The P-51 wing is less reflective because the wing panel seams were all filled with glazing putty from Acme, but the putty was red and so the whole wing was painted silver to cover it. The fuselage did not receive the same treatment and so was left as unpainted aluminium. This means that period Mustangs didn't really have visible panel lines on their wings, with the key exception of the gun access hatches for obvious reasons! Fab model, you've absolutely nailed the paintwork. I can never get metallic paints looking so realistic!
That’s a great job on the old Tamiya bubble top. I really like the restraint you had with natural metal finish. The less shiny effect you saw in reference photos of the wings is because the wings were painted with an aluminium lacquer. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.
I'm so happy all the acrylic paint makers finally made their own zinc chromate green and yellow. Once upon a time, only Model Master and Testor's had them in nasty enamel paints.
Thank you very much! Looking back on this video I’m not too sure if I’m happy with every aspect of it… so I think this is an excuse to get another mustang🤣🤣
The weathering looks amazing, all the techniques shown such a must for weathering anything I feel. Thanks for showing it all,and I have just recently started painting step after step, with an f1 kit,and it is a joy to paint after most steps.I hope we can finally talk at Hannants, maybe next week or two weeks time,as I currently have 2 more kits to finish. Thanks a lot!
Great metal finish - I agree about some of the overly patchy panel finishes out there. I will be trying a similar approach on an early EE Lightning but I've moved to water-based acrylics so will have to use something like Metal Colour.
Thank you very much! I’m unfortunately not too familiar with many water based metallic paints, I’m sure there are some out there but they might not work the same as these super metallic ones!
Very nice build of a beautiful aircraft, I have a real soft spot for the old Tamiya kit, just a couple of observations, as an RAF Mustang IV I'm pretty sure it should have a louvred breather plate on the lower nose and an Aeroproducts propeller. Like your channel a lot and duly subscribed
Hannants is just down the road from the RAF museum at Hendon. Free to get in, only pay for the parking. Best collection of WWI and WWII fighters and bombers.
I remember the raised wood grain effect molded in to the old Monogram 1/48 P-51D kit. Now you have to do it with paint without making it look sad and cheap.
@@machmodels like you said as well it's getting the right mix of panels without overdoing it! I did try a little on the KI61 I'm doing atm but with the issues iv had Its pretty lost on it now lol oh well next time
Have you thought about using a Yahu, Eduard Look or any of the 3D decal versions of instrument panels? Just about every model variant of the P-51D/K/CAC Mustang is covered. Easy to use by either replacing the kit panel entirely or fitting to the front of a sanded down kit panel. Experiment with a panel from the spares box and then apply to the next kit you make. I was very wary of these things but after using a couple I am a convert. Definitely worth consideration to enhance your already great build.
Thank you sir! Of course, initially based them in an iron colour, then mixed up a 70/30 brown brass mix and focused that at the base of the stubs. Matt varnished and stippled some dark brown wash into some of the details. Hope that helps!😄
Looks great, picked up a few great tips there, many thanks. Perfect timing too, I'm about to start an F-51D in a similar scheme!! Any recommendations on the pencils??
Thankd, I enyoyed that! I also twanged the landing gear light across the floor neber to be seen again. Could you drill out the exhausts? Or at least paint the ends black to create an illusion of their being tubes..?
Tamiya's canopy fits better than that in the open position. The aft end of the canopy on your model sits too high off the fuselage spine. Other than that a beautiful model. Keep up the good work.
@@machmodels Using the antenna rigging might be the problem. It's not allowing the canopy to sit properly. EZ line might help if you are so inclined to use it. I don't know if you have an Eduard canopy or not? When I built my Tamiya 1/48 Mustang I didn't bother to do any rigging with the antenna wiring. The canopy sat down very well as on the real aircraft. Anyway, good luck. I am building Revell's 1/32 Mustang and I most likely won't rig that airplane. But, who knows, I might!!!!!

Great comment. I never knew that. I have a few Mustangs to build so will keep this is mind.
Thank you very much much for such an informative comment! I assume they did this for laminar flow… right?
Thank you for the kind words😄

That beautiful one piece cowl is what makes this, one of the best P-51D Kits out there even 20 years later.
I couldn’t agree more!😄
ICM P51 is a full copy of this kit!

Haha the joys of modern paints!😄🤣
Love your builds. Informative, precise, a bit of a joy. No full orchestra music or overwhelming noise.😊
Thank you very much, really appreciate such a positive comment😉😄
The drop tank joke was probably the first time I have wholeheartedly laughed when watching any build videos....good job :'D
Hahaha great! Thank you for watching😉😄
Excellent rendition of an iconic plane and kit with a unique paint scheme!

The Lotus is going great, just needs decals after a gloss coat, and should be done.Maybe I should try a plane kit with sooooooooo much experience. ;)
Amazing finish, enjoyed the video very much.

Very nice job. Such a nice kit. One note, the wide lower sections of the prop blades shouldn't show chipping. They were bonded rubber.
Thank you very much! Very interesting, I might try and do a touch up later on them😄🤙🏻
Those watercolor pencils are modeling magic.
100%! Absolutely love them

Nice job, as usual! I always like it when these videos show mistakes & how to deal with the mistake…or not.
Thank you very much for the feedback! Means a lot😄🤙🏻
I don’t understand how you build models so quickly! And the best part about it, there very good

Very nicely done.

Great build dude ,bear metal finish is fantastic something I haven't done yet but it's not one I'm really a fan off lol hence why I haven't done it😂

Thank you very much! Fingers crossed the build goes well. The pencils I used are from a company called Castle😄
Is that a Norwegian squadron aircraft? The decal below the cockpit looks like their national marking.
Superb job on the bare metal finish 👏
I don’t believe it is but someone might have more knowledge! Thanks for the comment😄
It is a Wing Commander's pennant.
Enjoyed this! Can I ask where did you get the model jig?
Glad to hear it! Of course, I bought it from EBMA.😄
Hi Luke. Fabulous job. Can I ask which pencils you bought? Thanks. Paul
Hi Paul! Sure can, I used a brand called Castle.😄
Thanks

Hello mr.mach!thats a nice build you did. Thank you for sharing.keep the Faith. i love your narration. With sticky greetings. Christian
Thank you very much Christian😄😉
P-51 Mustangs have a wooden floor very nice fighter planes. I have Mustangs of my own. RCAF, RAF, USNAVY unique fighter plane.
Thanks Neil!
Wg.Cdr.James "JAS" Storrar's Mustnag KM232 was not P-51D(Mk.IV) but P-51K(Mk.IVA). P-51K fitted with Aeroproducts propeller.
