Thank you for doing this. I know it's a departure from your usual reaction video, but marching band and drum corps is where the love of music starts for so many of us. My father was a band director and was instrumental in bringing DCI South to Birmingham back in the 80's. So I have grown up in and around marching bands, DCI, parades, etc. my whole life. I've been blessed to participate in so many wonderful events like the Macy's parade, Rose Bowl parade, and countless others. As I sit here watching the Macy's parade today, I'm reminded of so many wonderful memories from my youth. Music is such a powerful medium and comes in so many styles. But it is a universal language that everyone appreciates. Happy Thanksgiving!
your dad helped bring DCI to Birmingham??? That's awesome! So cool to hear all the opportunities you've had in your life! Music truly opens you up to an entirely different world.
Retired band mom here. My oldest was a drummer. At heart. And he was one of the best. Thank you for the memories. The Blue Devils are incredible. We ended up buying our drummer a 10 piece set. It made raising a teen easier because being in marching band is hard work..takes a lot of dedication. 🫶🥁
I love your stories, Jeff! I used to be play trumpet in marching band in HS. I remember on the bus rides for away games, we would play “spat ball” on the bus. We would roll up spat and pitch it to a “batter” who would use a music flip folder as a bat. These hi jinks came to an end suddenly when a spat flew out the window and hit the windshield of the bus behind ours, which the band director happened to be on. We stopped using spats after that game.
As an alum of this corps from 1984 (WAY too many years ago!), they did us old guys proud! BD is definitely the top of the marching arts...has been for years. 21 world titles since the first in 1976. 9 undefeated seasons. Have not placed lower than SECOND since 3rd in 2006. The only placements they've ever taken: 23rd (1974...first trip to DCI nationals, and the only time they did not make Finals), 9th (1974), 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st. The corps to beat EVERY year.
This is a great rabbit hole to go down. Would love to see a reaction to the 2023 Bluecoats. The Blue Devils are always the cleanest on the field and have the best players but I find their shows to be a little on the safe side where the Bluecoats really push the boundaries with their design and music choices. It would be the perfect counterpoint to this show. Really all four top corps had really great shows, all with a very unique style. Might be worth checking out the Boston Crusaders and Carolina Crown as well.
BD shows are deeply layered and often takes multiple watching. We were there for 10 of their shows this past season including Laramie Wyoming and DCI Finals. Every single time we saw and heard something completely different that went unnoticed on previous viewings. They're the all-around total package.
From comments, maybe some folks would like to know BD's repertoire? Tunes from "The Cut Outs" are: Proverb by Steve Reich / The Rise by Dave Glyde / Caves by Cody Fry / Jojo's Bizarre Adventure by Tominaga, Fujibayashi, Tanaka / Stardust Crusaders (Jotaro's Theme) by Yugo Kanno / Resistance by Dave Glyde / Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell / Of Energy by TesseracT / Incident In Jazz by Bob Graettinger / Grand Canyon Fanfare by James Newton Howard... Arrangements by Dave Glyde, John Meehan, Scott Johnson, Brian Dinkel, Wayne Downey, Richard Saucedo, etc.
Yeah, BD is the best around…this show, for those of you who follow closely was not the finals presentation…it was from semis I believe. Actually probably their best performance of the season, so GWFrog must really know their stuff when it comes to drum corps! I’m a big fan of drum corps because there’s so much tradition, in each of the corps and they’ve been competing for many years…some upwards of 80 years +, the amount of talent plus athleticism required to be a part of any DCI corps is off the chart.
I don't know who you are but I am REALLY REALLY grateful you did this--this activity is the biggest UNKNOWN out there because of the lack of huge fan base. It's a VERY VERY VERY limited universe....so seeing someone like you take a look at this is really cool. THANK YOU!
@@larrymccollum5888 First off they received the maximum score, not perfect score. And while they were the first to get a 20 in brass finals night............Blue Devils brass was TECHNICALLY the first when they popped a 20 on Quarterfinals night in 2004, making them the brass line to receive a 20 the earliest in a season.
Re you carrying a concert bass....the bottom bass in a late 70s-mid 80s bass line was usually a beast of 40"....so your experience was not unique, BTW,,,you mentioned Zappa in passing. Enchida's Arf (of you) was their 1987 percussion feature.
I'd prefer crown or carmels symphonic sound. But Hebron does have PHENOMENAL music. When they get their visuals top notch they'll probs take a national title one day. Hopefully soon.

When you said Tri-toms, I knew you're one of us. Thanks for looking at this.
Hahaha yes 👏👏👏🫶
I saw this live at Indianapolis finals. They truly are the best of the best, especially this year’s show. 💙
Good ear! The ballad is that Joni Mitchell tune, Both Sides Now. They tend to bring back some gems 😁

I saw the Blue Devils perform long ago. It was spectacular!

Based 😇
@@gunner-qf9eh “Based” means I agree with him!
And...you need to see a live show. Will blow you away.
I can't believe they did a TesseracT song this show. Progressive metal being in a DCI show is wild.
been. you just need to check out previous decades.
Loved this!

You should definitely check out Bluecoats 2023 because the use of various sounds and especially from the ballad movement to the end is all amazing
The song you were wondering about was “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell
That’s it! 👏👏👏🫶
Hope you react to more corps like Carolina Crown or Bluecoats!
Bugle 😉
Hahahaha omg it took this long for someone to either notice or say something 😂🤣😂 thank you!

Agreed. I highly recommend 2023. They received a PERFECT brass score! That's a first for any corp EVER.

@ssebassstiannn For high school standards, Hebron is amazing.
Hebron 2021 - the most amazingly difficult music book I've ever seen/heard a high school band play on the field.
