    Great video; especially on thoroughly explaining FeedForward in easy to understand terms!!
    Helping with some testing, and if folks like the 3.5 Dynamic Notch improvements - fingers crossed they do! - they will love what is coming in BF 4.0 [in January... :-) ... take a day]. It is even more improved, but alas, again after the cutoff for 3.5.
    ... and since no one is commenting on the Butter bit at the end .... Good stuff. Fun to play with the drama. It is a hobby for most. So having fun is what it is all about.

      @@uavtech Thanks for all your work! I have been enjoying your filter explanations/recommendations for a while now..
      I've also been (casually) testing BF3.4 and 3.5 on my 68mm-120mm Whoops and micro's. I don't have any structured data for you, but my first impressions are that 3.5 is really fantastic.
      Cheers for that!

    I have a 3” build running a racerstar starf4 aio board with aokfly 1407 4200kv motors. 3.4 made the quad almost unflyable. Motor were extremely hot no matter what tune I put on it. This was not the same on another, more under powers 3” that I have runnin 10a escs and 1306 3500kv motors. I also have a wizard x220s that had no issues with 3.4. I decided to flash all three with 3.5.... just WOW! I left the tune stock on all three and just adjusted the my rates. They all fly amazing. My 3” racers are completely different animals now. Glad I saw this video though. As I just flashed them today, I was a bit curious about the new features. Thanks again! You are an inspiration bro!

    I've been watching your channel but this, somehow, is the firth Tim I'm commenting. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate what you do. I rely heavily on your instruction and appreciate your contribution to the hobby. Given that I'm well informed but still novice, I feel like I've been through all the noob experiences with moves included. Thanks for educating us, and keep the content coming! (Videos where you test things with stick position overlay are awesome and my personal fave)
    Happy flying!

    Us poor end users that are still learning to fly are getting whiplash Betaflight has advanced so much in the last year or so.
    I built a HelioSpring quad to try Butterflight and haven't had a chance to fly it yet. (and now I heard it's dead somewhere, wonder if my Helio will work on Betaflight), oh, yeah - where did I put that Quad I flashed with the Kalman filters?
    As overwhelming as the drinking from a firehose info feed is, it would be virtually unfathomable without your tutorials. Thanks for keeping up with it all, I usually watch these videos and let it settle in a couple days, then go back and watch it again. It seems to help, and even though I'm usually a few months behind, thanks to you, I have a pretty good grasp of it all most of the time.
    Looking forward to watching you run 3.5 thru the Kopis.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад +2

      The thing is, nobody is forcing you to upgrade, and if you do upgrade, the defaults probably are going to work well for you. So even though there are tons of under-the-hood changes, you should still be able to keep up... or choose not to keep up, as you prefer.

    • @scottmarshall6766
      @scottmarshall6766 6 лет назад

      I know - they really fly great on defaults, but I have the 'can't stop screwing with it' disease. I've got a couple really good flying ones I leave alone so I can get stick time in, which is what I need much more than a better flying quad.
      One problem is I come from model airplanes and really enjoy building, but it gets expensive to always have a new quad on the bench. I'm finishing up this one for Rampage and stopping (for now...)
      Having fun so I'm not complaining. Thanks!

    Thanks Joshua, I have learnt so much over the last week from your videos! I am new to quads (a week in) but not new to flying (been flying RC for over 40 years). I have a 140mm frame quad set up using the OMNIBUS F4SD and it flew OK after programming using your excellent how to set up from scratch video. However, a wire snapped off the receiver while hovering and it dropped about 3 metres landing upside down on cement quite hard. Now as the quad lifts above say 2 feet it goes into an uncontrollable roll to the left. Below that height it stable, as it approaches that height it becomes quite unstable and wobbles, once it hits that height there is no controlling it even with full right stick. I ran it up on Betaflight without the props and as the motors his about 50% the graphic of the quad in the first tab of Betaflight shows it rolling to the left even though it sitting still on the table beside me. Any ideas? I have updated it to 3.5 with default settings and the transmitter is at default except for an arm and a angle/horizon/rate switch. I am thinking that the gyro may have been damaged in the crash, though the only physical damage was 2 cracks in the very light weight prop guards. Cheers for any input, Dave.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      Something doesn't add up here. If the gyro showed the quad rolling left, then the quad would roll right in flight, to counteract the perceived left roll.
      But the bottom line is, you crashed it from 3 meters onto cement, and now it flies weird.
      If it hovers, then I think the ESC and motors are okay.
      If it tumbles out of the air, then it might be a damaged motor.
      If it rolls left as if you were giving it stick input, then I think it's a damaged FC.

    • @JustAskDave
      @JustAskDave 6 лет назад

      Yep, same thoughts all around that I was having. Guess I will see if I can get hold of an new FC and see what happens. Thanks heaps for your thoughts and keep up the good video content!

    • @JustAskDave
      @JustAskDave 6 лет назад

      OK, did some more digging, no issues with the software and asit turned out no issue with the FC either. The build instructions were a bit wrong in my mind, they had an o-ring below the ESC and one below the FC. Moved them to be above/below the FC and it now flies stable again though with a massive vibration. Whilst hovering for a couple of minutes one blade self destructed, so I think I know where the vibration was coming from! Now to source some new blades... Thanks heaps for your reply and thanks heaps for your videos, have learnt so much in a very short time.

    3.5 flies great! I have one quad on 3.4 and another on 3.5. The 3.5 one needed, and still needs, a bit more tuning. But that quad always seemed to need more tweak compared to my other one. One thing I noticed is that propwash handling is better on 3.5, and I thought 3.4 was pretty damn good already. It took me a couple days to convince myself to give 3.5 a try because I thought there was no way it could be any better than 3.4. I was wrong, it is better.

  • @dabit4840
    @dabit4840 6 лет назад

    I tinkered a lot with BF3.4, but I never managed to make it fly without a glitch here and there, and the best I could get was 'Oh, it is OK', but never 'Amazing!'
    The BF3.5RC2 which is on the quad right now is totally different. Went through a tuning session, ended up with fairly high PID numbers, verified the results with Plasmatree and the blackbox analyzer, and the quad flies sharp like a razor. Zero dipping, zero propwash oscillations, smooth sounding and cool motors, extra flight time, totally unimpressed by strong wind, and a magnitude more precise steering than I managed to get with 3.4
    The only 'extra' thing I had to do was increase TPA a bit (breakpoint 1350, attenuation 0.3) to cope with oscillations at the upper throttle range where the (usually beat-up) props are starting to disturb things.

    Betaflight 3.5 is bringing some really interesting features! Unfortunately the quad I'll be buying to start in the hobby is a 2015/16 quad with 2204s and a CC3D (I'm only buying it because it includes a Fatshark Attitude v2 :P). Soon I will modernize that thing...
    It's also nice to know you're working with Holybro for the Kopis 2! Ask them to give their customers the possibility to choose between the F40s and the F60s, it'd be awesome!

    Dynamic notch improvements and feedforward in BF 3.5 are definitely worth to try. Will do that by myself when rain will end here. In fact I should thank BF devs for freeing us from tinkering with stuff that actually can tinker itself. The next little breakthrough probably will be dynamic PIDs that will allow us to forget about PID tuning completely except some very specific cases. Other good thing in usage easing direction would be a setup wizard for board direction/motors/etc. like Kiss configurator have.
    Butterflight in general is same Betaflight with Kalman filter and flawed AKK SmartPort implementation. After filtering improvements in Betaflight 3.4 release I can't see a big reason to use Butterflight anymore. Although there are always someone who wish to be more different than others. Wish them luck in being alternative ;)
    Have no luck with rain at today too. However it gave me a little spare time so I'm now building 3rd racing quad on Floss frame.

    Really good explanation of feed forward and dynamic filter changes - but, as UAVTech commented - amazing things are happening with the dynamic filter. I've been testing each new variation, and the work of CTZSnooze and UAVTech is producing truly amazing results in terms of the accuracy and effect of the dynamic filter. CTZSnooze, in particular, has had some real epiphanies about how the DF should work, to the point where, in flying the latest beta variant today, I found that the Dynamic Filter performed like a magician in terms of exactly tracking peak noise from 150hz to nearly 700hz, and with no bandpass filter involved. I wish these changes could be incorporated into 3.5.0 stable, but, as UAVTech said, they are scheduled for BF 4.0 due to the feature freeze on 3.5.0. The really cool thing is that, properly configured, the new black magic works as well on micros as full-sized quads.

    Now I don't know what feedforward does in Betaflight, but if it is corretly named, it does NOT respond to the speed of the stick, but its' position. Basically, the idea of the feedforward in PIDs is that it would handle the ideal response of your system, and the PID handles all the disturbance. Basically, to turn at a certain roll rate, you'd need to have a certain difference in motor power. Feedforward should just shove this power setting at the motors each and every time, while the PIDs handle the deviation. It improves response time and control quality (overshoot, "bounceback" etc.) significantly.
    But from your explanation, it sounds like the betaflight devs have just once again used a standard term improperly. I also think that proper feed-forward would be too hard to tune for regular pilots, as you'd need to work with logs. But when you have a proper FF, the results would be amazing.

    Our Dearest Joshua, thank you so føkken much! No one but you makes it clear. But: how do you suggest to tune a kwad from scratch in 3.5? Since BF now has GPS Rescue I want to flash my new long range 7" setup with BF rather than iNav, but BF defaults are good for an average 5" but not for a sluggish efficient 7" (2206 1400kv on 4S, 390 grams without a battery, about 800 grams with a suggested battery). Is it better to turn off all the new features (AG, FeedForward, I-term rotation and relax, RC smoothing) and tune like in old days, or just flash 3.5.0 defaults, tune and then add I-term relax, and the rest of new wonderful features to my taste? I just want to have a smooth slow locked-in flyer but with an ability to do a few flips.
    About RC smoothing: release note says "IMPORTANT: SBus or FPort users should set their radio link to D16 mode and no more than 8 channels", but I'm running L9R receiver in LR12 mode (SBus, 12 channels) -- what can go wrong?
    Thank you, oh Mr. FPV KnowItAll!

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      If you are using RC Smoothing with 12 channels, the default parameters won't be right for the frame rate, and the smoothing won't "smooth" properly. Probably your quad won't fall out of the sky though :-)

    Honestly it's fantastic but there is a learning curve along with it. I'm loving 3.5 for everything freestyle and race right now BUT on really tight tracks 3.5 has been harder to tune exactly the way I want it to fly (3.4 caused me some issues and I only tried 3.4 rc2 and rc3 and then went back to 3.3 right away because i was getting hot motors on quads that have never had hot motors and no matter what I did.. I had hot motors) on 3.3 I could quickly dial a track quad in exactly how I wanted it for said track... 3.5 flies better no doubt but tuning it's taking me 2 to 3 times as long to dial it in to the track and make it feel how I want it to feel but once it's there it's really... really good. I will say one thing on some custom wound ultra light weight 1807 on a 187 gram dry weight build (frame is designed to fly a clean race not crash lol but super mega light weight and braced in a way to make it really stiff even tho it's only 2mm plate and 2.5mm arms) with tattu 95c R-line 850s and some Demon props 5x4.3x3 (3.1 gram prop that are super stiff and fly amazingly well but don't crash well yet again) the motors man handle these props, AUW with the 850 4s R-lines is 292 grams and on smaller tracks 430 to 450 gram AUW 2207 and 2306 powered rigs just flat get are alive... The 850s are very small track packs only they give plenty for the motors BUT not if I'm in the 80 to 100% throttle range for any lengths of time I won't finish the race.. long drawn out comment but explaining in detail... when I hit the small track races I will normally take 6 of these identical builds with me as they don't handle crashes very good at all (I cut the frames my self so I don't mind breaking them it's a quick swap of a arm and back at it) on 3.3 I tuned the quads with exactly the same numbers and they all flew 98% identical, and with in 1 or two packs I had them dialed in to that track exactly how I wanted them... on 3.5 this isn't the case, there is noted differences in tune on each build and I understand that some what due to this motor makes a little more vids then that one and so forth... but the part that's really kicking my butt is that getting the quads to corner super tight and not blow out wide on turns (not because I'm coming in to hot or late and blowing out the turn) causes me to get prop wash Os and when I tune those Os out then I'm back to blowing out turns, on 3.3 getting it in and out with almost no prop wash Os was simple but to get it to come In to a tight 180 and then bite and go on 3.5 without prop wash Os I can't do it on these quads, on my bigger 2207 and 2306 powered light weight race ships it's no issue at all but on these it almost seems it can't be done on 3.5 maybe there's a new setting that will help and I'm trying to tune them simular to how I would a 3.3 quad (not using numbers from 3.3 but the tuning method I use) and maybe there's something I need to be doing... rather then tightening up the quad with P and then eliminating prop wash with D until it's exactly where I want it... is it on 3.5 that I'm missing something and tuning is just a whole different ball game on it and you can tune 3.5 with the same method that you did on 3.3 and before? If I can't get these ultra lights to feel as much better on 3.5 over 3.3 as I have the power house 5 inch ships I'm running then I'm gonna be neatly unbeatable on smaller tracks... but at this time my avg lap on one track is about two tenths slower then with the same build on 3.3... as where on my bigger ships on bigger tracks I'm avg three tenths quicker per lap on 3.5 over 3.3. I need to get these mega lights to preform on 3.5 like I hope they can.

    I’ve learned ff before watching your video. I was hitting a wall and I made a fast correction. The reaction of the quad was way more aggressive of what I expected and almost crashed. Now I’ve learned why. I think I’ll lower them to almost 0.

    Joshua, is there any way to possibly cut into your videos the older video footage and possibly place a fast forward icon to skip or just simply point out the time to skip to to continue the current video? I am only asking this for those of us that either didnt catch the said video or stuck looking for it. You have so much content that sometimes its hard to sift through everything to find what your looking for. This may sound like a super noob thing to stay but it may simplify the content for a lot of your viewers.I hope this isnt too much to ask and if im missing something please feel free to steer me in the right direction. Thanks and as always thanks for everything you do for all of us noob or elite.

  • @DopeJohnny

    With FF how do you tune your PIDs in 3.5? Would you still tune the PIDs for sharp flips? Do you see potential to tune PIDs for minimal propwash oscillations now? Or do you think propwash oscilliations are still mainly tuned with the filters?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 лет назад

      I think now we should tune P and D for best handling including propwash and bounce. Then tune FF for stick feel.

  • @RockTouching

    Fingers crossed 3.5 will fix hot motors on micros like you said. I'd really like to switch from 3.3 for the new features!

    • @Seaweedaids
      @Seaweedaids 6 лет назад +2

      Micros wont get hot motors on 3.4 if you run the same filtering settings. The defaults are more aggressive in 3.4 and 3.5, noisy quads might still need to enable some of the static notches.

      yeah i'm just wanting to keep the quad the same till i build up some skills, i only learned about setpoint weight in april.... flew for a year with no setpoint weight, couldnt figure out why it was so hard to improve, then instantly ten times better pilot when i switched on setpoint, so i'm trying to catch up on some skills before i move on, i am eternally grateful to the betaflight team for all the work they do to get us flying with default settings.

    • @WildpixFPV
      @WildpixFPV 6 лет назад +1

      Go for the 3.5 flash, its stock settings made my quad fly amazingly responsive and tame! And I didn't touch a thing but rates yet.
      You don't have to struggle with every little component, the sum of it all is really well done, the BF guys rock! After flashing it and flying, you can still try different settings step by step. The whole stock settings is working on almost any quad I'd say.

    • @TheMadmacs
      @TheMadmacs 6 лет назад

      'm using the matek f405std which has the 32k gyro, 3.4 had some reservations for 32k, so i will need to wait for somebody else to go first hehe, i do read up on stuff even though i'm far behind, but i only have one quad and it flies quite good, the risks with over heating motors and ''extra'' filtering for 32k, and the changes 3.4 made to setpoints defaults (0.8 now equals 1) and now 3.5 completely renames setpoint as feedforward..... i will wait till somebody orders me to change it. or maybe when i get a second quad together and i can test it without missing any flying time.

    So at first I am interpreting your description of feed forward to be related to the term "acceleration" on hid devices, e.g. mouse sensitivity acceleration. If that interpretation is true I am having a flashback from my thousands and thousands of quake1 & 3 hours between 1998 and like 2012 were I ran both positive and negative acceleration in very fast paced gameplay jumping around the maps. It was wonderful once used to but a problem introduced on the years I used acceleration was that I could not run any other titles even recreationally without playing like it was the first week in front of a computer and it was hard getting back to after just a few weeks off not playing but sitting with the mousepointer in windows. If feed-forward = acceleration, do you think it could possibly introduce somethink alike when switching quads and components?

    You forgot the most exciting change.... Reboot into DFU mode... This means on quads that are so tiny, you have to disassemble to get into DFU mode, you don't have to do that any more. I just updated my firmware recently.. then I saw this. This quad in question is fully built, and super tight. I had to take a piece of wire, and solder it stiff and make a little tiny fork on the end. It took my 30 minutes to finally hit the contacts while working in the quad with a flashlight to get it into DFU mode to flash. Once I connected and saw reboot to DFU mode I smacked my forehead... Well, maybe not the most exciting but it just made my night..

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      Reboot into DFU mode has been a command line option since like 3.0 :-)

    Coat your electronics in silicone modified conformal coating from mg chemicals then you can fly in the rain.
    It works my quads are completely waterproof I even have a video on my channel of my quadcopter going underwater in a pond I lose radio reception but grab it out of the pond after a minute and continue flying.
    Lol the comments about butterflight at the end were pretty funny.
    oh and I bought one of your F4 fc's the 1.3 version it's okay I got used to using the matek f405 AIO with the sensitive gyro running on 32k gyro it actually flies a lot more smooth then your flight controller sorry lol

      silicone conformal coating is designed to be soldered through. at 300ºC it gives way, super easy to solder through, you dont even notice its there. it is however important to mention that you NEED to use it in a well ventilated area because it is toxic and carcinogenic.

    I wish I had access to the data but I don't tho if I had to guess betaflight is SHIPPING on more microquads at this point than full-sized quads as well as replacement FCs. Albert Kim's recent BF v3dot4 roast video showcases 3dot4's serious issues. When we can easily in under 15 seconds toast a $30 motor because of flight software, BF developers should be praised for the attention to the community and 3dot5 IMO is the answer to recent concerns especially in the micro quad area.
