Sepak is a Malay word meaning kick (Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore) and Takraw is a Thai word meaning ball weaved in a material. So yes, it has become a South East Asian game. Currently Thailand are the World Champions and Malaysia is number 2 in the world.

I was a high jumper in school, then tried to play sepak takraw. I can say from my experience, these two are totally different kinda jumps. In sepak takraw, you gotta time your jump based on the trajectory of the moving ball, initiate a roll in the air, extend your feet into a kick, make contact and then figure out how not to land on your head.
After that, I slowly retreated back to high jumping lol.

Yes, totally true. The game 'sepak raga' was mentioned in Malay Annals (composed in 16th century) regarding on famous execution of Bendahara's son (bendahara= Prime Minister) Tun Besar, by the Raja Muhammad, the prince of Malacca. According to the story, Tun Besar was playing sepak raga when the prince passed by. He accidentally kick the ball and hit the prince head. The prince was so angry and he kills the boy at once. This incident resulting the prince to be striped from his position as an heir to Malacca throne. He then was sent to Pahang (a principality under Malacca Empire) and become the 1st Sultan of Pahang.

Sepak Takraw is a traditional sport originated by the Malay and popular in the Malay Nusantara Archipelago. The sport have been around since more than 500 years ago. The meaning “ Sepak is kickinig “ the ball call Takraw and the balll was made by meterial of rottan. That also use to call it Sepak Raga which is the ball is smaller than Takraw.. The organisation council and committee “Sepak Takraw Association “ was formed by the Perses tAssociation in Singapura and have decided that to include Sepak Takraw sport to participate into ASEAN Game just like Olympic Games. And now the game was so increasingly famous and popular even countries like Korea, Japan and many others also participate in this traditional sport.

As a martial artist I beg to differ, muay thai doesn't do aerobatic kicks. None of our East Asian martial art does. Here we favor mid to low stances, grappling and hand strikes.
On the other hand it is easy for me to understand how the Korean are catching up fast. Their culture of taekwando is just tailor made for takraw. I imagine it can be the same for China if they pick this up. Those northern kungfu are famous for their flying kicks and acrobatics.

    • @Yumm...
      @Yumm... 3 года назад +1

@@stealthmode4755 I mean I essentially agree but not to your full extent. As a someone trained at multiple types of gyms as well.
Yes, taekwando is probably the most acrobatic, especially with kicking. And I think taekwandoins would translate great to this sport.
Nak Muay’s may not be as aerobatic but they’re legs are lightning fast (those low leg kicks at end of combos) and the coordination with their legs is still second to none. The reflexive action of checking kicks and returning is unmatched (even with karatekas and taekwondoins).
Also, thoughts on Saenchai and Lerdsila who are wildly acrobatic and a couple of the greatest nak muays?
So my statement that it’s “no surprise Thailand is the best” and have the “best leg kickers in the world” aren’t even wrong… Muay Thai is still wildly considered the most effective kicking art because how they mix with the hand striking. TKD is prominently kicks but put a taekwondin against nak muays and look at the kicking difference. There’s even videos online
Understanding that Korean are fastly rising and that it’s no surprise Thailand are great can co-exist. It’s not in opposition

Americans have a very similar game to sepak takraw: hacky sack. Just like takraw, hacky sack's basic learning "game" is a bunch of players in a circle keeping the ball up in the air. Once you've mastered kicking the ball you add rules to the game. For hacky sack this is becomes footbag net which is almost exactly sepak takraw only with a much smaller ball and usually on sand like beach volleyball. This make American sepak takraw teams surprisingly good because takraw is actually an easier game compared to hackysack.

It is nothing like football . I play football but this requires completely different skill set and movements of the body and leg. Originally the ball was made from weaved rattan like a basket, hence the original name name 'sepak raga' (kick the basket). it is quite hard and rough on the head if you are not used to it. But under the new ISTAF (International Sepak Takraw Federation) rules, regulation balls are now made of plastic.. but they are still as hard

But the impact of plastic ball seems stiff compared to rattan ball tho

The exciting thing about spiking a sepak takraw ball during the game is the spiker can literally think in a blink of an eye on what to do with his spiking type: a direct spike, a placing spike or a tap spike. A good spiker has the ability to 'direct' his spike to any corner of the opponents' court with a powerful hit, and has to make the decision on what to do and where to direct the spike within a split second. Not everyone has the ability to do that. If Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the best players for football/soccer, as the late Kobe Bryant in basketball, then it's accurate enough to say that in sepak takraw, there are many Ronaldos, Messis and Bryants.

Wanna add something that isn't mentioned in the video you guys watched. The ball nowadays is made of synthetic plastic. Back in the 90's, the ball used in Malaysia, Thailand and other SEA countries was made from pure thick rattan plant. N trust me, it hurts like hell especially if it hits your head (getting spiked by it). It hurts the legs too and that's why the origin of the game was played by people who were in constant wars n stuff. They are basically warriors whose bodies are toughened already unlike modern players.

This is a kind of sport that really impresses and excites me. It's like ball game & martial arts combined 😊 It takes a lot of athleticism and height & size are not necessarily big factors unlike in basketball and volleyball. Sepak takraw really fits typical southeast asian built so i think we can excel here. I hope more young people will consider this sport. From where I am, this sport is known by everyone because it is in school textbooks and it's always part of National games, but very few actually play it. If we can have skateboard in olympics, we should have sepak as well.

Its originally from Malaysia but adopted by other countries through out south east asia especially Thailand, the Thai change the name of it, the original names of it was Sepak raga raga means BUSKET, because the balls was made with rattan an weave like busket and it was hard! the word for Raga or baskets in Thai is Takraw so when Thailand got the sport they changed it to Sepak Takraw, but they keep the Malays words sepak which means to kick. to Sepak raga/takraw is basically kicking busket.
