    Is there more than one way to interpret drop-two voicing? A book I’m reading on jazz harmony describes drop two as dropping the second note from the bottom of a close position chord ie: E in a Cmaj7 root position chord. However here you describe it as dropping the second note from the top of the chord so G . I have also heard it described this way from other sources. It’s kind of confusing because there seems to be more than one way people think about drop two.

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  3 года назад

      Hey Mjordan! Fortunately, Drop-2 has been clearly defined in music theory as taking the 2nd highest note (voice) in a chord and moving it down one octave. So, I would definitely say that there is only one universal way of understanding the formation of Drop-2. And I would say that the jazz harmony book you are reading is absolutely incorrect. Can you please share the book and page where you found this?

    • @mjordan315107
      @mjordan315107 3 года назад

      @@SkilledMusician sure the book is titled “A Creative Approach to Jazz Piano Harmony” by Bill Dobbins it’s on page 16 where he first introduces drop-two voicings. He says “Notice that in drop-two seventh chord voicings the chord members which were in the second voice from the bottom of a close position voicing are now in the top voice.” Upon looking at his examples closer now I’m seeing that he still ends up with the same voicings you present here. His explanation of what drop two means is what caused my confusion really, because it differs from how it’s described in so many other places. Other than this I like this book and the exercises in it, they have helped me learn about how to make more complex chords.
      I am just starting to study more advanced harmony on piano and jazz theory and I’ve been learning from RUclips and books, and reading stuff online. With somethings it’s hard to figure out what something means when reading it though. That’s why I always try to find a RUclips video on the concept I learn from books.

      @SkilledMusician  3 года назад +1

      I have that book and just looked at it. I can definitely see how that wording can trip anyone up. With that said, I am a huge fan of Bill Dobbins! His book, Creative Approach to Jazz Harmony, is definitely a seminal work, and has had a significant impact on how I think about harmony. Great choice! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!

    So how did you hear that melody... what made your brain go to that particular melody ???

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  4 года назад +1

      I generally try to hear like a singer. So even though I am not a singer, I sing all the time because I want to hear on the piano in that way. There are always pianistic things that we can do, but for me, melody is most important, and the human voice is the most melodic instrument I know. And so I want to capture that on piano. It still boggles my mind how singers are able to pull these crazy variations on the same song... Please let me know what specific timestamp you are referencing..

    Hey Cory! Great info. Can you drop more than one voicing?

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  4 года назад

      Hey Leon! Yes you can! And you'll find some interesting voicings, but a lot of them won't sound good... But there will be some cool ones. Let me know which ones you like.

I don't promote things but I would encourage anybody reading this to sign up, you will definitely see the difference in your home playing.
