  • On this video we will share what our experience has been when it comes to cost of living during the last 3 months or so. Portugal has one of the lowest cost of living in Europe. Tourists and semi retired people from all over the world are choosing Portugal to either vacation or live.
The cost of living in Portugal compare to Canada and the USA is also quite a bit lower. Things like groceries, utilities, health care, lodging, dining are just a few that make tourists, expats and semi retirees choose Portugal.
You can easily live well in Portugal on a $1000 a month cost of living budget.
Portugal also checks a lot of boxes and leads when it comes to safety, low pollution, nature. health care and much more.
We hope you enjoy this episode.
Feel free to subscribe, like and share.
We also love getting your comments.

Awesome video. We flew home from Madeira at the end of February just before lock down. We've travelled extensively throughout Western Europe, and Portugal is our favourite long term destination. I found the Portuguese people we met to be kind of Canadian - modest, good hearted. Our first post pandemic trip will be to the Azores - thanks again.

We're glad you enjoyed our video. I have been to Madeira; another Portuguese gem. Pico is a bit similar to Madeira in the way that there are no real sand beaches; mostly ocean lava pools. You are spot on; Portuguese and Canadian people are both down to earth, kind, passionate and friendly. The Azores are waiting; maybe we will see you on Pico island! Cheers!!

The thing here (i live in Pico too, but applies to most Azores Islands) is we are very limited on some things. For example, on Canada/USA you have some vet clinics bigger than the "people hospital" we have here, so more technology to deal with more specific problems we may can't deal with, which also happens in "people hospital", certain health problems you'll need to go to another island or even the mainland. It's like your comparison of Continente with the smaller super markets, describes all the living here, we may not have everything they have on the mainland but we have the essential, and i would never live in another place. Great video!

I can't argue with you; totally correct. If there is one thing that requires immediate improvement here on Pico and in the triangle islands as whole is to have a higher quality of health care access and technology. This is a must; not only for the citizens that live here; but also for the Tourists that visit! It must improve; not just my opinion but of most! All the best in 2021! Saude!

There is something precious living on an little island like that..
A little 'off-grid', not crowded and a seemingly timeless tempo everywhere..
As a Aboriginal teacher ones said: " let a drop of silence, fall in to myself.. everyday"..
      Enjoy Life, as it is.
And the medical possibility grows with that, leave the crowded city life behind, don't advice others to buy the land..
In no time, you might bring all these things you wanted, and lost the island with it..
      Keep safe!

I just discovered your site tonight and enjoyed your video very much. I am a 68yr old widow on my own in the US planning how I will live the rest of my life. My grandmother immigrated to America from Oporto, and my grandfather from Sao Jorge, but I started my life on this earth in a town in California called Pico Rivera. So it seems fitting to live out my days on Pico Island. I will be looking forward to learning more

I lived on Terceira for 2 years, from 86 to 88. At the time I did not appreciate it as I was young and missed my "life" in the US but I would love to go back now. There were no fast food places and no chain stores of any kind. You could pay one US dollar and go almost anywhere in a taxi and our rent was 120 US and water (paid 3 months at a time) was around 10 US. They would come to your door and read your electric meter and you could pay him if you wanted. Very interesting and charming island and I do miss it.

Just discovered your channel and love your presentation and content. I so enjoy your demeanour, your peaceful, zen like, being. We are from Belgium and only been to Madeira which was a gem. Would love to visit the Azores soon as they look equally stunning and peaceful. I really hope you are right, stating that small, local business's will survive in the Azores. As no where, where big chain supermarkets, or for that matter all big chains, enter the local market, locals thrive. Or it must be so remote, no chain has an interest in moving in. Keep up the good work.

Heart breaking to see mega businesses putting more local shops out of business, lived around the world and seen it too many times. That is not progress for the long run. It will be privatized before you know it.

I know what you mean; seen it myself as well. At this point I think Pico can handle 1 large store like Continent; more would not be good. I also feel that the smaller grocery enterprise can still be successful. For example we shop in both types, including the small village markets etc. Take care!

That's why we all have to fight against corporations. They have already impoverished Southern countries by stealing their raw materials but now, taking jobs away from small businesses everywhere. Can you believe Canadian and American publishing companies want to even make money on the Philippines Education system by.putting local companies out of jobs and taking big shares of private school sytem?

Well put together video, haven’t been to Pico yet...though it’s definitely the next island. Just a few corrections if I can. The first elephant in the room is exchange rate. My wife and I retired early in the states, sold the house, and shipped the stuff to a house we purchased on Terceira. Dollar was $1.08 to the Euro, it’s been climbing for the majority of the last year, and is currently $1.20. That’s a loss of over 10% in purchasing power, without adding in the cost to move the money from my bank in the states to my account here.
Taxes...low property tax. Car tax isn’t bad either. Taxes on purchased items, 18% if it’s not local. 4% if it is.
    Petrol...1.15 Euro’s/liter Diesel, gasoline is .20 higher. For westerners that’s $5-6 gal.
Cars...just know how to drive a stick
The people here are great. The meat, cheese, bread, fish, and wines are fantastic. Climate is good 7-8 months of the year, winter’s suck...not cold, just wet, windy, and rains nearly every day.
I bought into the whole “Portugal is low cost” before I moved here. It is To A Point. Just know that.

We are in Toronto now and thinking of coming to Azores in a couple of weeks, starting with a stay in Ponta Delgada using VRBO or equivalent. According to our research, there is no quarantine requirement for visitors to Portugal providing there is a negative test result within 72 hours. Wonder if this is true from what you know? We’re also trying to find out how long it takes to get results if we get the COVID test on arrival. Also, how easy it is to travel from one island to another in Azores? Appreciate any advice.

Also re hospitalization, just curious what would happen if you needed to go to the Hospital and didn't have insurance -- being Canadian (we're spoiled when it comes to healthcare as everything is covered by our taxes). Just keep in mind that you are in a very unique area of the planet and weather changes quickly. If someone wants a place that is always higher than 30, little rain or wind; you will have to go somewhere else. The Azores is all about nature, in all its power and glory. Tak ecare!

Just a few comments on an excellent video. I have lived on the mainland for thirty years but have yet to go to the Azores. I don't think your groceries would be cheaper than on the mainland since everything packaged comes from there. I'm surprised they have a Burger King and a Continente there since the population on the island was 13,465 in the last census in 2011. I wonder how Burger King is doing. If you are paying 160 euros for annual car insurance, you are getting the basic coverage, which only covers third party collisions. If you have an accident and it is your fault, you will pay for your own damage. There is no tipping culture in Portugal. I am sure Pico is very beautiful and I do want to go there once the pandemic is over. As for an expat actually retiring there the difficulty of getting out presents itself. You have to fly or take a ferry and these are not that fast. Once you see the island, after a week maybe, then what do you do?. I prefer the mainland because I can get in my car and drive all over Portugal or go into Spain, which is enormous with so much to see. Or I can be at the French border at Irún in less than seven hours. In the Azores, if a storm comes in, and there are many, you are stuck.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  3 года назад

Totally understand Roger. Islands or island life is not for everybody; especially if the reasons you mentioned are important. It really comes down to lifestyle and preference. Just a few things; very easy and quick to get between islands by ferry; especially the central group. We buy a lot of local Azores products; it's called marca Acores. We compare the cost of living more between Canada and here or Portugal as a whole. I guess you will be visiting instead of retiring here. Pico is waiting! Take care!

When I was growing up in Novato, California (across the GG Bridge from SF) there was a colony of Azoreans in my town. This was back in the nineteen fifties and sixties. There was a Holy Spirit Society that met in the I.D.E.S hall and even an annual celebration put on by the immigrants and a Portuguese queen. At the time of course I had no concept of the Azores or Portugal. There were a lot of Azoreans around the area who worked on the dairy farms. We used to call one Portuguese person a Portuguee, stupidly thinking that Portuguese was plural so Portuguee must be singular.

I told my wife that you were most likely the son or grandson of someone from the island, otherwise it would be rare for a Canadian to choose the island for retirement. I am glad you were able to go back to your roots. I have no roots myself so there is nothing to go back to. I have lived in several countries through my EFL teaching--Mexico, Brazil, and finally Portugal. I would love to go back to Mexico but not to Brazil because of the violence. At least in Pico your chances of getting mugged or held up at gunpoint are almost zero. Here in Chaves we can say the same. One final question. What happens to the locals

    • @rayvogensen2983

@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Aha, I was right. I had told my wife that you were probably the son or grandson of someone from Pico who had immigrated to Canada. It turns out that you were actually born there which is even better. Without that connection, it would be rare for a non-Portuguese heritage person to end up on Pico as they usually prefer Lisbon or the Algarve. At least you will never be mugged or held up at gunpoint, which is common in Brazil, where I lived for almost twenty years. I would never go back there. In fact a lot of my wife's relatives are thinking of coming to Portugal. One last question (I will have more in the future): I saw that there were three centros de saúde on the island, in Madalena, Lajes, and São Roque. But what happens if you get seriously ill, something that would require emergency treatment? Would they fly you to a hospital on a bigger island or maybe send a helicopter? As we get older it is comforting to know there is a hospital nearby.
