Tourette's and My Golf Game | Making a Major Change

  • I finally decided and thought of a way to try and make this change in my golf game. Not a swing change or anything mechanical, but instead an adjustment to my pre-shot routine that I believe, if effective, will greatly help my golf game. Hope you enjoy and thank you for watching!

Bubbie, never doubt, you are a great man!
Not only are you being open about something that a lot of people have trouble being open about but, you aren't just using it as a method of getting views, or getting sympathy or anything like that. You are trying to help yourself and others thru your experiences.
Also, instead of living like there is nothing you can do, you are trying to find solutions. You're a boss, bro!
*BTW* don't let Grant see you doing range training without an alignment stick!!

Once you plant your feet and have your alignment, try doing small and slow club waggles. It looks like once your body starts moving, you can control it. But once you pause prior to your swing, it looks like the ticks kick in again. Basically don’t stop moving til you’ve completed your swing.

    Bubble,
You are an inspiration. I started playing golf in 1976, when I was 10. In 1986, age 17, I was hit with Young Onset Parkinsons Disease and now 36 years later I am 53 and still fighting Parkinsons as well as playing golf. Although I don't have any distance from the tee, I still play and love the game. So keep fighting through the ticks and keep inspiring all you come in contact with. Love your Instagram too.
    Be cool Bro

The sheer will you have to minimize certain aspects of Tourette’s is huge and I have so much respect for that. The strategy that you came up with is really smart. That’s got me thinking if golfers should implement a system to help improve their scoring average and overall mechanics.

I have similar tics so what I do is when I get over the ball, I take a deep breath and relax everything then exhale slowly and as you finish exhaling swing. Hope this helps

Bubbie, love the videos. A friend of mine has Tourette’s, and if he needs to concentrate on something, he will sort of sing or hum a tune lightly to himself while he is doing whatever he is doing that needs concentration. I have seen elsewhere that singing is well know to suppress tics. I’m not sure if it would work for you with your golf swing, but I just thought I’d let you know about it. Keep up the great vids. You are an inspiration to me and many others.

Bubby I've got a problem over the ball. Sometimes I go to hit the ball and I stop. I put my club right behind it and go to swing but I stop before my club leaves the ground. It's in my head it's not right even though it is. And also I've got tremors and struggle to tee the ball up. I'm going to try this on my iron shots. One other thing, don't stress about getting to each number at the same time, especially on different clubs. (If that makes sense). Like it might take a little longer to get to step 2 on some swings and that's all good. Just use the numbers as a point of reference on where your at and not a problem of where you might not be at yet..

I have an idea for you Bubbie: When standing behind the ball and looking down the line at your target, pick out a spot or divot, or a dent in the grass somewhere in front of the golf ball on the line and as close to the ball as possible. Then walk up and address the ball, look at the target ONCE, then look down at your spot and let that be ONE, set your body (or tuck & tuck your sleeve) TWO, start the backswing THREE, and let it go FOUR. You will then hit the target line and all your movements will be smooth and stable, resulting in much more success. Because you've already calculated the distance and target line, so the mind is freed up to just go.

I have a friend who I play with and is a single digit handicapper. He plays a lot and is usually pretty quick to set up and hit. I hadn't played with him in a few weeks and he had all of a sudden gotten the yips with short putts inside of like 5 feet. He literally sat there for 30 to 45 seconds looking like he was going to swing but just couldn't. It was tough to watch, not because I was in a hurry, but I just wanted him to be able to clear his head and go for it. I know it's a completely different situation, but it happens to the best of us. Just gotta deal with it and play the best you can til you figure it out, I guess. Bubbie is the man for being so public to try and help others who may deal with similar situations.

I think you are on to something. There was a country singer named Mel Tillis that had a fairly bad stuttering problem when he was talking normally. But he found that when he had the structure of the rhythm of the song and knew what he was going to sing - he could sing perfectly, with no stuttering. This also touches on Focal Dystonia, also known as "the yips" - the best way to battle Dystonia is to give the brain some new and different inputs - this is why there are so many alternate putting grips (left hand low, split grip, long putter, the claw, etc.).

I’m thinking, most of us run through the process the same as you, however your tics make you stall out quick. Try this, set up, sleeve in the pit, look down range, and then wait to get those tics out. Don’t start your count until after you’ve already gripped and brought the front foot forward. Look down range #1, Back to ball #2, start your back swing #3, make #4 contact and follow through. I understand your frustrations, and I can see you’re not only frustrated with yourself, but I think you worry to much about the playing partners giving you crap for taking so long, and then exacerbates more tics on the next shot. The Good Good maniacs love you, and accept you for being you, tics and all. If you are having a bad tics day, joke about it (I’m sure you do) and with those maniacs surrounding you, show them you are doing this for them as much as you. You know they understand or you wouldn’t have been asked to be apart of the greatest golf content on RUclips. Keep up the grind and the positive mental attitude, and hope to see you speed up your routine for your own relief. As viewers, and loyalists to the GG and All the solo projects, we don’t see it anyway because it gets cut in editing. Get Some T-Bubbie!

Seems like the ticks are at the beginning of the count. Wonder if you should set your hands before you walk in and start your count from behind the ball. Maybe 2 sets of 4 counts (since counting to 5 or 6 might be odd).
Both hands on the club then walk in to set behind the ball and just keep repeating 1-4 count before the walk in. Just a thought, no idea what your dealing with. Assume it's like having too many swing thoughts and having trouble starting the swing until you review them in your mind first.

Tempo looks a little fast taking the club back, just try taking it back a little slower and see if it helps with ball flight and direction.

How do the boys react to your ticks and wait? Would love to see some clips of them, supporting or addressing it?
