Even as a progressive, I agree with John here 100%. The Dukes was an innocent, light hearted TV show dressed up in with southern characteristics that entertained an audience. It never approached the seriousness of racism or slavery, and it wasn't meant to. Put into context, Tom Wopat stated the "Flag was just a decoration really". That sums it up pretty well to me.

Spot on! I own every episode on DVD and I have a general Lee replica sitting on my mantle piece. Does that make me a racist? Yes and black people had major roles on the dukes of Hazzard as friends of the dukes and if you recall the sheriff of Chickasaw county was sheriff Little which yes people hold on... was a black man. It was always a strong grounded family moral message on the dukes we need more of this today and less (or none) of the Kardashians types showing their boobs and butts and calling that good and ok for our children to witness I mean that garbage is everywhere now the world has been flipped upside down, it's become a free-for-all. What's right is now wrong what was wrong is now right. We have to look in the mirror people and really realize where this is headed and put a stop to it. And if you don't think it's all by design you're fooling yourself. A wise man by the name of Jay severin once said "people can be brainwashed but most only require a light rinse". There is a whole side to the Civil War story that most people (including the talking heads here) are blissfully unaware of. The ending of slavery was a good thing and nearly everyone today, including southerners agree. But the civil war story doesn’t end with General Lee’s surrender. There was a very heavy-handed, repressive Union occupation of the south that went on for years after the war. The Dixie flag took on a whole new meaning from that point on. People who think flying the Dixie flag is celebrating slavery are ignorant.

@@lenblack1462 John Wilkes Booth wanted it to be "Heavy-handed" and repressive. His arguments were disarmed when Lincoln showed mercy. History does not agree that occupation was heavy-handed or repressive; rather it was the removal of troops that allowed violence, discrimination and more corrupt segregationist governments after ~1880.
The OP says that today they agree that ending slavery was good, but for 40 years or so they didn't want Black(Negroes) to prosper under their own talents, culminating in the Tulsa massacre of 1921 of what was called "Black Wall Street." The idea that Blacks didn't want to work became a myth in the 1980s, to attack social programs such as anti-poverty measures.
Even today, in and out of the South, people still believe in prison slave labor and denial of their right to vote, which otherwise they could elect representatives to improve their conditions and reduce recidivism. It's pretty nasty in CA that prison labor helps put out fires, but because of felony convictions they aren't allowed to get a job fighting fires for pay after release. Likewise the Census counts their prison as their residence, granting benefits to that community (and not where they were on the outside) that without voting means the benefits of population on government programs don't benefit them. A virtual 3/5 Compromise.

John is so very gracious, and very right about this "issue". People are misinterpreting a symbol and as a result they'll misinterpret him too. If people want to understand and they actually listen, they'll realize it's nothing to do with race. My understanding of the flag was exactly the same as Schneider's. It's the Rebel Flag. We call it that, we understand it to mean that. The meaning of the flag changed through time. There doesn't have to have something racial attached to it, that is so gross. It's someone gluing their own personal skeletons and psy-baggage onto a beautiful symbol that has meaning akin to Freedom or Liberty, not Civil War Slavery like the "liberals" would explain it.

The cheeky Atheist says "Oh my parents taught me my morals." Well how convenient and selfish is that? A system of belief borne out of luck. It invariably turns demonic because there's nothing there to keep the evil, greed, and the darkest aspects of human nature from coming out. Atheism is a kluge, that will produce bad results time and time again.

From here in the UK, I think a point has been missed. As much younger viewers when The Dukes of Hazzard launched here, the Confederate flag and the Dodge Chargers name of General Lee, 'immediately' told us all, that this show was set in the South of the USA.. Most of us lads & lassies here in the UK thought the flag indicated 'Country Music', and never connected politics or race relations to it. (And still don't). Watch the shows and you can't help notice that there really wasn't any racial prejudice or political point scoring present at all !

There may be a different view in Europe (though Hungary's leader's racism is on the news tonight). My uncle got a European copy of _Song of the South_ and figured out how to play it here. Disney doesn't know what to do with it here today. I read the problem is that it doesn't say explicitly that it's set in a post-slavery, Reconstruction South, so it seems like slaves are happy with their lot. I read Walt Disney took out a line by Uncle Remus saying, "I don't have to take that; I'm a free man" because his advisor on Southern Culture didn't like it. That would have helped it a lot.

Having been born n raised in the south, its been the elite liberal outsiders that have made it an issue!! The flag at its core has always been a symbol against ‘the man”/ govt overreach !! I knew a bl k man...who in the late 90s early 2000s rode around in cola sc w a big flag flying in the bed of his pickup truck!!! The flag remained a symbol of the south as a reminder of what happens w govt overreach!!! The govt didn’t go to war w the south initially bc of slavery. It went to war bc the president didn’t think that the south had the right to succeed! When he needed more bodies to fight bc the south was winning, it was then that per suggestion he used it as a way to recruit blacks to join the war effort. If you do some deep research, that is if the proxy govt overlords haven’t scrubbed it from the internet (since ppl do read books anymore), you would find this to be true! Think the govt wouldn’t go door to door or burn cities n towns to the ground??! Believe it...bc they’ve already done it!! Slavery at that time would have become obsolete had they allowed the things taking place during that time to play out(I’m in no means defending slavery, but we have to stop viewing history through the lense of today)! The movement to end slavery was high, plus the industrial revolution was working its way down south! It would have completely changed the landscape. The problem was the fact that the north was a lot richer than the south which did not have the money to purchase such machines. There is a black man in either Charlotte or Raleigh nc who has brought to light the interesting dynamics of the south. Look him up!

My late dad introduced me to the show when I was just a toddler & I fell in love with the General Lee & the flag on the General Lee. I really don't think The Dukes of Hazzard is racist at all. That '69 Dodge Charger with the 01 on the sides of the car is a really cool car. I watched & I loved that show growing up. I own the complete series in digital format on RUclips. I just think it's a great show & I really don't believe it's racist at all.

What an incredible gentleman John Schneider is! First time I've seen someone on a show like this not talk over anyone and allowed someone to interrupt him and he stopped to let her talk. God bless John Schneider. Cancel dr. Junkie.

"Cancel [Doctor Walters]." That's what Republican cancel culture is about: don't teach or talk about slavery, lynching, discrimination, segregation and institutional racism (e.g. redlining), which they call "critical race theory."

A talented man who speaks the truth. I don't look at The Dukes of Hazzard as a racist show. It was a fun show that was not meant to offend people, but people do have their own way of thinking & that's fine.
