- 🎬 It's time for another Scream podcast, this time the infamously campy third instalment. In this episode we will discuss why Scream 3 deserves a lot more recognition than it receives, but also why it is still deeply flawed, and all of the changes that could have been done to make it better. This includes everything from the unremarkable opening scene featuring Cotton Weary, to the wasted potential of Sidney's deteriorating mental health from being isolated for so long. Mostly, we just have a really fun time revisiting the story and all of the characters, which felt like we could have gone on for another two hours. We still left room for The Cherry Picker nominations though, because of course, we have to choose which character we think was most deserving to die.

I like the idea of Angelina being a killer with Roman promising her fame and fortune and then Roman actually killing her, like betraying her so it would be just him in the end getting the spotlight and the fame. He's not the type to want to share fame with someone else but he used her to help him with his dirty work and then once he got everyone to the mansion he didn't need her anymore and killed her.
Or he killed her in front of others so they think she’s dead, like the 6th movie and the sister faking her death. It’s the only death we really see in the series that there are witnesses to.

It was touching when they clasped hands after she kills Roman. Their mother twisted both their lives up, though Roman took the wrong road, but they have that shared history.
One reason I have for thinking Angelina was one of the killers and escaped is that we see her body being dragged away. Ghostfaces don't generally bother moving bodies after killing them unless to create some sort of scare to others (Casey, Himbry, Kenny).

Tbf Zack as much as many people come to your channels for Scream content (which is great) I must admit I've enjoyed your videos on other horror movies too like when you figured out who destroyed the blood bank in The Thing and ranking horror villain masks! Scream 3 holds a special place in my heart because it was the first one I saw. My dad got it for my 12th bday party, he thought I'd seen the first 2...I hadn't lol. None of my friends had seen the first 2 either, but we watched this one and were just scared enough to make it good, and the comic relief from Jennifer is top tier. I just hate they killed Jennifer off. I fell in love with this movie and watched it over and over to the point where I know all the dialog! I saw the 1st and 2nd when I was 14 or 15 and I remember thinking, "wow no wonder the Casey Becker scene is talked about like it is, that was terrifying"

The idea of a Stab 2 Cameo by Parker would be great. Especially since I could see this going back to “Horror Sequels” or “Reboot Sequels”, so Stab 2 making an appearance now would probably make more sense than any time before.

Can’t explain how much I love this duo!! Love all things horror and could listen to you two going back and forth for days!! On the note of the plot being similar to the Weinstein events - I read an article (I think?!) that stated there was a supposed fall out between Wes and one of the Weinstein brothers - the article theorised that Wes put that storyline in there to shine a light on the Weinsteins/what they were doing! No idea if this is correct but it always made sense to me and stuck out in my mind! Can’t wait for you two to drop the review of season 3 of Buffy 🙌🏽🖤

On one hand, this is quite fun - on the other, it feels more R-rated Scooby-Doo goes to Hollywood than a Scream movie.

Scream 3 is honestly above the second and fifth one for me. It’s so fun and Parker Posey as Jennifer is the best thing I’ve ever seen. And tbh 4 is my favorite of the franchise. I like it better than the first one.

My ranking is 2,1,6,3,4,5 . I put number to first because the reveal at the end was awesome for me "Billys Mother" totally caught me off guard. I put number five last because of the lack of Chase scenes, killing Dewey.
Couldn’t wait for this episode, currently watching at work. I do agree with Eddie that they could’ve really went more in depth about roman. How did he find Billy? A scene where he meet Maureen and her closing him out. The reveal of who Casey unmasked before her killing. Idk they really could’ve made 3 or 4 a prequel of the events of what happened the year Maureen got killed. The opening could’ve been the night that she was taken advantage of in Hollywood

For a long time I liked Scream 3 the least.
Now when I know the story behind it's troubled production I am so impressed how good it is.
Sure, Scream 3 is still the most frustrating watch in the franchise.
Knowing it could be sooooo much better makes feel devastated at times :D
Sometimes I can just have fun with it, sometimes I am not able not to focus on all it's issues.
But at the end it is a Wes Craven movie, and for me - a big fan, it has plenty of Craven's goodness in it :)

I go back and forth on whether 3 or 4 is the worst in this franchise (worst being a relative term, as they're both better than 98% of slasher sequels).
3 was, and still, is the one that disappoints me the most. It never raises my heart rate or gets me on the edge of my seat. The quality of the writing is a sharp drop from the first two (and also goes to show that generating suspense is as much a part of the script as it is the direction). There are a handful of solid comedy moments - the scene with Carrie Fisher is great, and Parker Posey rules the movie. I also appreciate the blunt acknowledgement of the movie industry's exploitation of women. However, the climactic soap opera twist killer reveal deeply annoys me (even more than it did at the climax of 2), and I just can't care about what happens after that. With that said, it does seem like everyone involved tried their hardest to make this movie as good as it is.
However, Zack makes a lot of excellent points about why 4 is the worst one. I will get to that when you both do.

Scream 3 is so so messy filled with plot holes but I would still rank it above scream 4 just because it still has storytelling going foreward which links all 3 of the original trilogy together and gives us closure to the story and there is character development to work with still with the big 3. Scream 4 just doesn't have anything new to add to the story that links it to the original 3 movies and has no Character development or suspense. Having many of the death scenes end in an unfunny one liners too was just cringey. That Trevor character also was just a total miscast for me. Plus the killers just like in the 5th one are just that..just more killers. Nothing that adds to the story its just OK random person puts on ghostface costume and kills people again. You could just do that over and over it's very weak
After hearing Zack talk about if they have to have something from "Stab" show us Parker Posey as Jennifer Jolie... HELL FUCKING YES! Although it would be Parker Posey playing Jennifer Jolie playing Gale Weathers so it most likely won't have the same comedic value, I'd love to see some scenes from "Stab 2" since the only movies in the "Stab" franchise we've seen is "Stab", "Stab 6", "Stab 7" and "Stab 8". I'd love to see scenes from the other films.
As for Eddie's casing of Laurie Metcalf's daughter as "Stab Mrs Loomis", I'm all for it! Yes please!

I always liked Neil's presence in the first and third film. He's a character I'd love to see return. Scream 4's theatrical version never really specified what happened to him. They could easily bring him back in some way. Also, I want to see Hank Loomis again.
How about a film based on the surviving parents of the original cast, and call it SHHHH

I honestly never thought I would come around to Scream 3. I think that the sheer disappointment of the 4th installment assisted that.
Honestly, Scream 3 just looks so damn *beautiful*. The cinematography actually makes Los Angeles look so lush and inviting. Neve Campbell gives her absolute best performance in this and she just feels so real. This is the first and only time in the franchise that Sidney didn't feel invincible in the final act. I truly believed at one point that she had died. I really do love this film now but I was so upset as a kid when I first watched it because of all the goofy elements to it...it felt like the franchise that I loved and defended against all the adults I knew who dismissed it as a silly set of films was kind of confirmed to be just that after viewing this with them.
P.S I started following David Arquette on instagram last year and overnight he followed me back (probably thinking he knew me) and when I went to check this after seeing the update, he had unfollowed me lol. I was the most validated Scream fan for a hot minute and then it all got taken away.
Haven't watched yet but I'm so excited for this one!!! This was the one I saw the most growing up and then the first. I dodnt see scream 2 for a while and then have only see it a few times. I love scream 3, and I dont understand the hate. Yes its more comical but I like it. Will comment after too!
The Stab fan club of Ghostface killers was a brilliant idea.
By the way what are the rules of making a trilogy anyway? Because I never thought the movie did an adequate job explaining it. It seemed like more of a personal opinion than a fact.
They need to make a Scream where there's three or more killers (just three to be safe) and have the characters talking about how brutal and how many people are dying, there being three killers covering more ground and pulling off more kills cause three heads are better than two. They need something really fresh or the content will eventually get stale.
Her going to to Sid high school would’ve made more sense. In my mind she could’ve been the girl with the brown hair in scream 1 bathroom scene and they’ve made Judy character the cheerleader. Or they could’ve made the cheerleader Sam and Tara mom in scream 5
Hot take: Talking about Roman's motive and plan makes me realize that this is why I don't really love Scream 4, because, although I will say it's done better, Jill's plan is basically Roman's plan just better executed.
Considering he's on his own I think Roman did ok

I like Scream 3. It’s good but the fact that Roman was the “brains” behind everything pissed me off. It totally negates Billy and Stu’s importance and turns them into easily manipulated puppets. Meh, don’t like that. I preferred Stu being susceptible to Billy’s manipulation rather than have them both being Roman’s bitches.
However, being a horror fan forever, not much scares me, like at all BUT I must say the nightmare stuff with Maureen is scary as shit!! Just creepy and very unsettling!!! 😳😳😳

It doesn't take away from Billy and Stu. If anything it adds an element to their story that wasn't there prior. Roman is how they found out about Maureen in the first place.
That's not at all what happened. He just gave Billy a nudge to kill Maureen.
Everything else was all Billy.
He only showed Billy his movie and gave him some pointers, Billy and Stu had to actually plan out Maureen's murder and it was their idea to do the whole Ghostface thing we see in Scream. So Roman was far from the brains

To me Scream 3 isn’t even a horror movie. Maybe it’s the setting, or the story, or the humour, but it’s just not scary or horrific. It’s really just a murder mystery. It’s like if someone was trying to modernize an Agatha Christie novel. Scream 3 is Wes Craven’s Murder on the Orient Express.
I have to think of my ranking but 4 is definitely my last. I fall asleep everytime I watch it for some reason. Of course I love all of them!! It just seems different looking, it's darker visually on the screen idk. It just doesn't seem like the same aestetic as the first 3 and not in a good way.
4 is anything but boring. That movie is just a crazy ride starting from the opening with all the fake outs. I've seen complaints about the 4th one but it definitely isn't boring.

It is so messy isn't it? I do like certain small scenes in it like the environment setting of a stab set where Sidney gets attacked (even tho its obvious the killer is in 2 places at once) and I kinda like how they atleast kept some kind of storytelling going from the previous 2 movies with Roman being linked in some way to the original killers and Sids mum. The characters trying to do some detective work too was different and fun. I would put it probably as the 4th worst one with Scream 4 being last. Reason for it is I think Scream 4 literally adds nothing to the story neither is there any character development, suspense or good chase scenes. The opening scene is the weakest by far and the kills.. Well put it this way if you're being stabbed with a knife I'm certain you would be terrified in unimaginable pain but in Screma 4 alot of the characters just die with some unfunny one liner on their lips. If you took Scream 4 put of the franchise you wouldn't even notice anything is amiss
In the Neil and Sidney scene IMO I think stuff was definitely cut out in the final edit. I didn't find it too difficult to understand why he would ask his daughter if she was referring to her mother. In the whole conversation he expressed concern for her and I just thought he was confused because the "her" could be perceived as Sidney herself. The events of Scream 1 and 2 traumatized Sidney to the point of isolation and I think it's fair for him to ask for clarification because what if Sidney was asking her father if he missed the old her, the Sidney he used to know before she was traumatized.
So why would Sidney say "Do you ever think about her?" If she were referring to herself?
Just seems like a weird way to phrase it to me.

For the character, the devil is really in the details.
Tatum said it best “Maybe your mom was just an unhappy woman.”
And yes Tatum, she was.
I am siding with Zach here. Maureen couldn’t have been a very warm woman. I think what Sidney is remembering is the good times because she lost her mom so young and abruptly.
Maureen wanted more and it seems she never got it. I’m sure plenty of people try to make it in Hollywood and it doesn’t pan out but to never mention it? I know it could be framed that she never wanted to talk about the abuse and the baby but I also see it as her not being able to realize her dream and now pretending like it didn’t happen.
Now she’s in this marriage with a nice man and she has money but she still isn’t happy. She seemed bored and desperate for a thrill.
As Tatum said “she heard about the affair before” in regards to Cotton. Maureen was starved for attention. So it does not seem farfetched that she fawned over herself.
“Flashing her shit around town like she was Sharon Stone” like Billy reminded us.
And to slam the door in the face of a kid you gave away without even hearing him out. It’s very telling of the character within.
I liked this deep dive of the movie and happy ya’ll focused on Maureen because although I don’t think she deserved to be butchered. She really wasn’t a sympathetic character.

I am with Zack on the hate for a Stu come back but I would actually really like if Angelina was Sam and Tara`s mom, or even Amber or be related to any character in scream 6 in some way. It would be absurd and funny.

Here's my theory about Roman thinking Cotton knew where Sidney was. Cotton was working on Stab 3. So he probably met Roman. Maybe Roman asked Cotton if he could get Sidney to cameo in the film. Cotton being the way he is would be like "Oh. Of course. I know Sidney and could get her to do that." Basically he would give Roman the idea that he knew Sid's whereabouts, even though he didn't.
I actually really like the voice changer. It's one of my favorite things about the movie. The voice changer from the first film isn't real either. It's a voiceover by Roger Jackson. Time Machines didn't exist in the 80s, but no one complains about Back to the Future.
Also, I really don't understand the love Jennifer gets. For me, she's the most annoying character in the entire franchise and I can't stand her. She's really the only character I don't like in all of Scream.
With the Milton storyline I always felt like instead of some unconscious or unintentional thing like you guys suggested, that it was either Wes, Krueger, or both that very intentionally put that in there as a statement about Weinstein. Obviously at the time of filming it wasn't public knowledge but I guarantee insiders, especially someone as important as Wes Fucking Craven, knew a lot about him & others like him. Because imo, with how on-the-nose all of the things about Milton are, there's no way it isn't a direct criticism of Harvey Weinstein. When you think about little things like the fact that when the whole "sleeping with someone to get the part" trope is done in film it's almost exclusively the director whom is being the creep, not a producer.
No way anybody's making it this far but: I had so hoped one of y'all would mention this when you started talking about Parker's death scene. When she's banging on the backside of the mirrors you can see that the mirrors but perpendicularly up against a wall, the wall which Ghostface is slowly backing her into. When Dewey starts shooting he starts with the mirror furthest from Parker and then shoots each mirror subsequently in order until reaching the one that Parker was killed behind, and she falls through. Now we have already established that on one side of where she was is a wall and on the opposite side is Ghostface. We also know that, based on the scene's editing, Ghostface is in the process of dispatching Ms. Jolie WHILE Dewey's shooting out the mirrors. So why in the fuck don't we see Ghostface going back in the direction in which he and her had come from?! It's driven me nuts since I saw it in theater.

A more interesting film would've been Ghost face somehow using Sid's job to harass her. Scratch the whole Hollywood crap. Set it around Sid and Ghostface and her job as a crisis counselor. It would cap the trilogy off perfectly. Sid is trying to move on but the killer is trying to destroy the last way she feels she can help others but in the end she comes out even stronger and moves on to help people in person, by name.
Scream 4 is like the 2nd best film for me so seeing it get slandered is making me triggered lol

Only film in the franchise I don't like. The acting is just way to over the top and doesn't work for me. I think the only characters I like in this film are Sidney, Dewey, Randy and Cotton.
