Planet of the Apes (1968) Crash Sequence - Reimagined - 4K (UHD)

- This effects-laden crash sequence was excluded from the original Planet of the Apes due to budget reasons. Here I have used CGI to "restore" it so to speak. I tried to emulate the 1968 effects aesthetics to the best of my ability. Earth matte painting provided by David Ross.

One of the best surprise endings of all time. Seeing this movie, without knowing anything about it, was mind-blowing.
It was quite the eye-roller when they released the DVD edition ….with that legendary ending printed on the case.
For some reason this is far more convincing than CGI used in big budget movies these days.
Because the production companies don't give the VFX companies the time and money to do the work -next day deadlines are never good.
ummm, same tools
You have all the tools to build a house and a guy hires you to build a house for him and he gives you two days and the cheapest material to do it. When you manage to finish the house on time by working day and night he tells you that he wants a different house on another angle and that you have to pay for the material and the work for that yourself because that's in the contract. He gives you 12 hours to build the new house because he's going to move in tomorrow. That is how life in the VFX business is.
Wow how did I know I was going to find a comment like this
@@FP194 Because hopefully you know, like I, that CGI will never compete with a real effect, stunt or on location shot, hell it can’t even compete with matte paintings.
I knew one of the men who built the ship. His name was Tom Monson. He showed me an old photo of him and another guy standing inside the partially completed ship, which I instantly recognized for what it was. He said he'd kept the blueprints but hadn't been able to find them for quite a while. He said he worked on one other movie then moved to Weiser, Idaho where he opened a heating and cooling shop. Born in 1932, passed away November 6, 2020.
If those blueprints could be found... If they were among his stuff when he died they probably got thrown away.
I hope someone does find them and brings them to light.
I just love the way this slight revamp was edited in. It really adds nicely to the classic without messing it up.
I just loved the sight of the stars zooming past, it gave the impression that the Ship was powering along, close to the Light Speed limit... I agree that it was one of Charlton Hestons best moments... I think that he realised just how amazing and impressive it was...
So good. I love how the cockpit is a couple of leather armchairs.
LOVE this. Love everything about how innocent ,yet adventurous this movie was, all in one.
Much better than I expected. Restrained, very well integrated and edited. Well done.
Amazing work! The attention to detail is remarkable, and this scene could be edited into the original release seamlessly.
Post credit scene for the new timeline, Head canon.
Lol...WTF is WRONG with you?
I like the idea of cutting this into the film. Although I miss the various course correction attempts the ship makes in the original.
Course corrections? No, that was just choppy editing of what footage they could get from the local aerial vendor who was hired.
Yes, I actually prefer that version, with the sounds of those engines. It made the surroundings and destination more mysterious.
@@generalyellor8188 No, they were course corrections. The nuclear war has so altered the landscape the ships computer cannot find the references it was expecting.
@@scoopicman Yes, when we hear the engines firing up, it is because the auto-pilot is trying desperately to get the spacecraft on to a steady flight path, prior to landing.. ( it was stated that the ship was supposed to land on solid ground, and NOT in the water )...
That's a good idea. Show the ship tumbling, and trying to correct. Like the flat spin scenes from the "The Right Stuff". Fast cuts with the original POV chaos shots. Love the way it enters the water like a bullet. Blends well with the interior scene with the windows clearing.
Maybe show it was caused by a malfunctioning RCS. Regains some aerodynamic control at the last seconds but too late.
This is what the scene desperately needed, very well done!
Desperately? No. This level of technology wasn’t available(obviously) in 1968. The scene works fine as is. Some things have to be left to the imagination.
No. It' done fine for 50 plus years, but it is very clever.
@@jonoeschger1552 Agreed, but they could have provided different angles of the craft using models. "2001" was also done in 1968 and that was spectacular.
The original looked far better. This reimagining is already dated.
@@jonoeschger1552 This was available in 1968. Look at JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN, and UFO, from Gerry Anderson.
That "miniature" hitting the water was pretty convincing!
This is brilliant. The crash is the weakest aspect of an amazing movie and I’d happily watch your version integrated into it 😊
Superb alternative version. Excellent CG work, could not better. Love it.
I saw The Planet Of The Apes with my dad in 1969 at the Los Gatos, CA movie theater, its one og my fondest memories of me and dad
This is amazing, you maintained the aesthetic it was a major upgrade yet not overbearing. 20th century should contract you to create a special DVD release, an upgrade of the effects throughout.
You ought to sell that to 20th Century Fox, and have that edited in!
No disrespect to you or to the artist who did this, but this is a terrible idea. The original director, Franklin J. Schaffner, is long dead, so there is zero authorial claim to be made for such a change. People complain about the Star Wars Special Editions, but at least George Lucas has the artistic authority to make the call.
FYI - 20th Century Fox no longer exists. It is now “20th Century Studios” owned by Disney Studios. “Fox” sold the studio and the rights to entire film catalog in 2019.
Get help
This works really well but the re-entry does make the viewer think of Earth, which probably needs to be avoided. A POV shot is a little more distancing.
Nope.
I love the original crash. However this padding of the scene is done so well, it’s really thrilling. Thank you. Love to see you work in more of the same style on the rest of the movie. And I’m a huge fan of the original.
Well done! The crew waking up in the drink was one of the most memorable scenes in this movie, you just made it better
Really well done! As a kid, I always felt that there was more to the ship, just below the surface of the water. And for years, I mistakenly thought that more of the crew drowned. But I was finally able to see the movie again in 1988 and discovered all of its sequels.
I used to love crashing my spaceship models as a kid, this is great!
You did an excellent job doing remarcable visuals while adapting to the film's late 60s aesthetic.
One of the greatest openings in movie history - that first hour was amazing
Very well done! Not sure it would have improved the film for me. I always liked how disorienting the landing scene was and how the rest was left to the imagination.
Exactly...
💯
This is great! The one thing I would say is you need to make the sound of the Icarus hitting the water "bigger" to better convey the mass of the ship. It sounds too small. But everything else is fantastic. I love the way you emulated the look of 1968-vintage SFX rather than making it look modern. I'd love to see this added to the film!
On the contrary, I thought the sounds was just right. An excellent dive doesn't make much of a splash or sound so I'm good with this excellent added intro.
I think you are absolutely correct on this point. A light splash doesn’t convey the force of the crash at all well. In fact, the sound effect is too feeble and almost comical.
Wow! THAT is awesome! If they had the filmmaking technology this clip has back in the late 1960s, THIS scene would DEFINITELY have been featured! Bravo!
"How's the new resolution quality?"
Heston "YOU BLEW IT UP!"
Tremendous work! If the studio ever does a high definition restoration, they should contact you to use this footage.
Bwaaa ha ha
@@arthurhall8238 Why the laugh? He did a great job and it matches the original footage really well. All that is missing is more of the spaceship's sound and perhaps some longer takes.
@@phillipbanes5484 Okay, but that's been done before... the new release of Star Trek - The Motion Picture comes to mind. You have to admit this is great work.
@@tripsadelica ummm..no...WRONG
As an "old man" who loves these original movies and grew up as a child watching the TV series, this is awesome, well done.
Great stuff! This is an amazing and faithful update to a classic opening. I especially like the '60's-style animated flames and the distant shot of the ship passing over the terrain. Eerie sound! Surprised I missed this long ago, but glad it was served up by algorithms (I watch many such effects re-dos). We're all happier for works like this.
Most impressive! Always wanted to see something like this. Figured they had budget limitations.
The shot where it hits the water and blows water up in the air -- excellent.
Absolutely incredible. Extremely nice work! I've always hoped 20th Century Fox would re-release POTA to theaters - doing it up big time with a very special 3D version of this classic movie. Your reworked CGI opening would be a perfect addition!
Really well done, guys.
Had CGI existed in 1968, this is probably how it would have been staged.
Excellent depiction of the spaceship crash landing in the lake, seamlessly mixed in with original 1968 footage. Daniel Broadway has a wonderful future in the special effects industry.
This movie had an awesome sound track by the great composer Jerry Goldsmith. One of the many great films he scored.
I am often skeptical of these remakes but this is wonderful, primarily because you could edit it into a print of the film and it would fit. Very well done.
Fantastic, superbly done, dear digital filmmaker, creator! Yes, this sequence should be added to the original film.
I love this! Despite the added more modern special effects it's still in-keeping with the dated film! Please make these changes to the original five!
Down to the matte lines that would've been present had they made it in 1968.. Brilliant attention to detail!
This was EXTREMELY well-done. Thanks!
WOW now this is so well done. Wish this was in the movie.
This is awesome! I only wish for that siren sounding, turbine engines type of wails used in the original scene was included. The turbine sound sends shivers up my spine every time.
Yes! I agree! I love the original engines whine!
Does anyone second my thoughts that the "Turbine roar" heard in the Icarus landing...was the same sound used for the 1960's Batmobile engine-?! 🤔
@@postoriaaguirre2433 Yes it was. It was also used in Lost In Space's The Jupiter 2 engines.
Lost in Space's Jupiter 2 Engines, way before Batman stole the sound
Wow! Incredible! I wish this had been in the film!
Dude there just isn't the words for this. Simply wowzers !
Amazing work! Very dramatic. If there was anything I would change.....I would have made the sound of the water impact much "beefier". It needed a lot more base to make it sound like a large, heavy object hit it at tremendous speed.
This is awesome. I love the way you used to film's star patterns in the worm hole!
The weird thing is, most of this could have been done in 1968 for $100,000. The only big difference is that we would catch a glimpse of piano wire, and the splashdown wouldn't have had nearly the kind of energy shown here.
The ship was never in any kind of wormhole.
Excellent
Feels like it always belonged.
Detail and quality was fantastic
Thanks
Beautifully done, BEAUTIFULLY DONE! This was excellent to watch! Thank you!
My friend, that was AWESOME!! The only negative is that it gives away the fact that they have indeed returned to earth , which is pretty important storywise. Well done!!
Good point. The whole thing about the surprise ending is that they didn't know they were back on Earth.
You make an excellent point. Although in retrospect, it occurred to me that the apes speaking *English* throughout the movie would have given away the fact that they had returned to Earth long before the Statue of Liberty ever puts in an appearance!
Another point: the moon in the sky and the stars should have made it obvious they were on earth.
The could have been on a parallel world.
Nice! And now we want the full movie! 😁
Haha well done. Even as a kid I could tell that the crash sequence left a lot to be desired. This feels much smoother.
By coincidence, I just rewatched all the originals this week. This opener hadn't aged well in an otherwise still excellent movie.
This is some solid work.
Absolutely marvelous! Such talent you have. I love this movie, I saw in a theater in it's first release. Your tribute is fabulous. I love it too.
Great Video! It is so much better than the sound effect of theJupiter 2 crashing- which was disconcerting the first time I saw this movie.Bravo.
This sequence added to the original would have knocked it outta the park for me.
Amazing! Perfectly executed.
Now do the home please .
When I was a child, I watched the first movie on TV. Near the end, my dad, who was watching it with me, proudly said, 'Actually, this place is ___!' My sense of surprise was forever lost.
This is a memory of my late foolish father.
Wow! Bravo! This looks absolutely awesome and retains the original's 1968 look so well. The guys on "Corridor Crew" need to screen this and discuss it (if they haven't already).
Very good work this is an exact representation of Taylor s ship crash landing on the Earth of the future (the planet of the apes year 3978) this scene needs to be added in the movie!
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB
I love this film and the original effects but this is nicely done
That was absolutely beautiful, so respectful of the original material and well integrated. Bravo!
Very nicely done! I can't believe you did the spash-down. It looks great. It has the feel of a miniature - which si what they would have done felt sure you'd cut away to the interior. Very Impressive and kudos for the gutsy approach!
Should be added to a 4k release, awesome work
Epic, so much detail
Whoever designed the interior did a great job.
Good job. "We weren't programmed to land in the water".
AWESOME!!!!!! Thank you so much for producing and presenting that footage. That was a huge mistake editing out that scene.
Again thanks!
absolutely fantastic work! i've watched the original at least a million times and this revision fits perfectly!
This is fantastic perfect new entry should release the whole movie in advance screenings in cinema 😊🚀
Very nice!
I watches "Apes" at the local driver in back in 68' when I was 14.
Fantastic!
Great job. It's a subtle addition and blends in nicely with the original movie.
Now, that’s how it should have been. Can never get enough of the Icarus.
Yeah somebody just made this i’ve seen planet of the apes 1000 times and I’ve never seen this scene before
That’s a pretty intense wake-up routine, honestly.
amazing work bro. loved it - 10x better than the original bumpy camera shots.
Really great job with the CGI as well as editing it into the existing movie
Nicely cut. It adds just a little bit of polish to a sequence that really needs it.
Thanks for improving this crash scene ,it’s a shame it took so long but lm glad to hav seen it.
Great job! Now try and reimagine how a few apes were able to raise that ship from underwater, patch it up, launch it, and go back in time to 1970s Earth in the third installment of Planet of the Apes. Suspension of disbelief was very great lol.
_Suspension of disbelief was very great lol._
Still is. Audiences continually buy the notion of elves and wizards and zombies. (And you know how producers can suspend their own beliefs when big money is involved. 😁) All that said... yes. Some plot devices can really be insulting.
Yes... Here is the answer... Please google... Liberty 2 Lander... and check out images... On the original POTA film, we never saw the lower half of the ship...The theory is that, when contact was lost with Taylor, then Earth sent out TWO rescue ships... One was a 4 man crew ship, the same as Taylor's ship, piloted by Skipper ( with 3 empty seats ), and the other was a 3 man crew ship, piloted by Brent ( with 2 empty seats )... So now we are at the start of Beneath the POTA film, and Skipper's ship has crashed on the desert... Note that we never see Brent's ship, but we must assume that it landed successfully in the upright position... Move forward to the end, where Taylor presses the doomsday button... We can assume that Brent told Cornelius, Zira and Milo where his ship was located, and that all they had to do was to go on board, and sit back and press the auto-pilot button, and the ship would take off and return to Earth... So, our hero Taylor has destroyed the Earth, and the 3 Apes have witnessed it, as they take off ( As Zira described watching the horizon turn orange )... Now we start the film Escape from the POTA, and we see Brent's 3 man crew ship being pulled out of the water ( Note... NOT Taylor's 4 man crew ship )... I think this is the only possible explanation as to how the 3 Apes return to Earth in a different ship to Taylor's ship...
Excellent work. When I first saw this on the big screen I thought this kind of perspective was lacking.
That was one of the most awesome edits I've seen in my lifetime, I'm speechless. ❤
Great. I missed this scene in the original movie ever since the first time I watched it. Now the movie could be considered complete.
Completely excellent. This is what it would have been like in the film if they’d had the VFX tech at the time. Thanks for this, I really enjoyed it.
Probably the only major weakness in the film addressed here besides the campy ape masks which you just have to accept. Nice.
great job!!! keep the classics alive!!!!
The build quality on the ships internal areas looks amazingly good.
One of the men who built it was a HVAC sheet metal fabricator named Tom Monson. Born 1932, died 2022. He had a copy of the blueprints for it but said he'd lost them somewhere. AFAIK nobody found them before he died.
Fantastic work definitely worth putting onto the original
This is absolutely fantastic. Great job.
I thought I was a fan and this movie spoke to me 25 years ago........I am in awe
wow - someone either has or has a fantastic career in the movies ahead of them, brilliant work !
It respects the original visual style and the timing is good... you got it right
A classic! Great design on the ship too!
That’s one tough little spaceship!
This is amazing work, it should be released.
OMG! this is amazing, defo calls for this to be added to new a 4K POTA upgrade blue ray!Well done!
It looks great! Wonderful job!
This is how it should have been done. Good job.
Damn, this is amazingly good stuff. Well done!
that was awesome! thanks for posting!!
Two things: I vividly remember the sound in the original scene (probably my strongest memory of the scene), and this seems empty without it. Also in the original you can see it was spinning as it came in and an exterior shot of that would be good.
