I have had one of these for a while, and have YET to fully use all the great features! It is SO useful device in an easy to use device! It really covers all the USB protocols and displays the quality of the power supply with the o'scope! Thank you for the detailed review of this device!
i use fans on the PD mode (other brand) but to acces the high voltage part you had to disconnect and select the device countlessly clicking to the desired voltage :P this seems so easy !!
Very clever device. Showing the available charge rates is a quite useful function. The scope function is interesting. The ripple from various devices has in the past created problems with some of my MCU projects. Another very helpful video. This device is listed on Amazon, but at twice the aliexpress pricing.
I have one of these units and use it for measuring down to 10uA currents at 3-5V in a ATTINY85 using sleep mode and it works great. I really recommend FNB58
Woah, this is the coolest and most feature rich USB tester I've seen. Not only good for testing voltages but would be very handy for sorting out my USB cables too. Love your channel mate!
Have zero clue why i need this, i just subscribed because you killed it with the topdon 04. Now i want this thing. If you did a video on eggs and bacon i think i would get hungry lol
VERY THOROUGH description. It’s about time someone covered this well. I’ve been using this device for quite a few months now and I still learned a couple of things here. I guess sometimes you just have to RTFM (or wait for a good video by Julian to come out.)
I have this beauty since a few months but never really used it because I was not sure what stuff I can do with it besides measuring power flowing through it. But this could be also done by my older power meters. Now I know what I can do with it. Thanks Julian.
PE+ means "Pump Express". And you should do an update to your device. Then it can detect QC 4+, too. With the Cable Resistance Detection I sorted out about 30 shitty USB cables and only keep the good ones. Most of the cables delivered with a device are just garbage, but there were some positive surprises, too.
That red powerbank looks like one I have, where you insert your own. 18650, or in my case 21700s. Is it just me, or is the percentage calculation really unreliable? It drops very quickly on an initial load, but lasts a lonnngggg time at the lower percentage readings.
The latest firmware version v0.68 removed the "USB-C E-Marker" function from the toolbox, So I had to roll back to v0.67. I've contacted Fnirsi but they've not fixed it yet.
I found the information when I had a USB C to C cable plugged in under USB-C Cable in toolbox, on v0.68. I think they just integrated the e-marker functionality into the USB-C cable test functionality.
@@alexa5231I tried updating it to v0.68 again and had a look in the "USB-C Cable" menu and sure enough the info is on the second screen after pressing the jog wheel. Not as obvious as before, but thanks for making me aware of it.
Hi, I tried to upgrade to v068 but I couldn't find how to put the device in bootloader mode, any hint please on how to to that? in the manual, the instructions only say to select the file and upgrade it !!!
@@cyrixone2771 To update it, you need a decent USB data cable. Press and hold in the toggle button, then plug the USB cable into a computer. This should then make the FN58 show up as a USB drive in your computer. Place the update file in the drive and it should update.
Thanks for the awesome video. This is a very interesting tester. I love getting a no nonsense insight into cheap test equipment. Would you be interested in doing a video on one of the "elejoy" branded PV panel testers that are all over aliexpress? I haven't yet found a good video on them and they look very interesting to me.
14:00 PD 100W? That's BS. It can do only 20V 3A. Or maybe it's a cable issue: you need a cable with an Id chip to tell the PD system that the cable will handle 5A without melting.
How do you know? The power bank he used wasn't even shown on-screen. The Anker 737, for example, has no problem at all putting out circa 140W, so 100W certainly is attainable. What exactly are you objecting to?
I would suspect that they could've settled for 2 or 3 decimals. I can't imagine the last digits are really that accurate, and who would need such data when checking cables/devices anyway?
Great device, just got one. That white power bank looks like it's got a bad filter capacitor in its circuit. I wouldn't use it. Shows you the kind of useful information you can get from this device!
The cable resistance measurement is very inaccurate. I compared it to measurements with a milli-ohmmeter that i have, and as a matter of fact, the FNB58 shows values that deviate by up to 200% error from the real value. Bayond that, measuring the current is done with a shunt, and that does have repercussions to the measurement. The value of the shunt is 10 mOhm. For a measurement device it would be important to know that, but it is nowhere mentioned in documentation. To be fair, other, cheaper such "measurement" devices have even higher shunt values, which makes them reallly crab. 10 mOhm is not a really bad value for such an application, but ideal would be a current sensor with µOhm, which are available today.
can this device test a usb-c cable by pugging it into both input and output ports. i.e testing for dud cables? or is there a better option. can you recomend a better place to buy good USB-c Cables? it seems to be a mind field when i start looking. i am lost on where to begin.
BTW how would you measure cable resistance of a USB-C USB-C cable? Or USB-A USB-A? Not possible without some adapter, right? (which has an unknown resistance of its own)
Hi, you know how i can test accurate battery capacity?(battery CAP Calculation) if i test with default settings battery voltage: 3.7v and conv. eff: 90% i have more mah than real, tested against klein tools battery tester. i need move these battery settings?
What this device have more than other USB devices for mesuring current? I had two of this devices and i think they are total garbage because these devices limits the current that flow through the cable compared without this device. These devices have their own resistance and therefore distort the measurements.
Hola porfavor necesito que alguien me explique que fallas detecta este usb!!! Si el movil por ejemplo carga correctamente aunque este apagado que significa ? O si no enciwnde ni hace nadq y carga normal que puede see ?
I have this one and am completely disappointed. Living in 2024 you would expect such a unit to support USB 3.0. It doesn't. No data is going through, so it is impossible to test USB3 buspowered devices, as without data they simply don't start up.
I honestly don't know if a single one of these devices that actually use USB 3.0 to be fair there is really no specific need for USB 3.0 because everything goes through quickly enough at USB 2.0 speeds it's not like you're transferring large amounts of data.
@@abnormaltrusk12 Your reply would have had merit 5 years ago. USB 3 is everywhere and I constantly need that mode to check the power reuirements and behaviour when DUTs run in that mode. Fortunately meanwhile there are others that fully support that, and I use them succesfully. FNIRSI is clearly lagging behind here.
This is an expensive device. Not so much the rather hefty price in itself, but for all new cables I will have to buy after checking my current ones I'm pretty certain most cables that came with devices are rubbish😊
Heh, even on ali, 40 Eww Ess Dollahs. There aren't enough ways it can give me pleasure to justify that much when I can, for my own pedestrian needs, just plug a cheaper USB current meter in and see how something is charging. If my widget charges fast enough for my needs, purpose met.

Am I right in thinking that the 'resistance' is the sum of the resistances on the GND and Vbus lines?
@@Brian_Of_Melbourne No, it's just the resisitance of the wires 5 volt and ground. On the bus lines floats almost no current.
I’m thinking of getting this unit too filter through a box of cables and chargers, and sort them based on capability.
