  • I'm working on my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with the Cummings Diesel and Automatic Transmission.
    I have been having Late shifting and other strange shifting issues.
    The truck has a little over 117k on it.
    Replacing the Governor Solenoid and Sensor Is the Answer to most of the odd shifting troubles with these Dodge Trucks.
    I ordered the parts.
    But the truck took a turn for the worse. It got so bad it wouldn't shift even by coaxing it with the shifter.
    I went ahead and did a fluid and filter change.
    I changed the fluid with atf-4 approved fluid and a filter change (filter is supposed to last the life of the trans, but I changed it anyway)
    This is a pretty easy job if you are afraid of it leaking after just re-use the factory gasket and it wont leak. It'll say to re-use it right on the pan.
    I extracted some of the fluid through the dipstick tube first to make less of a mess.
    Than I added a drain plug to the pan. Not recommended for stump jumpers.
    I wouldn't have done it either but I might need to change the governor solenoid. After viewing Cascades video,I felt I could do it easily.
    My hope was that the partial fluid change would help to free up the sticking components.
    And it was so bad I had to do something while waiting for the parts I had on order.
    The pan was clean inside and only a small amount of fine gray fillings on the magnet the color of a semi metallic brake pad and most likely normal clutch material.
    Fluid and filter did the trick and it started shifting perfectly right away.
    I thought my troubles where over since it now was shifting smoother than it had in quite a while.
    One week later. after sitting for a couple of days it did it again. and this time it seemed more exaggerated. It produced the p0700 code, a general transmission error(No check engine light I just cycled the key for codes)
    You would need a more in depth reader likely only at a dealer or trans shop to further break it down.
    Note: At first this problem didn't throw any codes.
    My parts had arrived and I had a hunch they would do some good. so I installed them.
    This brings us to this video.
    Job Done.
    So far so good it seems to be working as hoped.
    Drives and shifts perfectly.
    It took about 3 weeks of driving with no faults for the system to clear its own code.

    I did the same thing you did because I hand the same issue. I'm not knocking your video. I greatly appreciate the time you invested in making it and posting it. I ended up finding out my shifting cable adjustment was not correct. I am just posting this so maybe it will help the next dodge owner. Thanks again for posting the video great job

      i just found out i have a p0700 code and went under seen my shifter cable will fall off with one finger i guess no bushing left. wife drove it said it would barely go she turned it off and back and shifted fine again wondering if it slipped out and when she moved shifter it caught back in.

    I watched your video and looked up quite a bit of info online and figured this was it. But i took it too a dealer ship and had them do a diagnostic on it. Turns out this is exactly the problem. Will cost 150 for the governor solenoid and 130 for the transducer governor sensor. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    I ordered Borg Warner parts through Cascades Ebay site. I believe they were 95 including shipping for the pair.
    Just type solenoid Borg Warner and you'll see many options.
    Or you can get them through several parts web sites. Key word (pressure solenoid and sensor) Good Luck and I hope it works as well for you as mine did.
    I am still running the trany that more than one shop declared dead.
    I tow heavy loads every week. Shifting great no slips no smells. Cheers

      I changed the solinoid and sensor as shown on youtube and still had the same problem. after careful thought the idea came to me that this is electrical so I went to the fuse box and found a relay marked transmission so I swapped it withe the mirrow heater relay and went for another test drive and everything worked perfectly

    Your the man, thank you very much for taking the time to record this job. My truck is also a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel that has been giving me the intermitent late shifting which usually happens after it's warmed up. I hope this is the same problem with the same fix. I'm headed out right now to check the code on my truck per your video. Thank you again, you really have given me some hope that I won't have to do a transmission rebuild.

  • @sopark434

    It worked perfectly, Only took me 1 hour once I got the parts. I already had the pan off. Too bad dodge gets a bad rap on this, as most people take it to a mechanic and replace the trans or rebuild.

      I know this is a a older video. But will this work for 2009 dodge ram? I was told my torque convertor was bad a year ago but no codes and only delay shift like yours but not as bad. Ps. My shifting is smooth. No jerking. Just delay in 1st & 2 gears, especially at a incline. I was told to do the torque convertor they have to pull tranny and told me cost is 2k

    The grapevine says.
    Any truck built in 2003 is a 48RE. The last 47RE was built December 24th 2002. The only exception to the rule could be the first day or two of 03 where a truck was already past the tranny drop on December 24th but didn't make it to the end of the line before startup January 2nd.

    So i have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 4wd and its not throwing any check engine light codes at all, there is no metal shavings in the pan and their has never been any grinding. It revs very high in 1st gear until i let off on the gas and then it shifts into 3rd so i figured this may be the solution. would the sensor or solenoid throw a light?? Any advice??

    I just want to mention I have a 2004 dodge 2500 2wd and very happy how it shifts my transmission but when it hits the over drive about 45 mph it feels like no matter how much you step on the gas it won't pick up speed it does takes time to start gaining speed. I wonder if the overdrive shift has its own pressure control valve or seleinoid or if the sensors that you change on your truck also makes the overdrive shift strong and it those feels like its strong please let me know if you may have any information that it will help to fix the problem on my truck thank you

    hi greenrumour....we literally drove our 2003 dodge cummins diesel automatic quad cab with around 170,000 km to a body guy to have a bit of work done....drove perfectly...it was there approx. 3 weeks...no rush...when you have time...went to pick it up today...half way home...about 25 miles...it kept "dragging"...down into 1st gear...wouldn't shift up into higher gears...revving at around 2500...seemed to work "ok" once it got into the higher gears...but when we slowed or stopped...it started all over again...did the key cycle...not getting any error message...just "donE" ,,,we are in Canada...so I don't know if our computers work the same as in the states regarding key cycles and error messages...my husband is just about ready to put a match in the tank...do you think this could also be our problem....I was under the impression that if it was your transmission it usually only affected one gear...ie...low gear not high or reverse...we have the same issue if its in reverse...doesn't seem to want to move....

    • @greenrumour
      @greenrumour  10 лет назад

      Hi Judi, Sorry your having trouble with the truck.
      It is very likely the problem is the same. There is also an outside chance the band retaining bolt came off in which case it will likely be laying in the pan when its removed. The parts are easy to change and would be well worth it if it solves the trouble for you. I hope you get back on the road soon.

    • @juligodfrey8657
      @juligodfrey8657 10 лет назад

      greenrumour is it unusual that I don't get any error message when doing the "key cycles"? Just getting the word "doneE" and also just wondering if this problem happens all of a sudden like this or is it gradual? we've had the truck since 2003 not purchased used and there has been no inidication of this before......odd....

    • @greenrumour
      @greenrumour  10 лет назад

      Its not showing any codes logged.That is not unusual if it happened all of a sudden which it does and you stop driving it. It takes readings over time and since it wasn't gradual for you it hasn't had time to log an error.
      Since the issue is caused by grit or debris getting into the sensor and solenoid and gumming it or clogging it can happen intermittently or suddenly.

    • @juligodfrey8657
      @juligodfrey8657 10 лет назад

      greenrumour ok...so....as the story unfolds...I was informed today...oct 21.....that there is no transmission fluid...duh!!...when my husband was driving it home...about 5 miles from where he picked it up...is when the problems started...instead of turning around and going back...he kept going forward...towards home...another 40 miles....!!!!!!!!! omg....I am so furious....I told him all weekend to check the transmission fluid.....the "mechanic" came to our house today ...and the first thing he checked was the fluid level...little to no fluid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also found out that there was sandblasting done on the underbody of the truck..to which the question was asked...do you think that may have caused the leakage in the line...and the answer was...well it might have...but the truck is 10 years old....the lines are wearing....non committal.....how can a truck sit in your yard for a week and you don't notice transmission fluid leaking onto the ground....now what!!!???? could it still be the sensor....how far can a vehicle travel with little to no fluid...and of course...the "mechanic" said today....the transmission might be done.....of course....F**K!!!!!!

    • @greenrumour
      @greenrumour  10 лет назад

      juli godfrey The 48re Transmission takes about 12 quarts of ATF+4 Automatic transmission fluid. It can be off the stick and still have 9 or 10 quarts in it. Not great but still drive-able. If you smell the dip stick it will smell either sweet(good sign but not a guarantee) or foul and burnt(could be critical but not always). compare the scent and color to a new container of ATF+4
      Either way Fix your leak. Check it hot when topping it off. Try it out. If it works great than change the fluid reusing the filter and the pan gasket they are reusable.
      In my opinion, you don't want to flush it. Just drain and fill. While its open do the sensor and solenoid for the the price its just a good idea. If your not confident with your abilities than have a transmission shop service and change the parts on request. Good luck I hope you get it worked out.

    I have a 98 12v with the 47re. The problem I have is the 3-4 shift takes forever. I was going to change my gov pressure solenoid and the transducer but wondering if it'll fix it or if my problem is because I have 3.54 gears with larger 285/70/17 tires. My theory is that since my 12 valve is close to stock hp I think it takes more throttle to move this beast down the road so the tv cable is stretched more causing it to stay in 3rd. As long as i'm going 85 km/hr ( 55mph) the it'll shift to forth ( but I have to let off the pedal slightly) and then seconds later it goes into lock up and she sets sail! I tried adjusting my TV cable by the injection pump and it changes my shift points slightly but doesn't help the late 3-4 shift.
    I know this is an older video but I see these adapter plates from BD Diesel to run the gm style solenoid but then I read all the newer solenoids are gm style/size but they fit right in no adapter needed. Can someone clarify this?
    And yes some 2003 5.9 cummins trucks came with the 47re. I believe it was the 235hp motors had them where as the 305hp motors got the then new 48RE.

    • @greenrumour
      @greenrumour  6 лет назад

      In the video the problem was much more exaggerated than your minor late shift issue. It is likely it won't help your problem and your wheels are probably the culprit. Im running 315 70 17s and have the same shift issues on an incline and only slightly late on the flat. my speedo is off by 5mph at 50 and up

    2005 ram 2500 hard to shift from park to drive. NEED HELP PLEASE

    • @greenrumour
      @greenrumour  6 лет назад

      The system locks the shifter into the PARK position.
      The interlock system is engaged whenever the
      ignition switch is in the LOCK or ACCESSORY position.
      An additional electrically activated feature will
      prevent shifting out of the PARK position unless the
      brake pedal is depressed approximately one-half an
      inch. A magnetic holding device in line with the park
      lock cable is energized when the ignition is in the
      RUN position. When the key is in the RUN position
      and the brake pedal is depressed, the shifter is
      unlocked and will move into any position. The interlock
      system also prevents the ignition switch from
      being turned to the LOCK or ACCESSORY position,
      unless the shifter is fully locked into the PARK position.
      ADJUSTMENTS - BRAKE TRANSMISSION
      SHIFT INTERLOCK
      Correct cable adjustment is important to proper
      interlock operation. The gearshift cable must be correctly
      adjusted in order to shift out of PARK.
      ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
      (1) Remove the steering column trim as necessary
      for access to the brake transmission shift interlock.
      (2) Shift the transmission into the PARK position.
      (3) Pull upward on both the BTSI lock tab and the
      gearshift cable lock tab.
      (4) Verify that the shift lever is in the PARK position.
      (5) Verify positive engagement of the transmission
      park lock by attempting to rotate the propeller shaft.
      The shaft will not rotate when the park lock is
      engaged.
      (6) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Be
      sure ignition key cylinder is in the LOCK position.
      Cable will not adjust correctly in any
      other position.
      (7) Ensure that the cable is free to self-adjust by
      pushing cable rearward and releasing.
      (8) Push the gearshift cable lock tab down until it
      snaps in place.
      (9) Locate the BTSI alignment hole in the bottom
      of the BTSI mechanism between the BTSI lock tab
      and the BTSI connector.
      (10) Move the BTSI assembly up or down on the
      gearshift cable until an appropriate size drill bit can
      be inserted into the alignment hole and through the
      assembly.
      (11) Push the BTSI lock tab down until it snaps
      into place and remove the drill bit.
      (12) Install any steering column trim previously
      removed.
