WORLD CHAMPION vs AMATEUR CYCLIST : Interval on the wheel of Remco Evenepoel 🚀

  • How often you have a chance to follow the wheel of #worldchampion 🌈 ? Let me guess - almost 0% chance. But during winter training camps its possible to meet Pro Riders and even ride with them for a few minutes if you have power in legs. Luckily I record almost all my rides on GoPro, so can share this video with you.

The cycling etiquete is to ask someone if you can follow his/her wheel. Good that you reacted after he asked you to stay away, but following someones wheel without even saying helo, agknowledging you are there is not a nice behaviour. BTW Thats some serious power you have there in those legs. Impressed!

True, but also asking to stand back after you tried (expected) and failed to drop someone on an interval isn’t nice either.

I was riding on his wheel during a long easy ride earlier this season, no issues from his side. Probably it's not an arrogance, just doing intervals with all the surges and slowing downs + having someone you don't trust on your wheel? Honestly, most people would have done the same.

I see some comments criticizing Remco here, but he has his reasons. Having a stranger right on your back wheel can sometimes feel equivalent to a tailgater that’s on your rear bumper when your driving. It’s a little unnerving and tests your patience. The amateur rider certainly shows his fitness here and didn’t do anything wrong, but I don’t feel Remco did anything wrong either.

  • @Jan-se1nd

What makes you think this is ok? The pros really, really hate when you do this and they hate how it makes them look arrogant when they have to tell you to stop for your and their safety.
On the surface it's all innocent enough, but it doesn't take that much before it becomes dangerous -- a misjudged turn or sway here or there and it's goodbye classics, Worlds, Vuelta and everything else in that season.
I remember a podcast by Brian Holm where talks about these guys and how they wait outside the riders' hotels when they're on training camps. They'll ride along in the back for the experience, but they have nowhere near the needed bike handling skills and that often puts themsleves and the pros at risk.

it's funny to read about zone 2 for Remko and 5 for Artem, they have a difference of about 1-1.2 wkg, Artem is a strong amateur cyclist and recently was the winner of the Turkish mountain race, his heart rate of 180 is a normal working zone which helps him sit on the wheel while Remko it works, Artem also has an FTP of 5 WKg, which is a lot for an amateur and which 99% of the commentators here don’t have, it’s just ridiculous to read from you about watts and heart rate zones)))

Sometimes I drive quietly, lose motivation, someone overtakes me and I accelerate to drive back there. Just in the wheel, but if I can catch up I will do it again. If you don't want someone to be in your wheel, you just have to drive faster. As a professional cyclist I would just like it if people try to keep my wheel. Let's see how long they can hold out. I will repeat what i said to another poster whining about Evenepoel's gesture to back off:
When two people are having a private/business conversation on the street, you also just go stand next to them, because hey, it's a PUBLIC street? Regardless if those people are actual worldfamous in their line of work. If you can't show the worldchampion the respect to ask if you can hang in his wheel while he's training for his JOB, don't expect respect in return. It's quite a simple concept really. Plus there are plenty of viable reasons for him not to want a stranger on his wheel: An amateur going in the red trying to follow you and draft is more prone to make a mistake, clip wheels and cause a crash. He also doesn't need his power numbers to be made public by proxy, as the OP has now literally done, which is why he doesn't publish his Strava numbers either. Furthermore, he is a worldfamous athlete, plenty of nutjobs on your PUBLIC roads. On top of that, i'm quite certain that even on PUBLIC roads, you need CONSENT to film people, let alone make your recording public! I bet if Evenepoel contacts youtube, he can have this video taken down.

It's just a personal preference to not have someone super close to me. I do understand the road is public so it's everyone's right to cycle/run as close to someone as you want, but Remco also has the right to ask if they could stay away. Artem here very kindly did as asked, I guess out of respect for the world champ and also another humanbeing. Don't see how either side did anything wrong here.
