a lot of anger and want of revenge towards the person who hurt me. And hearing your advice really helped me. It’s funny because my mom and therapist tells me similar things all the time but I think you saying it made it actually hit me. Crazy how someone can tell you the same thing so many times but when someone else, someone I don’t know personally, says the exact same thing,I finally understand. Because I’m so young people don’t take what I say seriously, they think I’m too young to understand the world and pain. Your comment made me feel like my feelings were validated no matter my age. Like someone finally listened to me and didn’t make me feel wrong or dumb about what I say. This is long but I want to truly say thank you. @@saraislam8602 Hey Sara you don't need to thank me ;) I just spoke from the heart and really wish you the best life you can live. Please feel a big hug of love and encouragement from someone that got hurt (probably) the same way as you. And at the very same age! Wild right? Maybe we are not that stranger to each other 'cause something has made me write to you before sleeping yesterday. [SENSITIVE CONTENT ALERT!] From 14 to 16 I was abused by my best friend's father (that was supposed to protect me too). My father wasn't there for me, my mom didn't know what to do so I decided for myself and ghosted my dear friend so I'd never see nobody from that family or that house anymore. We used to pass the holidays together on the beach and it was hard to just "try to forget and be far from all of it". A strange shame and guilty followed me for years, even If I was a child. I'm telling you this because I feel like I'm "reaching that 15 years girl" by talking to you. I'm very glad you have a therapist and your mom by your side, that's very important!! Take your time to heal, take care of your mind and body (and voice! be sure you are always heard), find your passions, a sport or dance that makes you feel good. I was not aware of the importance of this tools and tried to move forward putting things under the carpet. And you know what? Many other shit happened all this years but I know it all started there. Don't get me wrong, this is not a sad story, I am ok and my life is amazing (like Abramovic I had the chance to work with Bob Wilson in more than one play) but it took me so long to get here. That's what I'd like you to get from this. Many insecurities and fears blocked me and got in the way of the best version of me. I don't want that to happen to you. Find people to help you feel safe and empowered, enjoy small things step by step and forgive you for everything because the pain you're feeling is not your fault. But you are responsible for you and what you do with your pain. I wish from the bottom of my heart that you find a way to be the best version of you not today but tomorrow. Don't hold on your life your laugh, what life wants from us is courage. Let's get inspired by Marina Abramovic and do intense beautiful pieces of art. I just got back from a vacation where I went to the same beach to forgive everything. I must say I feel better now. Sending you my best, Isa. Xoxo.

I tend to get nervous when talking to others because I was in many situations in the past where people thought I was weird or too loud at times. I just get excited sometimes but I’m also very quiet other times so my personality tends to confuse people. When I write comments I try to think that the other people in the comments are my friends, even if we don’t share the same opinions at times. I actually like to read other peoples ideas and beliefs even if I don’t agree with them because I like to try and understand the other side of things. She was tortured as a child by her sociopath/narcissist mother. She didn't heal herself from that which is why she attracted parasite/sociopath/narcissist Ulay. She THOUGHT she loved him, but in reality she didn't love herself. You cannot have True Love between 2 people unless you love yourself first. Her lesson in life was to learn to love herself first & foremost. ALL Empaths are attracted to sociopaths/narcissists because Empaths are HEALERS & sociopaths/narcissists are BROKEN. Soulless. They cannot be healed. If one doesn't understand the dynamics of the energy exchange between these types of people then it is the Empath that suffers the most, because they have empathy, remorse and a conscience. Ulay did not. He was an energy vampire. A parasite. A user. A coward. A mimic. He MIRRORED her characteristics. It's what narcissists/sociopaths do because they are EMPTY inside.

you see.. that's not even remotely important. even if it's staged, it's like a movie. if you open yourself to the deeper meaning of it, and you don't start arguing whether it's "real" or not, you get an immense feeling of meaning.

I would like see this work to be able to sustain itself with the arguments you mention, but apparently they were not enough and they focused on a marketing strategy. Art is much more than that.

And then her “Wait don’t go away”. Even thinking of the people I have had hurtful endings with, I can’t imagine being so eager to pull away and not savour that moment of connection. That made me so sad. Just me personally though.

It did feel really cold. I imagine from what I have seen in him is that he was never great with emotions. He had them, of course, but just wouldn’t let them linger. And Marina is so full of emotion it’s probably overwhelming. I don’t think she ever fell out of love with him. Even in the video footage for “lovers” she’s crying and he looks like he wants to comfort her but seems very emotionally distant.

    • @greg0050

Probably because she breaks her rules. Nobody in a relationship can say this seriously without being a saint, and this woman is a demon worshipping occultist. If she broke her own rules as an occultic witch, what fuckin rules did she break as a human for him to walk away? Marina is too well known to believe she's an innocent person in her married life. Giving this level of trust to someone clearly unhinged is suicidal, her touch feels disgusting to him most like.
