This song depressed me in the most delightful ways as a lad, and continue to do so today. I remember the first time I heard this song as a young feller', and the lyrics just...struck me. There was something there, something that made me want to take a deeper listen. The moment I got home, I hopped online, looked up the lyrics, and proceeded to listen to it again, and again, and again. I consumed it; consumed every single word, internalized his every point of emphasis and inflection.
This song was life altering, and, even to my young mind, provided so much perspective as to what was the important in life. These simple, yet deep sentiments were ingrained in m fifteen year old mind from that moment forward.
I'm thirty now, and to this very day, this song resonates me. Especially with the amount of loss in my life, now, more than ever, this song rings its truest to me. I can't thank this band enough for all the years of great music, and all the grueling times they've gotten me through. They'll always be one of my favorite bands.
I don't normally go on these long rants in the comments, and if anyone's taken the time to read this, my sincerest apologies, and at the same time, my deepest thanks haha...I've had some rather unfortunate news today, so forgive my reflective, 2 AM rambling in the comments section. Hope the lot of you are having a much better year, and if you're not, just remember: You're not alone, and, eventually, things will get better, so just hang in there.
    Stay Nerdy, friends.

    "Swing Life Away"
Am I loud and clear, or am I breaking up?
Am I still your charm, or am I just bad luck?
Are we getting closer, or are we just getting more lost?
I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars, I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words
We live on front porches and swing life away,
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end,
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand
I've been here so long, I think that it's time to move
The winter's so cold, summer's over too soon
Let's pack our bags and settle down where palm trees grow
I've got some friends, some that I hardly know
But we've had some times, I wouldn't trade for the world
We chase these days down with talks of the places that we will go
We live on front porches and swing life away,
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end,
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand....until you hold my hand
I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars, I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words
We live on front porches and swing life away,
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end,
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand
    Swing life away [x4]

There are so many memories tied to this song that I will never, could never forget and that's exactly why music is so powerful, so profound and even one song by one band can change lives.

I cannot understate how many times I have heard this song. For the time that I was with my daughter we incorporated this song EVERY night. She would sing it, I would sing it, we would listen to it and sometimes sing along. I’ve hardly seen her in four years and I still can hardly listen to my favorite song without breaking down crying. My wife knows Rise is my favorite band; she has treated me to each concert near us since we’ve been together, the best one was on (day of, not near or weekend of) my birthday in Chicago when they toured for Ghost Notes Symphonies. I just wish I could convey to Tim how much this single song after all these years has had such an impact on my life.

"Am I loud and clear or am I breaking up am I still your charm or am I just bad luck" just got a whole new meaning for me. I was 12/13 when I sang along to this and other Rise Against songs but as English is not my first language a lot of meanings got lost in translation for me. Now nearly 20 years later I finally understand the connections and meanings between the words and it's like listening to a whole new song with whole new lyrics but a familiar melody. ❤
Edit: Also I want to grab this opportunity thanking Rise Against and similar bands I listened to through my early middle school years for teaching me a lot of English vocabulary. I always listened to their CDs and paused after some sentences to write down the lyrics and later translating it into my mother tongue. Learnt a lot of vocabulary and expressions through this normal school English wouldn't/couldn't teach.
