      I think this is an underrated comment. It's true the P bass has the louder, higher output pickup, so plugging them in back to back won't sound the same. However that comparison isn't that useful because in real use you'd adjust the amp settings. In that case I agree J can cover the P bass a lot better than the other way around.

  • @MotoGreciaMarios

    A very important anatomical difference between the two that I never see mentioned or discussed is the vastly different positioning of the "thigh" arc - the arc which determines where/how exactly the bass sits on your thigh when you play seated. This affects the balancing of the instrument and what kind of work your right arm needs to do in order to balance the bass on your lap. If you want to play for 3 or 4 hours straight these things matter a lot.

Don't bye new ones unless you got lots of bucks for custom shop models. New American standards suck. You can get great used ones from 1995-2000 for half the price that kick ass. Alder wood for me. I don't like ash. They sound dead and have less mids. Now If I could only have one it would be the P-Bass. It's #1 for a reason. I just love it.

  • @gillyl9957
    @gillyl9957 Год назад

    J bass has more clarity and nicer upper mids. A j bass has more rewards the better the player you become. It’s all in the fingers. P bass is tried and true, but IMO J bass is the king. If you have a strong developed finger technique you can coax anything from a jazz. Remember ALL fenders are different too. Some jazz on neck can get super close to a P and surpass it as far as tone/sitting in a mix with strong attack. Amp of course matters too. If your thing is just low mids and an SVT, a P is tried and true …but IMO I just prefer say how Geddy makes his J in Rush just cut with that upper growl while a more defined midrange just punches out. YMMV but good fingers and the RIGHT magic J bass and it’s an endless river……you gotta go through any Fender style instrument to find the magic ones.

      Between the P bass and Jazz bass, I'd personally say a Jazz bass is better for rock/metal because its sound is brighter and not as dull and subdued as a P bass. In short, they're both good instruments, but a Jazz bass is more versatile because of the pickups as the video mentioned. Another thing to note, is that the neck of the Jazz bass is thinner, so playing fast would be easier on the Jazz bass.

    "Which one is better?"
    The jazz. The answer is the jazz. You've got way more tonal flexibility, more control over your sound, you can do more with it. It can ape a precision sound. It's the better bass.

    Can't you just make a j more or less into a p by turning the tone of the bottom one all the way down?

    • @richardmilligan1410
      @richardmilligan1410 4 года назад

      That's a good point. However if you roll the tone half down on the Jazz neck pickup it will only be close because the P pickup is wired humbucking so it will have more low mids.

    • @its1110
      @its1110 3 года назад +1

      I'd likely do a split P/S selectable hummbucker up top and single-coil bridge.
      Play with the split's placement a bit and I think you'd get something all-around useful.
