Quick reminder we recorded this last week before the point changes. Nothing WILD changed in these lists (Space Marines is now even harder to get to 2k, etc) but technically all Brad's exact numbers are off a bit either direction for points values starting next week. There's also some minor editing errors sprinkled throughout, but it's still a miracle there was time for this to get made in the first place. Please give our editor a round of applause for jamming this out over what was meant to be a break period!
If you want to do 2000 points every time for $500 USD? Deathwing Terminator Army, Belial and 40 Terminators will set you back $509 ($60 a box and $29 for Belial). Technically you don't need the extra 5 terminators (or Belial). You can also do whatever loadouts you want, make all the characters. Make Belial & a Strikemaster I believe they're called now. You can just get 8 boxes for $480 USD then just convert Belial and the other terminators out of the models. 6x basic 5 man deathwing squads, with loadouts of your choice (or Knights as they're more expensive points wise). Then a 5 man command squad. Leaves you 5 terminators to make into an Apothecary, Champion, Ancient, and Belial + Strikemaster. Which will easily set you 2000-2100 points even with the points drops from the recent update they will do. It's also not bad play wise as well as entire army is wound on 4+ only. Deep Strike re-rolls to hit, all 2+ 5++, objective secured, and some other nonsense Dark Angels get as base rules. Shame you guys missed them as it's the best way to price Marines to get to 2k. Benefit is you don't HAVE to paint them bone as there are the easier to paint successor chapters too, and you have a low model count army of 41 models with quite a bit of poseable potential and uniqueness between each model as you can use the knight pieces to spice up some of the more basic terminators. With plenty of heavy weapon variant and being Deathwing can mix/match close combat and shooting squads in one. Vanguard Detachment, take the Deathwing Strikeforce bonus so you get +3 CP as well. So at 2k games you get 15 CP before you start buying relics etc. My only main gripe is that you can't get terminator chaplains on the website still as GW removed the old metal/resin one and they only released a limited edition one a few years back which is crazy expensive on the 2nd hand market. As DA's have special terminator chaplains which makes a great secondary HQ to Belial.
It’s unlikely you’ll see this but your wrong regarding death guard. 9 myphitic blight-haulers ($27*9) 3 blightlord terminator squads ($60*3) and Chosen of Mortarion ($65) is 2010pts on the table so long as you kit the Blightlord terminator to max and use the deathguard ‘champion’ as a deathguard chaos lord you have an army for $488! Using the MUNITORUM FIELD MANUAL 2022 MK II point values.
@@Zabzim I think 9 Blight-haulers is a bit much for me to not have it violate the Impulsor rule, but I'm still extremely impressed. I'll call that a win for DG.
@@thepoorhammerpodcast I understand your hesitation regarding MBH because no one actually uses them not since 9th Death Guard codex but if you can remember back in the beginning of 9th at 100pts each MBH were completely broken which is why GW dropped a an exterminatos level nerf on them upping their points to 140pts each but we have finally come full circle and they are back to 110pts now (which is what they should have been from the beginning) and with Arks of Omen changes I expect we might see a lot of mechanised imperial guard armies in which case we MBH will be very much needed not least because Belching Fumes Stratagem makes them extremely difficult to shifted (that’s the one that reduces the number all range attacks against them by 1).
When my friends convinced me to start Warhammer they told me it would be around $500 bucks to build a decent army. They forgot to mention that some armies are going to be a little more expensive than others. Glory to the Omnissiah.
Honestly, checkout the alternative model from stationforge (the scavanger) its one part with GW model, and you can have pack as cheap as 1€ per miniature, 2€ for elite 3 to 8 for HQ and heroes.. 15 to 20 bucks vehicles and even 50 bucks knights Sure you won't be welcomed in official tournament I guess 🤷♂️
I used to have a friend a couple years back who had a collection of Rhino's. He literally just went around conventions and clubs asking for Rhino's, usually got at least one or two. Also got some online by just asking guys who sold used Warhammer. "Hey, i saw your listing for bikes, do you have any spare Rhino's i can just have?" What did he do with these you ask? He built Ork terrain solely out of Rhino parts. I want to say that there were 19 or 20 Rhino's worth ripped apart and chopped up, it was probably more. Everyone he showed it to loved it. Pretty much all terrain pieces on the table were primarily Rhino panels, tracks, stacked gun walls... And that's not even counting the shredded Rhino's he put on pretty much every model he had. EDIT: And yes, half his army was Ork-converted Rhino's. I knew that Rhino's were easy to come by, sure, but literally throwing them on a pile in the corner of your room is a level of stupid i had not considered possible. In total i think he spent some 50$ on the lot of them. I have no idea where that obsession came from. He became known as the Rhino king, absolute shit-tier meme, but it was _glorious._ TL;DR: No seriously don't pay for Rhino's, go to any gathering of Warhammer players, and just ask. 50% chance you'll go home with a Rhino, if not contact info for your local Rhino dealer.
I remember eons ago that White Dwarf had a challenge where four of the staff had to collect Warhammer Fantasy armies with what was the equivelant of average Kid's Allowance (pocket money in the UK) over the course several months. Long gone are those halycon days where a year's worth of a kid's pocket money would get you a decent army and paints.
I member! One of them played beast men. I had a subscription and kept going back to my local store to buy old back issues. The employees were like you want to go threw these boxes and collect these? Sure kid go crazy! I found all my back issues in the garage. The Armageddon issues are beat up.
@@the_lichemaster I also got £5 a week, this was from me being about 5 (2006) up to me being 16 (2017) where it stopped, outside of going out with my mates to buy some stuff once every few months the £5 a week got me very little by the end but at the start it was good.
Bit of a late comment, but in the old days of 7th you could make a battle company if you did this every unit that could take a rhino or razorback as a dedicated transport could get one for 0 points
you can do most armies if you build carefully e.g. wraith eldar is very cheap, warglaive knights etc. you just have to do a lot more back ground (making a large spreadsheet)
You missed Tau: $80 a box means you can get 6 boxes, as a Vanguard detachment you can have the drones be 18 shield and 18 marker/gun (450 for drones) and then either 1 Crisis Commander + 17 Crisis (5/6/6) or go Farsight Enclave for double Commander and 16 Suits (5/5/6), if all geared as Fusion/Missile/Plasma you only need to include 1 Signature System and have the suits take Shield Gen to get 2000pt. 18 Suits isn’t optimised, but it also is completely valid playable build.
Wish someone told me this when I started Tau, lol. I wanted to do a mostly mech army and have ended up with what feels like infinite firecaste with railguns.
@@gstellar96 I just looked into the prices, your right, where the fuck is he getting Tau for 80 bucks, even with the biggest discount I could find it was over 100
@@SatinFoxx I don't think my man is running Combat Patrols. He's running literally just Crisis teams. 6 drones in a box, 3 suits. So 6 boxes you can get 36 drones and 18 suits.
@@SatinFoxx Not Combat Patrols, just the regular Crisis suit boxes, heck you can go 5 boxes of Crisis and 2 boxes of regular Kroot so you have 3 x 10 Kroot squads and then it’s better balance for doing actions and the likes.
The main reason it used to be 0.99 in stores was so that the till would have to be activated to get change out, this would ring the till and let the store owner know when its been opened...the staff couldn't just pocket the money
"You can get most armies under 500$ if you live in the uk you just can't get electricity" fucking savage dude XD that right there at the end earned you my sub!
@@adventurekobold energy bills in the UK have almost doubled over the last year and due to get worse. Last year the average household could have bought like 12 combat patrols and with their gas bill and still be paying less than this year.
This video inspired me to start a cheap custodes army to try out. Almost a year later Ive got a huge custodes army, with more models on their way, and cant wait to finish painting them. Thank you for showing me the cheap life (even if they are terrible at the moment)
I'm halfway through printing an "imperial guard" army and it's delightful. I've still spent like $200 (AUD) on resin & STLs, but that's including fail-prints and 3d models I bought because they were cool and then haven't ended up using.
We'll be covering our love of 3D prints semi-regularly I'm sure. The biggest problem is figuring out how to present it in video since we don't even own cameras other than our phones.
A friend of mine has a 3-D printer and now we're both playing 40K. I like the nights he likes the necrons looks like we could have almost bought in. But $500 each is a lot to start for again I think
I'm new to the 50k universe and the prices sound silly. That's crazy ppl even buy this stuff, it encourages GW to charge even more. If I were to start collecting I'd just 3D print that shit.
@@akaroth7542 isn't Battletech super relaxed with tokens as well? Like "this coke can is an Annihilator stand-in and this British cab Model is representing a Mantichore" relaxed?
@@l0rf Pretty much yeah, it's even baked into the rules. But if you've got 500 USD to burn, then the average force pack that costs 25 times less can get you what amounts to a pre-built "army" ready to use right out of the box. Seriously, how many non-historical wargames can you actually jump into for anywhere between $20-35 USD? Actually, now that I think about it... even if you bought every unique force pack currently out (not counting the Mercenary packs) you would still have almost $100 (out of those previously mentioned $500) still left over and approximately 19-21 unique "armies" worth of mechs.
@@l0rf you literally only need the rules. Plus you can layer on additional rulesets aside from Mechs. You can add in vehicles of several types, infantry, battle-armored infantry, vtols, aircraft, and even spacecraft.
I'm in the UK (no power cuts so far :p) just had a look online for that Custodes list, all new from an online retailer with discount. Minus the Rhino the whole lot costs £230 which in freedom money is about $275. That gives a pretty large amount to spend on candles and batteries for flashlights. I'm so damn tempted to buy it as my first army. EDIT interestingly the Grey Knights list x3 CP box is almost exactly the same £229.50 on the same store
This being *american* MSRP really changes the outcome here. With the MSRP in Norway i was able to get a guard list built for just under 500 dollars. It wasn't even just an armoured one. Using two Cadian Combat Patrol and two Scions Start Collecting with two Russes (One as a TC), a deathstrike, and one additional Sentinel, i was able to get over 2k points. I did try and see if i could use the fact that buying the Commisar set from FW is cheaper than buying three separate plastic ones but getting two from the Scions boxes made it unnecessary, however it would have been incredibly funny to have FW be what comes in clutch to get this list built for under 500.
@@Brigtzen there is a Warhammer store is Oslo. Additionally Outland has several physical locations in some major cities where Warhammer models are sold. Lastly GameZone is a digital storefront which sells a variety of kits. As for import fees it's just GWs shipping you need to pay for, if you get toll fee, just take a picture of the receipt and Email GW about it and they will refund you for it.
As a T’au player this has piqued my interest in grey knights, it might be cool to go from an army that only plays in two phases of the game (mostly) to one that plays all 4x
It's a fun swap. You get a bit more melee interaction, and psychic buffs are a fun addition. It just takes a bit of practice to get all the rules down. I use different color flash cards to remind me what I'm doing with psychic or melee
Daemons actually can get there pretty easily if you're willing to spam Slaanesh chariots. Which maybe is a little unorthodox, but seems like a lot of fun. One Khorne combat patrol, three Slaanesh daemons start collecting, two 120mm oval bases, and one Syll'Esske costs $499.40 MSRP, and gives you 2130 points pre-AoO changes, and 2010 points post-AoO, and fits in a legal list. Actually seems like a decent list too tbh, especially for contesting objectives.
@@benfisher961 yes and no. AoS has different armies for each chaos god, and while you can have ally from another army, it can never reach more than 25% of your unit count. So you can play demons in both settings, but it's better doing so coming from AoS since you already have a headstart on building your 40k army.
It definitely isn't this bad if you collect them over time. Get one box on a sale, and by the time you assemble and paint it, order the next one you want. I was able to split a starter box with a friend, that's a good affordable way to try it out and see if you'd be into it or not
Don't listen to the other 2 above me- that will also make you lose money, just get a 3d printer and call it a day. Entire armies will cost you 100$ for the resin and you will save QUITE the headache since all of these models are unpainted- so not alot would change if you bought the unpainted models or the 3d printer.
Except it will be your new full-time profession perfecting running your 3-D printer sourcing files supporting files and removing thousands and thousands of islands through thousands and thousands and thousands of frames… and removing them one by one. I have three 3-D printers and have been into the hobby for 3 years now and if you value your time at even a nickel an hour you can pay for the Warhammer armies and save untold amounts of time. Then again learning to assemble models and remove their imperfections, fill gap drill, gun barrels, and paint them to an acceptable level is a whole other profession on its own. Because I am insane I recommend doing both like me!
My biggest tip, is if you're modelling-inclined, is to try your hand at scratch building your own vehicles. It's not for everyone, but it's possible (especially with using papercraft as your starting templates). I have a couple dozen tanks that (in materials cost), hit maybe the $200-250 mark. In GW plastic that would easily run you closer to the $1k range. For your models, honestly just find someone with a resin printer, a sheet or two of n/fep film, and ask/offer to buy a couple bottles of resin and a case of beer or something. I know that'd get me saying "yeah sure". Keep in mind that the nfep is the "consumable" part that'll need replacing, as well as a few dozen figures taking a up to a litre to print, along with the effort of washing/curing everything for you. Basically, mind your manners. A bottle of resin, a sheet or two of nfep (ask what they use first), and a case of beer is going to cost you maybe $100. In turn, you're not spending upwards of $500+ on those same miniatures. Do put some of those savings into a good foam case for the things though, resin tends to be brittle, and thin stuff loves snapping.
Before I looked at the Codex, I randomly picked up a box of Reivers because the kit looked cool and Space Marine units are basically interchangeable, right..?
The pricing is what has mostly kept me out of buying a Imperial Guard Army recently. It still kinda expensive when I was a kid in 2008… but it’s much worse now. I can get metal miniatures from other companies for much cheaper than GWs plastics.
The secret ingredient is Proxy models. I haven't met anyone who actually cares that I use proxy models for my guard, I can spend over $600 for 120 Guardsmen or I can spend $120 for 120 from War games Atlantic.
My daemonettes from 3rd edition re-sell for more than I bought them for. Obviously this isn't the case for every model, but it's a collectable game and you can re-sell.
Another thing that wasn't brought up but is something I have discussed with my playgroup after I bought one. The gladiator kit is literally an impulsor kit with extra bits to make the gladiator parts and it's only like five bucks more or something then the impulsor and it's just like an extra sprue or two tossed in the box. 80$ vs 85$ as of now. If half of these boxes just gave you a gladiator kit in there so a second could be made as that rather than an impulsor it would be so much better. Really I think it should be like the rhino / razorback where they just quit making the impulsor and only make the gladiator as a dual kit.
We had a 15 minute discussion during the editing phase when the editor asked about using the Impulsor to build other vehicles. I expect we'll be making a video about "lifehacks" for buying models without wasting money inefficiently at some point soon. There's a couple other things I thought about that I take for granted with my knowledge that casual newer players/modellers may not know without research.
@@thepoorhammerpodcast It's more for Heresy but fairly sure you can probably just stick an empty paint pot to the front of a Land Raider Spartan and call it a Typhon. The plastic Typhon will probs retail for about the same as a Spartan anyway, BUT because of the Age Of Darkness boxed set there's brand new Spartans on ebay for like, £40.
As someone who enjoys Warhammer as a franchise but not a tabletop game (I just haven’t tried it) it is wonderful to get a gauge on pricing! Great video.
I've taken this video as a personal kitbashing / proxy challenge when it comes to starting my second army (Craftworld Eldar). Lots of corsairs from the boarding patrol will be turned into poorhammer aspect warriors. It's going to be great.
57:52 Actually Genestealer Cults CAN just barely be done, until the points changes that are about to come out anyways. 2x combat patrol, 1x broodcoven, and 2x aberrants gives you 1996 points with I think 50$ to spare. (this would require you to take three patrol detachments to use all three magus, but you could buy almost anything with the spare 50$ to get around that, like an abominant to buff your 20 aberrants) Edit: I forgot about the proficient planning upgrades which gives you more wiggle room for options like replacing some of the aberrants with genestealers.
Reminder everyone: This is USD MSRP, if you're in Europe the equivalent budget is MUCH easier and way more armies are doable (your exact currency depending) Edit: The CSM one was Shadowspear Monopose so it loses some value unless you want those exact loadouts.
Yeah thanks for this comment, I live in the EU and was thinking ... I am sure I can make more armies work than shown here. A bit sad that prices for GW vary according to where you live. I guess if you live in New Zealand or Australia then you can build no armies for 500$ MSRP ;)
The current CSM one is not Shadowspear, Shadowspear was the Start Collecting and was actually far better than the Combat Patrol. It had something like 700-800 points in it already, absolutely insane value for what it was.
Yeah i live in Norway where 40k is even cheaper than UK, like, cheap enough that i dont really feel bad building a krieg guard army at MSRP, and i was kinda suprised that so few armies made it in here before i remembered how expensive US prices are.
I'm a newbie and watched this episode like 5 times. Very entertaining. Please keep it up. For Cavill boomers, might be a good idea to have - Cheapest (while fairly good list) 2000 pts for each faction - How good can each faction gets with 2x combat patrol++
When i got into 40k i bought the admech combat patrol and the guy at the store told me that it basicly was an army i could start playing games with. I love all the units in the box, but i needed a few more for it to even count as 500 points.
I live in New Zealand (And for context, in store warhammer prices here are the worst in the world, it’s marked up by like 50% it’s disgusting) and watching this video reminded me that my 1000 point F tier dumpster fire list, is more expensive money wise than most 2000 point lists in other countries. Amazing video though, interesting as all hell and a great watch.
I really feel sorry for you guys! Check out the prices in Poland, most combat Patrols cost around 350 PLN there, which is 125 NZ$. Since Poland has 23% Vat and NZ only 15% it'll be between 115 and 120 NZ$. I would suggest to NZ that you leave the commonwealth and join the EU for gaming purposes.
this video is genuinely useful to me, i've been wanting to get both a custodes army and a grey knights army. this video thought me more or less how im gonna do so. thank you.
Nice one! Comment for the comment throne (algorithm). I find it quite ridiculous that the elite factions are the cheapest, but it makes sense since they have fewer units for more points, still a bit bonkers in terms of immersion.
This video really put some stuff in perspective. You would think that more people would play Custodes and Grey Knights since you get more points per buck, but the lore really sells the minis for you.
If I spend 500 dollars, I don't mind spending 600 dollars on army I like instead of one being forced into. So custodians fall off. I actually like grey knights but being heavy psycher feels intimidating. So people end up on their 3d choice I guess
I still remember when I started first collecting warhammer, you got a Space Marine Squad made of Zin for around 10 "Deutsche Mark" which translates to , if you believe the German government, to 5 Euros or if you believe your bank account and the prices in stores the day after the change, 20 Euros.
Amazing video. Only thing I would note is that they didn't forget the blood throne in the demons combat patrol. The unit on foot has a different sculpt to the one that rides the vehicle, probably because the blood throne still hasn't been updated, while the one on foot is fairly new. They're two different sprues.
Hello! I watched this video and loved it! I am a ork player and there is a way to hit 2k in only 410 MSRP from the Warhammer store. The list is stupid but still playable and totals 2020 points. 2 Stompas, being $130 for 705 points each, then the ork combat patrol which allows for that final 600 points. With the extra $90 you can get any ork kit really and also be able to run an Arks of Omen
25:27 ...wait....you guys are from new hampshire?! I thought i was the only one here. It always feels so surreal whenever someone on the internet mentions this forgotten state.
First time watcher. Made me laugh out loud and made my wife ask me what I was watching, so I got to relay some 40k humor. I don’t play but I’ve lived the game world and idea since Rogue Trader, when I did play on squad level. Commenting to help the algorithm. You guys are fun and very helpful… I won’t be playing 40k at these price points. For 500 bucks I can get that new Jammie portable guitar and learn to djent again. But I’ll watch your content and drool over armies I won’t spend that kind of money on. Huzzah! Keep up the good work.
So I have a few comments because personally I thought the count of armies would be higher until Ive seen some of the US prices. Not too long ago I started Chaos Knights and I got there with 400... Euro. Some of the pricing is pretty insane. The Votann stuff really caught me off-guard. Like 80$ sagitarius which is a 50€ kit, all the elite options being 60$ MSRP. Even after conversion you pay like 25% on top of everything. And at least here in germany it is pretty common to get like 10% discount on things. 8 Baby Knights and 2 Big Knights which is far more Points, if ordered through an online-retail LGS is 440€ - Free shipping - Tax included. Your Grey Knights Buylist is straight up 400€ MSRP, after conversion 428$
Yeah USD conversion on prices and obviously shipping and tax and tariffs and stuff they definitely use to squeeze out a lot of extra money too than just covering those costs. If you want to have a real heart attack look at New Zealand and Australia prices those are just criminal.
@@xanderlaskey2753 This is true but if you just say 'buy a 3D printer' then that invalidates the point of this whole video. Besides, some people don't want to go through all of the hassle with supporting models, slicing them and then praying that your prints don't fail for a year until you get it right. They're missing out - I saved £30 on a squad of rubrics last week by printing some free files - but it is definitely a hassle
@5:15 "Owning two Impulsors kinda sucks." Me, assembling my second Impulsor while listening to the video: *surprised Pikachu face * ...That's not a joke, either. That's literally what I'm doing right now. I bought one of those Combat Patrol boxes for myself, and someone else got me one for Christmas. The plus side is I got extra Suppressors and Eliminators out of the deal, so I wasn't too broken up about it.
@@Edude117 It actually worked out pretty well. I was rushing to finish the thing so I could fight a rematch against my cousin's Tzeenchian Daemons earlier today. I got roflstomped last time when he focused on wiping out my melee specialists in his first couple of psychic phases before they could do much. Since they ignore AP, Daemons are stupid hard to take down at range, so he wound up tabling me in the fourth round. It didn't help that we were playing by the now-outdated rules that allowed his Flamers to auto-hit all their attacks. Anyway, I put those Impulsors together so I could load the two of them up with 9 Bladeguard, 1 Primaris Captain, 1 Primaris Chaplain and a Judiciar. Second round, I unloaded them all right into his Lord of Change's face and brought the bird down in one charge. Then they gave his Pink Horrors the murder-blender treatment. My White Consuls took righteous vengeance for their earlier defeat, and it was glorious!
First off, nothing wrong with 2 Impulsors. They cost a bit too many points but w/e, so does the entire Astartes army. Mostly people just hate it because it's not the Rhino, it's replacing the Rhino, and Primaris units arbitrarily can't ride in the Rhino. The concept and execution of a 'hover-Rhino' is just fine. Second, the meta massively changes like 4+ times a year and everything inevitably becomes good for a while. Eventually Impulsors will get buffed and be viable, and all the people who bitched and moaned about it will look real stupid as they get caught red-handed buying their 2nd or 3rd or 4th Impulsor kit. Third, hover vehicles are cool. Anyone who disagrees? Fuck'em. ;D
After some quick noodling, I was able to get Ynnari to 1820 Points for exactly $500 MSRP and Aeldari to 1945 points for $495USD. For Ynnari if you spend $320 on the Aeldari and Drukhari Combat Patrols, $40 on Yvraine and $55 on The Yncarne, $40 on a Voidreaver and $45 on a Warwalker. You have to build/kitbash the Farseer as Eldrad Ulthran, your Archon as Prince Yriel or The Visarch or someone else more point heavy than an Archon, and you have to make an extra Kaballite Warrior squad off the models you get with the boats - but you get pretty close. It's not an amazing list, but it's pretty close to 2000 points, and it feels like it'd synergize well enough with The Yncarne. If $500 was the budget and you were able to use eBay or Amazon and get the discounts, you could easily save the $30-50 needed to buy Wraithguard or Wraithblades to get it to almost exactly 2000 points at $500USD For Aeldari, it's a bit tricky. You get Yncarne for $55, and then you get 2 Combat Patrols and 2 Squads of Wraithguard for 380 Points for $120. Build one Combat Patrol normal except you make the Farseer into Eldrad Ulthran, and on the other Patrol, you turn your 4th squad of 3 Windriders into 1 Farseer Skyrunner, a Warlock Skyrunner, and a Voidreaver using the spare pieces you get from the rest of the combat patrols (Guardian Squads are great for kitbashing, and all these jetbikes are the same base model). You end up with 9 Windriders, but that's the worst thing, the rest of it is pretty unrepetitive, especially since Guardians can be built two ways, Wraithlords can be built differently (or have 1 be a Wraithseer), and you get a fair amount of commanders, infantry, and vehicles
I've been on a Warhammer kick lately and this video dropped into my recommended feed. It's a lot of fun, I appreciated the insight into army-building--both figurative (gathering workable units for an army) and literal (the actual "build a model kit" part). I've always heard that Warhammer's prices are nuts and its disheartening to see the math in cold, hard numbers. But also, I can see why people are so passionate about this. You guys are alright.
thing is, in the uk knights cost £105 (about $110 ), and wardogs/armigers cost £55 (about $60), so it could probably be done over here edit: also 10nth ed rules mean 1 knight can be 500pts and that can be done 4 times if you only want the big bois
Thanks to this video and a few others of yours, I finally went to a local hobby shop, and paid MSRP for a Rhino. I'm just kidding guys. Put down your guns. But I did go to the shop, and I bought the introduction kit, with snips, brush, 5 paints, 5 space marines, 11/12 tyranids, a rulebook, a map placemat, and a few cardboard prop-ups. It was 64.99, MSRP (sue me.) And I'm so happy I have invested. I want to go with either Custodes, knights, or Grey Knights now for my army. I'm so happy I found you guys. Truly a blessing from the emperor. I appreciate all you do, your information has been so insightful, and your QnA's are so thorough. I can listen for hours. Blood for the blood gods, skulls for the skull throne. Huzzah brothers.
Great stuff, would be good to see this done again almost a year later. Hadn’t realised the US prices were so much higher as I’m in the UK- don’t remember any of these apparent rolling blackouts though 😂
I decided to take a look at this challenge & use the Age of Darkness box from Heresy as a starting point. You can get there pretty cleanly with that box, the only real issue is that the Spartan isn't very good. I'd argue that it's serviceable, but still not great. I made two lists, a shooty one, and a melee list. Neither one will win you a tournament, but they'll be an okay 2000pts to bring to game night. I decided to go all firstborn, for the flavor of the list, but your could do some tweaks to it to add the newer (and admittedly somewhat better in game) Primaris stuff. The shooting list has got a fair number of bodies, the drop pods & Spartan give you a bit of board control/mobility, and good damage with loads of multi-melta & lascannon shots. I got it to 2000pts, and still had plenty of Tactical Marine bodies unused. My shopping list was: Age of Darkness Box - $299 Heavy Weapons Upgrade Set - Heavy Flamers, Multi-meltas, Plasma Cannons - $42 (this is mostly just for the Multi-Meltas to make Devastators) Contemptor Dreadnought - $60 Drop Pod - $50 Techmarine with Servitors -$47 Total - $498 For the melee list, we're going with Blood Angels, mostly because I love them, but also because Death Company Marines are in a box of 5 for $42. Its fast & the Sanguinary Priest helps with early damage, and can extend the lifespan of your terminators. There's less shooting, but the Spartan & Contemptor aren't totally ignorable for most armies & you get a fair number of Inferno Pistols in these boxes as well. Once you're in melee, you should have plenty of thunder hammers & power fists to work with. After building your VanVets & Death Company, you'll have enough leftover chainswords & bolt pistols to make some assault marines. The Shopping list was: Age of Darkness Box - $299 Sanguinary Priest - $35 Vanguard Veteran Squad - $55 Death Company x2 - $84 Space Marine Jump Packs x3 - $26.25 (you'll put 3 of these on your characters, the rest go to assault marines) Total - $499.25 I think there's probably some Terminator heavy lists, not using the AoD box, that you could also build around the Horus Heresy Terminator which alone are about 3.9 points per dollar.
You could improve the shooty list by cutting the drop pod, replacing the techmarine with a primaris techmarine, and getting another contemptor. I had forgotten about how Strategic Reserves have changed, so the drop pod is less necessary. Also of note, you could make a non-Blood Angels assault list by cutting the Sanguinary Priest & Death Company, and going up 2 more boxes of Vanguard Vets & 1 more pack of Jump Packs & still be within the budget
Got into WH back in 87, never had money for models so we used counters we printed on a plotter. When I finally bought a real 2000 pt Tzeentch demon army, I remember it was less than $200 for the whole thing in the late 90s. Yes it was very few models, and yes $200 could just buy more back then, and it was a surprisingly competitive army.
All of them, if you write down the unit’s names on little paper squares instead of using figurines Most of them, if you get a bunch of green army men to act as your figurines and spray-paint them different colors for different factions
Honestly surprised that knights didn’t make it I thought itd be there but eh at least it’s a big close. On a side note yeah whoever priced LoV vehicles should be beaten with a few lead clubs for making the Sagitaur like $65 for a kit that contains only 1 Sagitaur

Love this - reminds me of a childhood spent with Warhammer armies: Lizardmen, working out what the most cheap units points/£ were. Though as a salty Brit I'll just sit here sipping my tea with my free healthcare, longer life expectancy, and cheaper Warhammer 😉
Lizardmen has to be the cheapest WHFB army right? There are tons of them floating around from that starter set. Like 3x20 skinks, and 2x20 saurus with 1x20 temple guards. As well as sauruses painted to be Saurus Old blood lord, a couple of skink priests and a saurus banner bearer. Full magic items. Magical banners for temple guard and bsb. Clocks in at around 2000 pts, and can be had for very cheap. Other option is still a 6th starter Empire, which with a decent lord and a few cannons can be pumped to close to 2000 pts. Honorable mention to Ogres, for 3x6 bulls, some shootas and full hero contingent can be had for 100, 150? Pounds over at troll trader.
Nice bit of background while painting a grey knight! Nice coincidence that they came up specifically. Earned a new sub Also Im british so this has been delivered to the town computer with carrier pigeon
The UK bashing aside, this was very good. I didn't even realise we were having blackouts. Maybe the US knows something we missed? I'm just getting back into 40k after years, and man, I didn't realise how expensive it all was.
i dont know anything about warhammer, dont really care about warhammer, and probably will never purchase anything warhammer - but this video was incredibly entertaining.
As a veteran of 40k of twenty years and spent thousands of dollars on this hobby, here are my three pieces of advice to getting the most out of the game: 1)You don't have to play a Strike Force (2000pt) game. It can take three hours to play. Instead focus on Combat Patrol (500pt) and Incursion (1000pt) games. The former can be started really easy with a combat patrol box and using BattleScribe Roaster all for like $150ish. Later, build towards Incursion which allows you to bring a single cool model, like the Tau Riptide. One of the new Battle Forces can generally get you close to that level for $210ish. And those games take about an hour or two (respectively), and both are played on the smaller 44"x30" battle mats. 2)Find alternatives. You can purchase previously owned armies and parts. Make friends so you can trade or buy spare parts from one another. You can also split some of the introduce boxes that contain two armies with a friend. Paint and glue doesn't have to be Game Worship specific. Army Painter has some good supplies at a cheaper price. You can also use proxies in a game so you can test if you want that $60+ model or not. More advance skills include kit bashing (combining pieces from two more more boxes) in order to get what you want. I needed three heavy flamers for my Terminators but only one comes in a box so I made two more of my own from other sets. And you can use magnets so you can swap out weapons between games instead of having to have separate models for each weapon choice. Seriously my Tau Crisis Suits are completely customizable so I can add any guns I want in-between games. 3) Finally, embrace the entirety of the hobby. It is not just a game, but also assembling and painting models. In this way, 40k is a lot like train hobbies and people who assemble model planes. I find it relaxing to assemble and paint my models. In fact I do more time with that then playing. This hobby is also a long time building. I didn't spent all the money at once but over time to have multiple armies. There are other play modes besides competition. You can play narrative and open. Open allows armies of different sizes to play together. I like narrative because it feels more like a role playing game or a campaign. There is also lore to read and books to enjoy. Yes this one might not make anything cheaper, but it can help you feel like you are getting more out of your money and be satisfied with your hobby.
The Battletech starter box is $60 and gets you the rule book and enough mechs for two people to start playing. Also, CGL supports 3D printed models in their tournaments.
@@VorpalDerringer I mean, my printer says I have a Warhamer 6R that's taller than a 40K Knight. So yeah, make the models whatever size you want. Pretty sure I repositioned the arms on it too, so there's that. Including the printer (on sale), it cost a similar amount to a knight warden.
I didn't really even know that there was a table top games Warhammer 40K. I thought it was just video games and books and shit. I'm pretty sure I got this recommended to me because I watched a ton of those Warhammer darktide RUclips shorts. I would be interested in seeing like the top five most expensive armies with the worst value for points ratio.
Games Workshop's continuing escalation of pricing is not surprising, given their history, as well as their stock now being public---what IS surprising is how not many people have seen Warlord's "Konflikt '47" as a great alternative, that even offers some startingly different aspects of gameplay, (pulling dice from bag for initiative, etc). Forget GW---go Warlord, and then when they get more market share, THEY can begin to strip our pockets...capitalism...it's a heckuva system.
I found out that the Start Collecting Daemons of Slaanesh box is actually really good for Fantasy. My GF decided to get into Warhammer, as myself and a few friends are playing Warhammer Armies Project. She liked the look of them, so I started looking into how we could get something on the tabletop for her. 3 of the start collecting boxes, an extra box of daemonettes, and a daemon prince was all we needed to put together a really solid looking 2k+ list for around that pricepoint (daemon prince, kitbash a herald on steed from a seeker, 2 units of daemonettes, 2 units of seekers, and multiple chariots as the exalted seeker chariot is actually just bashing together two normal chariot kits, so each of the SC boxes come with 2 normal chariots as an option too, if you buy an extra base). As someone with multiple armies, I was shocked at not just how cheap we could put that army together, but also how good that army looks on paper for the price and ease of acquiring it. The chariot kits even come with some extra bodies/bits, so we were able to squeeze out a couple of extra daemonettes and seekers out of it with just some steed bodies and bases we got for cheap on ebay too. I have no idea how daemons work in 40k tbh, but it wouldn't surprise me if you could make something decent out of two or three of these kits as well.
I find it hilarious that the elite marines are cheaper and weaker.
I smell a further range update and an attempt to up sales on older kits.

I used to have a friend a couple years back who had a collection of Rhino's.
He literally just went around conventions and clubs asking for Rhino's, usually got at least one or two. Also got some online by just asking guys who sold used Warhammer.
"Hey, i saw your listing for bikes, do you have any spare Rhino's i can just have?"
What did he do with these you ask? He built Ork terrain solely out of Rhino parts. I want to say that there were 19 or 20 Rhino's worth ripped apart and chopped up, it was probably more.
Everyone he showed it to loved it.
Pretty much all terrain pieces on the table were primarily Rhino panels, tracks, stacked gun walls...
And that's not even counting the shredded Rhino's he put on pretty much every model he had.

Just for the LOLs I actually bought a single Valdor model, got him a helmet and lance, and painted him as Kitten, the real captain general.
When you place the other Custodes troops on the table, does the Pillar Man theme play?
@@bificommander7472 Usually not... because I used to play Tau... and Kitten does not have the "Husbando" keyword to play him with Shadowsun. :p
@@NinjaEnShort THAT IS NOT FUCKING CANON! (I had to, you understand)

Dont play 40k and dont know how I ended up here, but you two are really fun to listen to. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your videos.
You don't have to play 40k to love 40k. Tons of great books if you like grim dark lore.
I have 3 impulsors and 20 hellblasters, I feel personally attacked by this episode 😂🤣
hellblasters are my first 40K kit 😬
I've been buying old metal catachans for as cheap as possible. Typically less than 2 bucks a model.
@@vxicepickxv dang I didn’t even know those were out there. I may have to get a few
I’m more and more glad I stacked a lifetime of Warhammer models back in 2019ish. I spent $95 on a Canis Rex back then and thought it was too much.
In the same boat I have enough minis and armies to last me a life time at my pace so I haven’t bought anything in over 2 years give or take.
Don't worry, in 5-10 years it'll all be obsolete just like the rest of us.~
Man when I started in oldhammer you could buy a box of 20 modles with a movement tray for 30$
My daemonettes from 3rd edition re-sell for more than I bought them for. Obviously this isn't the case for every model, but it's a collectable game and you can re-sell.
This is the one Warhammer channel I actually try to keep up with all uploads. You guys are great.
(this would require you to take three patrol detachments to use all three magus, but you could buy almost anything with the spare 50$ to get around that, like an abominant to buff your 20 aberrants)
Edit: I forgot about the proficient planning upgrades which gives you more wiggle room for options like replacing some of the aberrants with genestealers.
One year later: this is now $480 and gives you 1720 points. 10th edition is a cruel mistress.
Reminder everyone: This is USD MSRP, if you're in Europe the equivalent budget is MUCH easier and way more armies are doable (your exact currency depending)
Edit: The CSM one was Shadowspear Monopose so it loses some value unless you want those exact loadouts.
Yeah thanks for this comment, I live in the EU and was thinking ... I am sure I can make more armies work than shown here. A bit sad that prices for GW vary according to where you live. I guess if you live in New Zealand or Australia then you can build no armies for 500$ MSRP ;)
The Custodies army he put togther would cost you $410 (£340) if you bought if in the UK direct from GW, at the current exchange rate.
The current CSM one is not Shadowspear, Shadowspear was the Start Collecting and was actually far better than the Combat Patrol. It had something like 700-800 points in it already, absolutely insane value for what it was.
On the opposite end. RIP to our Australian hobbyists getting wrung out for every single plastic note in their pockets.
Yeah i live in Norway where 40k is even cheaper than UK, like, cheap enough that i dont really feel bad building a krieg guard army at MSRP, and i was kinda suprised that so few armies made it in here before i remembered how expensive US prices are.
I was excited to hear about Guard (the box cadia stands, was about 2 points max per dollar). Glad you talked about it!
I'm a newbie and watched this episode like 5 times.
Very entertaining. Please keep it up.
For Cavill boomers, might be a good idea to have
- Cheapest (while fairly good list) 2000 pts for each faction
- How good can each faction gets with 2x combat patrol++
Being new in this hobby, I REALLY loved this video for being really enjoyable and fun, but also taught me a lot!
When i got into 40k i bought the admech combat patrol and the guy at the store told me that it basicly was an army i could start playing games with. I love all the units in the box, but i needed a few more for it to even count as 500 points.
Ouch. Maybe he was dumping things he couldn't sell on the newbs.
I live in New Zealand (And for context, in store warhammer prices here are the worst in the world, it’s marked up by like 50% it’s disgusting) and watching this video reminded me that my 1000 point F tier dumpster fire list, is more expensive money wise than most 2000 point lists in other countries. Amazing video though, interesting as all hell and a great watch.
man, everything in NZ is marked up into hell
Yeah I'm a kiwi as well and just trying to get into warhammer, the prices bring a tear to my eye.
@@BSJDynasty I'm pretty sure the commonwealth isn't making it more expensive and the EU won't make it cheaper. sad days in NZ.
How is the independent retailer pricing in NZ compared to GW ?
This is a great breakdown for my friend who wants to get into custodes, love the work guys
Another tip for Grey Knights: You can magnetize the backpacks and make one strike/interceptor unit.
this video is genuinely useful to me, i've been wanting to get both a custodes army and a grey knights army. this video thought me more or less how im gonna do so. thank you.
Nice one! Comment for the comment throne (algorithm).
I find it quite ridiculous that the elite factions are the cheapest, but it makes sense since they have fewer units for more points, still a bit bonkers in terms of immersion.
It is kind of funny to remember how Space Marines are actually supposed to be a rare sight for many people in the Imperium.
@@SWProductions100 yeah and if that is the case, what about Custodes?!?!
You guys make great content. The chaos demon codex dissection was really great. Keep it up!
Necrons is even easier using the good ol’ imperium magazine. The royal court cost me £10!!! It was a f’ing steal ❤
So people end up on their 3d choice I guess
this is the second video I've listened too. I'm having lots of fun! thank you for making these.
I still remember when I started first collecting warhammer, you got a Space Marine Squad made of Zin for around 10 "Deutsche Mark" which translates to , if you believe the German government, to 5 Euros or if you believe your bank account and the prices in stores the day after the change, 20 Euros.
For space Marines I feel you could have used the Horus heresy starter set.
My friend and i did that for our chapters such a great way to start
if you consider that box it boosts space marines to #1 for cost efficiency
You mean the Age of Darkness box? Yeah, I guess if you split it in two, the cost is similar to a combat patrol
It’s cheaper to buy a 3D printer
@@xanderlaskey2753 This is true but if you just say 'buy a 3D printer' then that invalidates the point of this whole video. Besides, some people don't want to go through all of the hassle with supporting models, slicing them and then praying that your prints don't fail for a year until you get it right. They're missing out - I saved £30 on a squad of rubrics last week by printing some free files - but it is definitely a hassle
@5:15 "Owning two Impulsors kinda sucks."
Me, assembling my second Impulsor while listening to the video: *surprised Pikachu face *
...That's not a joke, either. That's literally what I'm doing right now. I bought one of those Combat Patrol boxes for myself, and someone else got me one for Christmas. The plus side is I got extra Suppressors and Eliminators out of the deal, so I wasn't too broken up about it.
Having two Impulsors isn’t so bad if one was free.
@@rmartinson19 This channel does have some bad takes, but I think that is just because of how they like to play and/or over emphasizing current meta.
If $500 was the budget and you were able to use eBay or Amazon and get the discounts, you could easily save the $30-50 needed to buy Wraithguard or Wraithblades to get it to almost exactly 2000 points at $500USD
For Aeldari, it's a bit tricky.
You guys are alright.
oh man the channel is growing fast , like 700 people in the last 2 days , thats pretty respectabel , keep up the great work :)
It's kinda unbelievable every time I stop by to check on the new video and see the numbers... Thanks so much to everyone who's helping!
Quality content. Wasnt expecting some of the results
thing is, in the uk knights cost £105 (about $110 ), and wardogs/armigers cost £55 (about $60), so it could probably be done over here
edit: also 10nth ed rules mean 1 knight can be 500pts and that can be done 4 times if you only want the big bois

This was fascinating to listen to! Im so happy to get this deep into the meta of collecting and balancing thanks to yall!
Thanks for doing the hard work, that was quite interesting
My shopping list was:
Age of Darkness Box - $299
Heavy Weapons Upgrade Set - Heavy Flamers, Multi-meltas, Plasma Cannons - $42 (this is mostly just for the Multi-Meltas to make Devastators)
Contemptor Dreadnought - $60
Drop Pod - $50
Techmarine with Servitors -$47
Total - $498
For the melee list, we're going with Blood Angels, mostly because I love them, but also because Death Company Marines are in a box of 5 for $42.
The Shopping list was:
Age of Darkness Box - $299
Sanguinary Priest - $35
Vanguard Veteran Squad - $55
Death Company x2 - $84
Space Marine Jump Packs x3 - $26.25 (you'll put 3 of these on your characters, the rest go to assault marines)
Total - $499.25
I think there's probably some Terminator heavy lists, not using the AoD box, that you could also build around the Horus Heresy Terminator which alone are about 3.9 points per dollar.
After beginning my first army which is Astra Militarum, I realized they were probably the most expensive and time-consuming army to get. Woops!
First as a player on a budget, love this format, second I wonder how the strikeforce boxes change it with the 210 dollar boxes
the best way to play on a budget is vtts
Oh yes, I used Battle Scribe to make a list for the custodes box and was coming up with a minimum 1375 points for $210.
All of them, if you write down the unit’s names on little paper squares instead of using figurines
Most of them, if you get a bunch of green army men to act as your figurines and spray-paint them different colors for different factions
Now you're thinking!!!
does shoplifting count
In Cali or NY yes.
I misread the title as the $500k challenge and thought, yeah that’s sounds about right for Warhammer.
3 price hikes since 2020... :D
20 price hikes from 2000-2019.
I've been there. I know.
Very entertaining video, thank you!
Honestly surprised that knights didn’t make it I thought itd be there but eh at least it’s a big close. On a side note yeah whoever priced LoV vehicles should be beaten with a few lead clubs for making the Sagitaur like $65 for a kit that contains only 1 Sagitaur
You can do this with space wolfs as well the blood claw box is 15 for $55.
This video made me feel both good and bad about life choices. I guess it's time to start building a new army of Ravenguard.

I love that the timing for this was "3 months before a new edition." I had also just started my first army when this video dropped, had no idea about the new edition coming, and my friend had to warn me of the upcoming edition before I dumped a bunch of cash on one of these armies lol
Love this channel
This is a fun podcast. You guys should do more lore focused content as well.
I'm really glad I found this channel. It's been a blast going through old podcasts.

HOLY SHIT! I didn't realize we just hit 500k! Thank you for telling us.
Congrats :)
The UK bashing aside, this was very good. I didn't even realise we were having blackouts. Maybe the US knows something we missed? I'm just getting back into 40k after years, and man, I didn't realise how expensive it all was.
Rhinos are free lol
i dont know anything about warhammer, dont really care about warhammer, and probably will never purchase anything warhammer - but this video was incredibly entertaining.
As a veteran of 40k of twenty years and spent thousands of dollars on this hobby, here are my three pieces of advice to getting the most out of the game:
1)You don't have to play a Strike Force (2000pt) game.
I know play BT myself, but how many 40k games can you play with a BT starterbox?
Yes, but those are all tiny monopose models.
@@pascalvanoorschot8722 You can play mechanicus or knights counts-as in Epic. So technically one.
I appreciate the idea, we'll probably cover it at some point, especially with all the recent price hikes.
Love the dynamic between the two of yall. Good shit!
Not knowing about Rhino's before, but checking the thumbnail halfway through the video made my day.
Best thumbnail I've seen in a long time ✨️
No rolling blackouts or mass stabbings here in the UK. We understand that random murder and poor public infrastructure are an American's perogative.
All of them are affordable. Just 3d print.
Nice, detailed, work. This is the first 40K video I watched in years.
This was incredibly entertaining, and a wonderful introduction to your channel!
