So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
My teen daughter has been asking for a product to investigate digital drawing and design. Thank you for this review, I think this may be the way to go for her 😊👍
From the reviews I've watched, the iPad Pro is better because of the screen type (sandwiched glass) which gives a better drawing experience apparently. Coupled with the matte screen protector to give a paper texture it the makes it the perfect digital drawing tablet. I noticed in this video when he draws lines, there's a bit of movement of the line as the pen moves. From 2:49 when he moves the pen slowly to draw the circles you can notice it. You might want to get your daughter to try this iPad and the iPad Pro to see how she finds the drawing experience and to see if that same movement occurs.
From what I’ve seen, you won’t know the difference between an iPad and a Pro unless you’ve actually seen both side by side, so this is the way to go if she’s just experimenting with it.
Finally a real review. A respectful review. You CAN draw and paint with procreate with the 6th gen....people automatically assume that just because it’s called the pro that it’s the ultimate tool, I mean it is better but not by much. the 6th gen is great too. You will have to create A LOT of layers to even notice lag. I loved the review, good stuff and very true. The 9.7 is pretty comfortable for me, but I use it for traveling, my pro I use at home.
This is the first time I've even considered an Apple product.. The pen functionality paired with a really good price makes it VERY hard for the competition. Sure, you may give up desktop software you love, but with so many great apps out there (and iPad versions of them), you probably cant beat this deal while mimicking natural drawing (and avoiding headaches with drivers, parallax, jitters etc etc etc) .. I've not used Clip Studio Paint on the iPad so I can't say much. But the desktop version is designed for Comic drawing so it has many brushes and textures created for comics. If your goal is to create comics, it may be a good choice. There's a trial period for testing, after which I believe it is a monthly subscription. If you are not going to be drawing comics most of the time, there are many other good drawing apps with one time payment.
Teoh Yi Chie : thanks for replying sir!😁 Yes, I actually use it on my surface pro and it is an amazingly versitile drawing software whether or not creating comics is the goal. It has many of photoshops abilities but way more focused on actual drawing.. One big thing that sets it apart is a really cool usage of vector graphics that's implemented in a non-complicated fashion.I saw that it was on the iPad and looked really well implemented and not watered down from the desktop version, so I figured I'd ask if you had used it. 😁
Clip Studio Paint isn't just for comics ,all types of Illustration work .I have been using the Free trial version for Ipad Pro and they have done an amazing job ! It is very close to the Full Desktop version ,I just don't like the Sub payment model. Also for painting look at Paintstorm Studio.
I’ve been holding off getting an iPad Pro because of the cost compared to how much I might use it. Your review confirms this iPad is probably the best for my requirements and for lots of others I imagine.
I'm a tech-head so I'm always obsessed with getting the best, most premium device out there regardless of whether or not I need it. Selling my Samsung Chromebook Pro because I want something for notetaking that's more one-handed. I badly want the iPad Pro 2018 but it's so expensive. I'm not an artist. All I would use an iPad for is note-taking during work meetings and writing down checklists. The only other use would be web browsing and watching videos. For $330 I can get this iPad and apple pencil brand new as opposed to a used iPad Pro (2018) and pencil for $730...and that's being optimistic 1) This review was unbiased and honest. No talk of "specs" and really shows off real-world use for people who aren't hardcore video editors, artists or power-users 2) You did an AMAZING job of showing us how great the 1st gen apple pencil still is. Despite some obvious shortcomings (like charging), it's still an amazing piece of hardware. 3) Showing us your matte screen protector was also very well done. Displaying how it can distort colors (although negligible) was a great addition to the review as it is something I would be getting. GREAT WORK Teoh Yi Chie !
I’ve been really wanting an iPad Pro, but can’t afford it at all. Thank you for doing this-I still can’t afford even this less expensive iPad, but it’s good to know that the option to use Apple Pencil with it exists because that’s really important to me! So far, the Apple Pencil is the most responsive stylus I’ve ever used and desperately want to use it more than when I can borrow from a friend or play at the Apple store.
You can wait for the refurbished version. It is typically a six month or so wait. They will appear at the Apple online store for 15% less official retail price.

Sprint is offering the iPad 6 for $4.17/month with upgrade or new mobile phone service I just ordered one when I upgraded my phone today. I use a Wacom Tablet and I am looking forward to trying this out to draw with. (I want a Cintique, but this looks pretty close and I cannot beat the price)

4:55-5:20 I’m not a digital artist but I do know that you can get a matte screen protector to prevent: scratches on screen, it makes it more smooth so your pencil doesn’t start slipping around your screen and ruining the nib and making unwanted marks on the glass of the iPad 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

That's what I'm looking for affordable iPad 6 (2018) and bought it from OWC - MacSales which was giving big discount $269 US - save up to $150!!! Also, bought Apple Pencil (1st generation). Don't buy the other pencil which may give you some erratic behavior - (not straight line - active stylus pen 2021). My wife will be happy to have it for drawing some cartoons soon.
I'm really pleased with my iPad 2018, even with the Hawkee stylus that I'm using at the moment. This is the first time I have tried using a tablet for artwork, before I used a conventional MacBook (or desktop PC) and mouse. I will be upgrading, soon, to the Apple Pencil - for increased accuracy - but at this price point I agree, the iPad18 & Apple Pencil combo is an great value place to begin if you want to draw or paint using a tablet. The quality of the product is terrific. Thank you for the video.
Little update: Got the Apple Pencil for Christmas! Wonderful and the performance difference between that and my original Hawkee stylus is immense. This further improves the creative flexibility of the Pencil/iPad combo!

I got my pencil today and got the iPad 6th gen earlier, so this was helpful. Thank you! Now your daughter is 14 months already and she is probably not sleeping a lot and have started to eat. Perhaps she have taken her first steps by now and she is probably a lot more active, and you have started to see her personality. This is a fun time so enjoy every second of it because before you know it she will start school.

superb tech review. was looking at your other excellent stylus reviews as well. going to get the adonit mark for nintendo switch (mario maker 2 with my son) and use with ipad mini 2. was looking at ipad 6 and new ipad air (better guts) for apple pencil for my son and myself for art. having an art background and still an intuos wacom tablet from years ago for photoshop corel draw etc i knew most stylus and digital tablets were pretty underwhelming for art, provided you were initiated and a long time tech user, even the intuos cintiq and pro tablets are not superior to traditional art, outside of digital workflow. it is nice to see that apple is offering a good quality product especially including the base end in 90% of the functionality. people need to remember buying some stuff doesn’t make you an artist nor does it stop your competency development through other / traditional means. in the west we have a culture of spending to acquire cache. versus working and becoming educated and experienced to attain skill / competency. the big winner for ipad 6 and pencil lowering the barrier to entry is for schools and children. like anything tools are only part of the equation what you do with them matters most. As you are obviously aware. my friend insisted on buying the 256 12.9 pro and the pencil, and all he uses it for is crunchy roll and mobile games. to me i saw the magic of the 6 buy the tablet have the option if the pencil later. to be fair he had the money to burn and wanted the best, but the point remains. hope you and your family are well and i wish you health and happiness especially for your young daughter. My son is 6 now you have to enjoy the work of parenting as the time goes always forwards. edit: thanks for noting the 2gb ram apple does their best to obfuscate some details, and as of 2019 here in canada the air with 64gb base mem is better value for a 3-4+ year tablet user like myself. the other excellent comparison you made was showing two 6s fitting in a 12.9 pro its an important point for artists that want the size without zooming and or for videos etc. i like smaller devices personally like mini 2 iphone se etc but there are always tradeoffs.

Thank you for this honest review. I had been using an iPad 3rd gen for drawing for a while. I think this will be a great option for now until I can afford a pro. You can still create great masterpieces out of almost anything in my opinion.
Every tech youtuber who doesnt do art: if youre an artist, the air gap will bother you. The loud tap and hollow feel is gonna suck for artists. If youre an artist, there is a noticeable distance between the display and apple pencil. If youre an artist, the 60hz will feel so much laggier versus the pro motion on the pro. If youre an artist, graphics and performance are too weak on this ipad, that it probably cant handle visual art workloads. Only if youre an artist, get the ipad pro! This guy, an actual artist youtuber: The response and smoothness is so good. This iPad is great for art. Some people talk about the loud tapping versus the pro, but I dont notice it. Its just so smooth to draw on this! (He actually says this at around 5:00)
I have 3 iPads. My original I use as a clock in my bathroom and to read on when I’m soaking in the tub. My second, the original iPad Pro, I use as a clock in my bedroom and I read on it and play games. My third, iPad Pro 2017, is my main one where I do EVERYTHING! My philosophy is I can never have too many iPads, as long as I have jobs for each one.

I felt like Samsung is getting dumber with their S pen stuff. For some reason they think its a good idea to remove s pen for the 2017 Tab A series. S pen feature is like the main reason why most people buy them for.
Those thin Spens are a bit cramped. I like the Spen that came with my Galaxy Tab s3. I wish iOS ran on that hardware as I find the Apple Pencil tip a bit thick for that size.

I don't know much about animation apps. Research more on the apps you use and see which device supports them, and that would be the devices to consider.
Today I've Ipad pro for my birthday with the pincel... very happy about it EVEN I CAN'T EFFORT it.. i said i am paying for everything that one add it as well. FINALLY SOMETHING FOR ME!!!!
The gap is small and not really noticeable unless you look for it. I don't play games so I can't tell how well it performs. You can look for A9 processor gaming performance videos on other RUclips videos.
It's worth it. If you are only drawing, 32gb should be enough. If you want to download files, videos onto it, install lots of apps, I suggest the 128gb if you have the budget.

I'm pretty sure that's part of the application he is using. It appears to be predictive stroke of some kind.

Just wanted to say, even 3 years later, this is a great review, and helped me made up my mind on what drawing tablet to get on a budget, I was gonna get a Wacom tablet but this seemed way more convenient! Great review!
That's what I'm looking for affordable iPad 6 (2018) and bought it from OWC - MacSales which was giving big discount $269 US - save up to $150!!! Also, bought Apple Pencil (1st generation). Don't buy the other pencil which may give you some erratic behavior - (not straight line - active stylus pen 2021). My wife will be happy to have it for drawing some cartoons soon.
I'm really pleased with my iPad 2018, even with the Hawkee stylus that I'm using at the moment. This is the first time I have tried using a tablet for artwork, before I used a conventional MacBook (or desktop PC) and mouse. I will be upgrading, soon, to the Apple Pencil - for increased accuracy - but at this price point I agree, the iPad18 & Apple Pencil combo is an great value place to begin if you want to draw or paint using a tablet. The quality of the product is terrific. Thank you for the video.
Little update: Got the Apple Pencil for Christmas! Wonderful and the performance difference between that and my original Hawkee stylus is immense. This further improves the creative flexibility of the Pencil/iPad combo!

I got my pencil today and got the iPad 6th gen earlier, so this was helpful. Thank you! Now your daughter is 14 months already and she is probably not sleeping a lot and have started to eat. Perhaps she have taken her first steps by now and she is probably a lot more active, and you have started to see her personality. This is a fun time so enjoy every second of it because before you know it she will start school.

I always recommend people to go for the one with most value for money. Actually the entry level iPads are the one that are most value for money because they are noticeably cheaper

Getting this soon because I didn’t want to spend quite a large amount on a pro and 2nd gen and I’m super excited! I was kind of scared I’d be disappointed in the difference in ability and quality but this seems like it will be great!!

I do a lot of drawing for my work but I don't have a big budget since we pay about 300 more for anything! I just wish I could get the ipad for under 500!! :). How does it work? I've had original ipods, iPod nano, iPod touch, and iPod nano in light pink but got rid of speaker. Is iPad still worth the hype?? I've been looking at chrom books for drawing to replace Amazon kindle hd 8. But now I'm considering an iPad 250$.

superb tech review. was looking at your other excellent stylus reviews as well. going to get the adonit mark for nintendo switch (mario maker 2 with my son) and use with ipad mini 2. was looking at ipad 6 and new ipad air (better guts) for apple pencil for my son and myself for art.
having an art background and still an intuos wacom tablet from years ago for photoshop corel draw etc i knew most stylus and digital tablets were pretty underwhelming for art, provided you were initiated and a long time tech user, even the intuos cintiq and pro tablets are not superior to traditional art, outside of digital workflow.
it is nice to see that apple is offering a good quality product especially including the base end in 90% of the functionality. people need to remember buying some stuff doesn’t make you an artist nor does it stop your competency development through other / traditional means. in the west we have a culture of spending to acquire cache. versus working and becoming educated and experienced to attain skill / competency.
the big winner for ipad 6 and pencil lowering the barrier to entry is for schools and children.
like anything tools are only part of the equation what you do with them matters most. As you are obviously aware.
my friend insisted on buying the 256 12.9 pro and the pencil, and all he uses it for is crunchy roll and mobile games. to me i saw the magic of the 6 buy the tablet have the option if the pencil later. to be fair he had the money to burn and wanted the best, but the point remains.
hope you and your family are well and i wish you health and happiness especially for your young daughter. My son is 6 now you have to enjoy the work of parenting as the time goes always forwards.
edit: thanks for noting the 2gb ram apple does their best to obfuscate some details, and as of 2019 here in canada the air with 64gb base mem is better value for a 3-4+ year tablet user like myself. the other excellent comparison you made was showing two 6s fitting in a 12.9 pro its an important point for artists that want the size without zooming and or for videos etc. i like smaller devices personally like mini 2 iphone se etc but there are always tradeoffs.

The iPad 2018 is really quite snappy. The A10 fusion chip was a large jump over the A9.

Thank you for this honest review. I had been using an iPad 3rd gen for drawing for a while. I think this will be a great option for now until I can afford a pro. You can still create great masterpieces out of almost anything in my opinion.

Every tech youtuber who doesnt do art: if youre an artist, the air gap will bother you. The loud tap and hollow feel is gonna suck for artists. If youre an artist, there is a noticeable distance between the display and apple pencil. If youre an artist, the 60hz will feel so much laggier versus the pro motion on the pro. If youre an artist, graphics and performance are too weak on this ipad, that it probably cant handle visual art workloads. Only if youre an artist, get the ipad pro!
This guy, an actual artist youtuber: The response and smoothness is so good. This iPad is great for art. Some people talk about the loud tapping versus the pro, but I dont notice it. Its just so smooth to draw on this! (He actually says this at around 5:00)

I have 3 iPads. My original I use as a clock in my bathroom and to read on when I’m soaking in the tub. My second, the original iPad Pro, I use as a clock in my bedroom and I read on it and play games. My third, iPad Pro 2017, is my main one where I do EVERYTHING! My philosophy is I can never have too many iPads, as long as I have jobs for each one.

I felt like Samsung is getting dumber with their S pen stuff. For some reason they think its a good idea to remove s pen for the 2017 Tab A series. S pen feature is like the main reason why most people buy them for.

Those thin Spens are a bit cramped. I like the Spen that came with my Galaxy Tab s3. I wish iOS ran on that hardware as I find the Apple Pencil tip a bit thick for that size.

I don't know much about animation apps. Research more on the apps you use and see which device supports them, and that would be the devices to consider.

I’ve tried many alternatives to Apple Pencil but they just don’t perform as well. So Apple Pencil is probably worth getting even if it’s expensive

The gap is small and not really noticeable unless you look for it. I don't play games so I can't tell how well it performs. You can look for A9 processor gaming performance videos on other RUclips videos.

It's worth it. If you are only drawing, 32gb should be enough. If you want to download files, videos onto it, install lots of apps, I suggest the 128gb if you have the budget.
