Planting a Limelight Hydrangea Hedge

  • Earlier this spring, I finally planted the row of hydrangeas I've been wanting for so long. I dreamed of making a hedge of large Limelight hydrangeas. Limelight are a paniculata hydrangea. They're the most sun tolerant of hydrangeas and are profuse bloomers!

    ------------------------------

    Limelight grow large, about 8-10 feet tall, with large white blooms that open green at first, then turn white and age to a light blush color. Their blooms are one of the largest and the stems holding them are upright and sturdy. They can also be controlled with intense pruning.

    I planted 18 and spaced them approximately 6 feet apart so someday they'll slightly overlap to create a hedge.

    - Start with a well-watered plant.
    - Dig a hole roughly two times the size of the container. - Do not over-amend the native soil. The roots need to become used to the soil in which they will grow.
    - Break up the roots of the plant and place it in the hole so the crown is slightly above the ground.
    - Replace the soil and pack lightly
    - Water deeply, two to three times per week if raining less than one inch per week.

    That is going to be spectacular! I LOVE it! And Limelights are unbeatable but those puppies get massive. It’s hard to tell just how close they are to the arbs, but I’m wondering if they might be a smidge too close unless you’re keeping them pruned. Mine are a good 6 foot wide and only about 4 years old. Anyway, I love the formality of it and your design style indoors and out, is always impeccable. Everything you do is done with such great care and tidiness and I love how much you respect those who taught you along the way. And you have the most information-filled, practical and beautiful videos on youtube. ☺️☺️. And those arbs are extraordinary!! Please update later in the summer!!

    Kaleb, have the Limelight hydrangeas formed their blooms yet? In a month or so, they will be glorious! I love hydrangeas too, the panicle and arborescence hydrangeas are dependable bloomers in my zone 5a. I have a few macrophilia hydrangeas, but since they only bloom on old wood, mine usually die back to the ground in the winter, so no blooms. 👀 I'm in the process of replacing the older ones with these reliable bloomers. 💕 I always enjoy your videos! ~Margie

    I have a row of Limelight hydrangeas along the roadside in the front of the property with a second row of another variety next to the Limelights. All will eventually grow to about 8’ tall and wide and will provide some nice screening. Question: Will you need to move the arborvitae eventually since the Limelight grow so wide?

  • @davinadavies419
    @davinadavies419 3 года назад

    I made my limelights into trees one is 10 foot tall by at least 8 ft wide I have four of them, and then I have two strawberry cream, and and also I just have the plain white hydrangeas and four of the pink hydrangeas. Other than daylilies those are my favorite flowers

    Hello! Thanks for this video! Have you ever planted a hydrangea on a slope? Will it grow upwards, upright, after compensating for the slope? Or is it going to droop over down the incline and tip over if I don't assist it and growing upwards? It's not a huge incline. Maybe 35°
