  • Hello, beautiful people!
Here is the tutorial for the raised rib book spines.
These are quite easy to make and can be used as decorative elements or as actual journal spines.
I began with 1.5mm thick chipboard, cutting a piece at 1 1/2” wide by 8” long. The rib pieces are 1 1/2” wide by 3/8ths of an inch long. If you have a scoreboard, an easy method is to make a mark at every third groove. Alternatively, use a ruler to measure out the ribs. I used the "Tim Holtz rotary trimmer," but scissors work just as well.
To ensure even spacing, I glued down one rib at the top end of the spine, placed three rib pieces as spacers, and glued down my second rib. If you'd like more ribs on your spine, use two ribs as spacers. Once all the ribs were glued, I let it dry for 10 minutes.
Next, I used tissue paper cut into long strips for a textured look. Using white glue (watered down), I glued the tissue onto the spine. Starting at the top, I used a bone folder to ensure the tissue wrapped tightly around the edges of the ribs and worked all the way to the bottom. I wrapped the tissue around the spine, mitered the edges, and glued it to the back. I repeated this process for two layers of tissue on each spine. Allow the glue to dry completely.
For staining, I used "Distress Ink" in "vintage photo" and "tea dye," spraying directly on the spine and using a dauber to blend the ink into all the nooks of the ribs. Repeat the spray stain process until satisfied, and let it dry.
To add shadows, I used the "Distress Ink Pad" in "ground espresso" and dabbed it across the spine, allowing it to dry. For highlights, I used the "Art Alchemy Metallic Wax" in "vintage gold," applying it to my fingertips and gently rubbing it over both the ribs and spaces in between. Let it dry.
Finally, to seal everything up, I used "Distress Micro Glaze." These spines can be used decoratively by gluing them onto boxes or books. Alternatively, they can be utilized as journal spines by gluing the spine onto heavy-weight card stock, cutting about an inch wide on either side, scoring, and mitering the edges. Now the spine has tabs that you can glue a front and back cover onto to create a journal.
