Great video. Keep reviewing and tearing down stuff. I won't complain.

I like Northridge equipment. Yeah, all these power testers are made cheaply. NF probably makes $3-$5 on this after all is said and done, cand ordering from them is faster than Alli Express.
You own their microscope? It's a beast. I've not been disappointed with any purchase from them.

In some of those, the display driver is a CoB. I wonder why they felt the need to obfuscate the display driver of all things but not the CPU.

@@made.by.morten.laboratoriesreally strange indeed, almost as if they did not want anyone identifying the lcd controller and think that the chip was copied of a different product or manufacturer idk weird!

Interesting that this tear down came up on my feed just now. I was actually looking for one a few days ago but there wasn’t really much! Anyway, I was looking because this unit has problems. Prior to buying this, I have a portapow usb tester that is highly accurate and runs from an internal battery. I also have four zxy usb 3 testers - they released a number of versions blue - green - red and orange I think (I’m colour blind) - but this is why I have four, I picked one up each time they upgraded. On top of this I have a wpt? Pd trigger that shows current and voltage for usb c. So I noticed with the uni-t that it was drawing 14ma whilst the xyz units drew just 8 and the portapow zero. No huge issue but what I also noticed was that the uni-t does not always allow the voltage to switch up or the full charging current to pass through. As an example, my iPhone 14 with a usb a lead will charge at 1.4amps roughly on the zxy devices but on the uni-t it will not got over 1 amp. with usb c charging it seems to function well and voltages switch up properly. I decided to tear mine down and found that the two high current leds from the usb c input were too large to fit through the holes on the Pcb. So only part of each cable was actually soldered and attached - approximately 2/3rd of it I’d guess - meaning (to me) that the high current limit claimed is probably not going to be achievable. Not too much of an issue but I did try to thread some fresh leads through the Pcb and join them to the old to fix the issue. Sadly made a mess of it but managed, with the positive lead, to achieve this. The usb trigger I have is complicated and nowhere near as simple to use ad the uni-t so I haven’t really compared them. I bought the uni-t a few years back thinking it would cover all my needs and whilst it’s a good little unit, it does haven its problems. Problems that my other testers do not have.

Thank you for your comment, its really interesting to read. Maybe some of the mosfets was damaged, you can always try and connect the red wires directly since the current measurement is done on the GND wire - please not that the current and voltage limit is out of function then. What do you use your tester for? Do you do repairs? I will have a look on the types that you mention here, thank you.

The low side current sense will mean the gounds either side will be different and is something I would avoid. The cheaper power supply boards you can get do similar and can cause isues if your input and output grounds touch anywhere.

@@made.by.morten.laboratories thanks to you we can check and compare specs and prices. Because you crack that thing open and give us the specs. Without that we would have no idea what to compare it to. All Northridge tells you is trust me it's good, pay me $699 without a stand. I'm not really against someone making profit but that guy is shady. He makes up his prices on the flu. If he is fixing something he will google the price of what he is fixing. And if it is expensive like say 5000 dollars this dude might change it like 2000 bucks to fix it. One of his videos showed him fixing something that he had to repair like 20 bad traces on. And he did it all in like 1 hour. He said he was going to charge $100 per trace. So that thing cost over 2 grand to fix. If he were fixing something cheap he might only charge 100 to 200 bucks for 40 minutes but since he saw that thing was expensive he charged an arm and a leg. As a computer tech My fees are static. i don't charge Mac owners more just because they have more expensive pcs. So yea thanks to you we can protect ourself from shady individuals.

Maybe i'm not very smart, but isn't the appeal of something like this having usb-c type connectivity? I mean does it test different forms of PD and stuff?

This device is just straight through also on the USB-C line. The tester will only show the voltages, it can trigger the charger to do anything. I have seen other testers that have the kind of functionallity you talk about.
