      Thanks guys.. I remember reading about that first race meeting with the spectrum at the world championships in a magazine and remember how amazing the difference was in RC car racing as we got off the analogue gear and didn't have to worry about crystals and having a big crash and damaging crystals anymore.. I've been out of RC for many years but I remember and appreciate the hard work you guys did in those early days of 2.4

    If it wasn't for safe and spektrum I wouldn't be flying today. Tried forever with a regular system and kept crashing and gave up until I found the Sport Cub S with safe and it changed my life. Thanks to Spektrum, I still fly it on all my airplanes.

      @Gabo H for most people who use it a lot it's not a necessity, just how they prefer to fly I guess. He could've been referring to the panic button feature of SAFE, perfectly valid reason to want it on your craft

    I don't think hating on any of the respectable brands is in the best interest of our (and related) hobby, nor is it cool.
    Spectrum is targeting the larger market portions, which is Ground and Fixed Wing. That is where they put the bulk of their efforts. This is a business decision, and you can't hate them for wanting to stay in business and make money. The best product ever made becomes unavailable if it's manufacturer can't afford to exist, or to do a proper job of manufacturing and sales.
    Those of us in the FPV realm are a tiny portion of market share, and while we can sustain small businesses, the big money isn't here, and the Industry giants know it. One has only to look at the situation with Horizon's closest competitor to see how fragile the hobby industry really is.
    I've been in model planes (and cars) on and off since the 70s, and even at it's heyday - when balsa, silk and nitro were king, it was supported by hundreds of Ma and Pa business. We have lost an alarming number of them recently, including major Propeller, Radio System, Plane kitting, Covering film, and engine manufacturers, and as already mentioned major wholesalers. While that has happened, others have appeared, many which support mainly US, the FPV/Drone community. Unfortunately, it's not an even trade, and amounts to a huge net shrinkage. What is lost isn't just financial. The technical expertise of the lost companies is a resource we (and our offspring) will never have available again. Virtually every one of these firms began as a hobbyist who had a better idea, hired his friends and grew it into a business. They would answer the phone if you needed advice on what fuel mix to use, or which prop was best. This is a loss to our larger community that I sadly fear we may never regain.
    It's easy to judge the decisions of these companies, but before you do, take a walk in their shoes.
    If we don't support those who supply the industry in general, we will soon have only cheap Chinese injection molded junk at our disposal.
    I'm not advocating flying anything but your favorite, but see no reason to bash others.
    The company you bash today may well be your salvation down the road. Who knows, does Spektrum have the next FPV breakthrough on a test bench somewhere? While the auto industry can handle the Chevy-Ford battle, I'm not so sure our little corner of the hobby industry can tolerate the harsh divisiveness. It benefits no one, and weakens our hobby as a group.
    If you're new to the game, and know only Quads or FPV (many FPV fliers just discovered the hobby), look into how the "old-timers' did it. It's an amazing story, and there's a lot to be learned from the history of model aviation. If you're an FPV flier, I'll bet you're the sort of person who can appreciate the early technology developed by our fathers and grandfathers - dig into it and be amazed what they did with some wood, wire and glue.
    Thanks to the insight of people like John Adams, we are where we are now. The existence of our favorite pastime grew from the roots he put down.
    Sorry for the soapbox 'rant', but it's how I feel - thanks for listening.

      The loss of local hobby shops is an absolute tragedy, and I firmly do believe it hurts the hobby as a whole.
      The knowledge and local aid available has absolutely been decreased as the internet became the major source of purchase and I didn`t at the time, but now I do, believe that it all started with the foamies :/
      I still think accessibility is important for the hobby, but I also feel like a big part of it, is getting lost, as seemingly noone are building, let alone scratch building models anymore..
      It`s fun to fly, but flying something you made entirely on your own is so much more than just getting a foamie or any pre-built model, that you don`t really care about :)
      I really feel it`s important that people learn about and understand the beginnings of the hobby, and experience as much of the early days as possible, (like flying a 2ch, Cox0.8), so for that reason, I feel that it`s important the we all document and detail our knowledge and experience with models, and share them, online and with people, so "the journey of rc" can be shared and enjoyed, by people to come ;)

      A Frog Yes I agree ,the huge influx of arfs and foamies has bought new life to the hobby and bought masses of young people into it.In Australia the hobby was nearly dead save for a few old guys building their own planes. I started with arfs and foamies but became bored with cookie cutters so now I build my own and find it much more rewarding.

    What a cool opportunity to talk with an RC pioneer. I am one of the folks that really took this all for granted. I have been doing this for a little over 3 years and it was almost too much for me to get into even after guys like John introduced tech that makes it so much simpler. I can't imagine trying to get into this hobby even 20 years ago. There is so much to learn and technical hurdles to jump to be able to get out and enjoy flying. So I am profoundly thankful that folks like John who are passionate about RC dedicate so much time to making it easier and more accessible to mildly technical nerds like me to put something together that is airworthy. I've said it before many times but it can't be overstated; without people like John, and especially Bardwell who put so much useful info in one spot for me to learn from, I wouldn't be able to do this.
    So thanks, Josh, I love all your vids but especially these interviews because it allows me to reflect on just how much work was done before I ever even watched my first quadcopter video on RUclips (Charpu's Left Behind I think)

    Spektrum makes a damn good Radio. There is allot Mis information and hate in the “community” that I have never quite understood the source of. For me? The DX8 Gen2 is the best Radio for $300 and everything I need for all my quads and Wings. I started with a DX6E that my son uses now. The serial non telemetry receivers I did not like and they did not have the best range. That had nothing to do with the radio though. The newer receiver that has telemetry? I love. It has excellent range and solid reliable telemetry. Replaceable antennas and yes it is $40. But! You get the customer support and warranty tgough Horizon that you will not get elsewhere in this hobby. It’s your money. Take it from a guy that is not sponsored and pays for every single part. It’s been a good investment for me. Good content I have been taking a break on all FPV but this caught my attention 😎👍

      because spektrum is an unreliable radio, you brown out and you investment is gone, most giant scale use Futaba, Futaba is been bullet proof, and Frsky Taranis X9D is been a revolution in quality and price. I just got a friend with DX18 and a rx that cost 300 dollars, we tested and long history short, than good we tested, because we had to send it back, the radio had a range of less than .5 miles. I own all those radios, and spektrum is for foamies, no even quads. May be they got better, but I will not tested with my equipment.

    Awesome interview, Talking about this hobby from the pass, I was sorting out the shed last week and I found my old ( Chicken finger ) from about 30 years ago. If you don't know its a rubber sleeve you put over your finger to spin up the motor on a plane, it has thick chunky parts coming from the back, so when the prop spun around it didn't cut your finger off.

    This is cool! I actually started flying about 23 years ago on 72 MHz and I remember if a bolt on landing gear came loose and started vibrating it would cause major radio interference! The motor would sometimes cause interference, it was really hard, especially with helicopters, basically any metal on metal movement was potentially a problem that could destroy your aircraft, today it's so much easier, and safer and people don't realize that. Thanks for making this video Joshua Bardwell!! Glad you are showing people that the hobby has gained so much development in 30 years.

    First, I am grateful of the pioneering work in which Spektrum has done for the hobby. It really has changed the way we fly planes, helis, quads etc. I have been flying since 1985, before the 1991 narrow band change on 72 mhz. Yes, we used to impound radios for frequency control. While that did improve safety, I did shoot one plane down and have been shot down once. Lesson on diligence learned.
    That said, John did dodge the brown out question. I have not personally seen a brown out on the early systems, there were plenty of reports of it happening. While I was not an early adopter of Spectrum for air based systems, I did use it in RC cars. I purchased their first low latency module for my Kopro radio against the advice of other racers. I was warned about its limited range vs the slower protocol. They were right, 100%. While it was fine to use as a basher, you could not reliable race with it without fear of lowing signal on the far corners of the track. Even at that, the slower protocol was good enough. This is also where many of us get in trouble. WE want the fastest system and make sometimes make dumb sacrifices to get it. Faster is not always better, sometimes it is pointless.
    Moving on to my first air experience with DSM. I had a JR 8130 (or 8301, I forget the model) radio. I purchased a DSM2 module for this system after it had been on the market. From my experience, the link was solid. My problem with it was the plastic case was brittle and broke around the screw holes which kept it together. I was not aware this was happening as I left the module in my tx all the time once I left 72 Mhz. Well, during one flight, the module came out of my tx. It did not fall to the ground but it lost electrical contact with my tx. Yes, my plane crashed. I had people tell me that I altered the module. I did not. This was at the time Taranis+ came out. I was so mad a Horizon for not replacing my plane, that I figured I could get treated like crap for 1/3 the amount of money that Horizon wanted so why not switch. Since then, I have not looked back. 20 years of being sold on JR ended that day. Taranis might not be as fast as the Spektrum offering, but it works well enough without having to do 900 mhz offering. If the system were to be 2x faster, I would not notice it with my skills. Sometimes, good enough is indeed, good enough. The new offering from Spektrum is interesting but I am not willing to jump from Taranis after the investment that I have made in them and the support that the community gives to Taranis users.

    I remember getting the first release dx6 and getting crap at the flying field about impound. I was the only one with spektrum at the event and the only one who did not need to use impound. I remember so many people walking over and saying "Hey you have to put........ Oh you have that damn thing." It was great. The next funfly was 50% spektrum radios. That was an amazing year.

    When I left the RC hobby in about 1998 we still used Crystals like radios from the 30s... Total PITA, if you dropped one while extracting it to swap channels it could break. I had like 3 sets and kept them wrapped in cotton wool in my pit box...
    When I came back to RC in 2012 2.4GHz was literally something from another century as far as reliability & usability is concerned. I did not know the pioneering role that Horizon /Spectrum played in that development.
    Thanks Joshua for the interview, and the previous ones with Fatshark and ImmersionRC. They are not too technical for a large part of your audience - quite the opposite. keep them coming.

    I loved this content! Yes you are right for me it could be even more technical but i do understand that you can't go crazy on that. I did get the feeling like that the quad/fpv world isn't really a market for them as he didn't show any new receiver specifically for quads. I started with spektrum and I liked it for my planes, nice and easy to use. But as he mentoined Taranis with the telemetry and better range evnetually pulled me over. I would think that the will sell more if they would make a controller specifically for fpv pilots with a nice matching receiver but hey, it does cost a lot of money to develop that too.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад +1

      I agree. From spending time with a lot of Horizon guys, the biggest hurdle for them is their entrenched market of fixed-wing pilots. They could built the ultimate mini quad radio, but 1) it would disrupt their whole product line relative to fixed wing, and 2) culturally it would be a hard sell because the decision makers at Horizon are all plane and surface guys, not FPV guys.

  • @skippyippydippy
    @skippyippydippy 6 лет назад

    I've used spektrum for fixed wing and Heli for ages and love their kit and never had a moment's trouble........until I took up flying quads and found the range near the ground absolutely diabolical! I put a DX8 DX9 and ix12 on an analyzer and found the pulse widths transmitted are tiny compared with other makes. Don't know much about the theory - but the duty cycle seems to show that although the peak power is equivalent the average radiated power is about 10 times less!

    Started flying around 1999. Had the occasional futaba but had a ton of JR 72mhz equip. No problems at all. Spektrum came out and I didn't want to pay the early adopter/beta crashing so I waited until it was out a little while. Eventually bought a DX8 when they first came out and immediately had to send it in because of the pot recall. Then nothing but glitches along the way. I could consistently repeat lock outs in some locations. Everything from low end (name brand) receivers up to the top of the line with telemetry. I eventually jumped on the frysky taranis wagon which sat for months because it seemed to difficult to setup. Eventually put the time in and NEVER had one glitch in any of the same planes with frsky. It was like rediscovering the hobby and finding faith in my equipment again. I spend thousands every year on rc equipment for planes and multirotor that they have missed out on due to the excuses and my experience. Horizon as a company has always given me amazing service though so I have no problem supporting their other products.

    I’m an old rc giy. I remember the days when you had the change crystals. So ok. I went with spectrum when I started this hobby 18 months ago. In no time one of the gimbals was rough and sticking. So I contacted horizons. They won’t sell me a gimbal. I have to fill in a form. Send off my transmitter. Wait for them to repair it. And the cost estimate with postage was more than buying a qx7. So, my sx6 collects dust and I now fly frsky.
    That’s not good Spektrum. I appreciate the design and the quality feel of their tx’s. I still argue they feel better in the hand than the frsky tx’s. But with that kind of back up service it’s just not what we’re looking for.
    And yes...seeing comments here about the rx’s. They have diversity receiver now. The woad racer is 25 bucks though. More by double than an xm plus for example.
    Shame really.
    Spektrum. You need to bring down your prices. Let us service ourselves. And you’ll open up more of the market. I’m sore Spektrum will be reading these. You can see the comments negative vs positive. I wonder if that will bring some home truths to the company.
    But thanks for the innovation. Can’t knock that.

      Same here, i had a DX6i, the yaw potentiometer broke. In the end i got some taranis gimbals and installed them... Oh, and they don't repair modded radios, i've installed backlight in mine, so i had no other choice.

      We respect your opinion, and would have to agree that, partially, it is money. Lets say someone replaces a gimbal incorrectly, and crashes their model, damaging property or hurting themselves or someone else, because of the botched repair? And this pilot decides that were we being negligent by selling the part to someone whom was not qualified to do the repair. These are the types of things that go through our heads when this question is asked. Lawsuits can be expensive! Along with that we feel that to many of our customers and in the RC community in general, having a dedicated staff of repair technicians is a great service to provide. That way Spektrum users can be confident that their item is repaired propperly. On top of that, every radio that goes through our service centers are tested to be fully functional and outputting RF power and signal propperly. And FYI our service centers are not intended to be a form of revenue, but to provide a service. The majority of the repairs we do, in and out of warranty, are done at no cost to the consumer. NOW with that being said, we do want to start selling more parts to help keep users from having too much down time for repairs. and hopefully we can meet those needs in the near future.

    I started flying with a DX6i, RC planes and early quads, but as I started fpving I wanted more out of my controller. The old DX6i is such a pain to setup for quads and you're limited by models, sure the new DX12 is probably easy to setup, but it costs a lot more than my X7, plus the receivers are so expensive. So that's why I don't fly spektrum for my FPV stuff anymore, but all my planes I still use the ole trusty DX6i.

    The glitching/range issues were mostly with DSM/DSM2. I've experienced them myself. DSMX seems to work much better. I own both Spektrum and Futaba radios. Spektrum has a better UI/more intuitive to program. Futaba seems to be a better radio (transmit/receive).

    Is this spec correct?. I am looking at 'EMAX RSII 2306 1900kv Motor' and the spec says 3s-6s, and it also says max thrust is 2250g (on 4S). If the motor is indeed rated for 6s, how do you get more thrust on 4s?

      There's no way this motor makes 2250 grams on 4S. That's got to be a mistake. Maybe 1250.

    Another problem is, that the FPV market is just too small. The RC market is not that big and FPV is just a small part of it. If it would sell in the hundreds of thousands, we would probably already have it.

    Actually I believe NOMADIO was the first company to offer broad spectrum to the RC community and they were also the first to have real time telemetry. These were ground based transmitters. At the time they were working on getting the licensing to do air. It should be noted that they primarily did military contracts but delved into the private sector for a little bit .

    I think Spektrum could have taken a large slice of the miniquad cake, but that train's gone now. They should have made a radio with proper telemetry a while ago, without the need of buying extra parts for the receiver to measure battery voltage, etc. And audio warnings, it's so important for FPV.
    Now it's just impossible to beat frsky, it's integration in betaflight, smartport, lua scripts, etc.
    I don't know, maybe it's not too late to come out with something that has the functions of the taranis, or even more. But not for a fortune, obviously. And hall gimbals. :)

  • @potjnkye86
    @potjnkye86 6 лет назад +2

    Why can I get a 16 dollar diversity receiver with telemetry from FrSky and they're tiny not to mention how they can be upgraded just by reflashing, but with spektrum I gotta pay 50 bucks for the same receiver from spektrum. I'm not worried about being connected to WiFi or Bluetooth. Sure the ix12 and dx6r are cool but ridiculously expensive.

    I'will stick to Graupner HoTT. Both were the first, with integrated telemetry, but Graupner was the first, who delivered. That was therefore my choice for Graupner, because i wanted this feature.My friends who bet on Spektrum were very jealous that I was able to use the functions while Spektrum was still waiting for them.

    It seems the bands we choose to operate on is the key component. Could 2.4ghz video be the next step to get better video penetration when flying in trees and behind buildings? How to get those 2.4 antennas smaller?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      Then it would interfere with 2.4 control. No good. 2.4 video will have very limited use as long as 2.4 control is in wide use.

    • @didactylos4diddy474
      @didactylos4diddy474 6 лет назад

      And anyway the difference in penetration between 5.8 and 2.4 is minimal.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      The latency on the DJI link is waaaaay too high for FPV. This is one of the tradeoffs you get. With high latency you can increase range. Also they are way more expensive than most FPV transmitters. They are heavier. They consume more power. They are a part 15 licensed device. Etc....

    For their surface products glitches and range issues are a well documented fact, there are plenty of forum threads and YT videos to be found on the web. I own several Spektrum TXs DX2E, DX4C, DX4S, and a bunch of older DSM stock radios. I've had my fair share of issues, but I stick with Spektrum because I also own many Losi RCs that still have the stock Spektrum RXs and changing brands would cost major $$$. Also, Spektrum brought on a lot of hate after they didn't warn users that flashing their TXs with the latest firmware would remove legacy support for their DSM protocol. And surface receivers aren't cheap so naturally folks with handfuls of legacy DSM receivers were livid.
    Last time I was at an RC race track all the big name sponsored drivers either used Futaba or Sanwa (Airtronics). But last time I went to the local RC airfield its ALL Spektrum, from the guy with the $100 plane to the guy with the $1000+ plane.
    Anyways, I've been wanting to get into FPV quads and never thought about TX latency until watching this video. For RC cars the difference between a low and high latency RX is night and day. Its in the order of milliseconds but you can definitely feel the difference in responsiveness. So now I need to decide between buying a Frsky or Spektrum TX.
