Prepare that fucking speech Roger
Frederick Core I'm still nervous that Hoyte might win 😦
Roger should've won so many times already. Assassination of Jesse James is immaculate!!
Travis Spazz I’m fairly certain he split the vote with himself. No Country for Old Men and Assassination of Jesse James both came out that year and I’m fairly certain that’s why he didn’t win. If he doesn’t win this year, then something is wrong.
He probably has a drawer full of speeches done up from how many times hes been nominated over the years
Oscars are so bland and safe. Will probably give it to Dunkirk.
Wreckless Films I mean, it's not like he wasn't against frigging There Will be Blood or anything
The one and only Roger Deakins. If he doesn't win the Oscar this year, I'm gonna give up on the academy, as if I haven't already.
??
What Mitchell is saying, is that the Academy which decides the Oscars is full of shit. And they are. I gave up on them years ago. And even before I was born, like think about Citizen Kane and then every decade on they fail to give it to the obvious better choice. It's just politics. You can't take them seriously.
I know but don't you sense the contradictions in his statement. all that tells me is that he's going to pay attention to the oscars next year again when one other of his favorites gets nominated so whats the point of bitching, for the sake of bitching? you're right we all know it's politics but we still watch it we gotta admit that.we still care for it, its not as bad as the grammys
Vishal Rana Ya, I'll probably watch it next year as well, but I won't be able to respect most of their decisions if they do it for a horrendous political statement. Roger Deakins is simply the best choice this year, and of previous years, with respect of the others.
I totally agree.. This man is the master! He's been involved with some of the greatest movies ever made and still they won't give him that damn prize.. 😑
He absolutely deserves the Oscar in 2018. I mean, C'mon! He is one of the truly greatest of Cinematographers.
To be honest I think the Academy is now so aware of how badly they have neglected Deakins over the years that he would win an Oscar just for uploading a mobile phone vid to RUclips. He is SO overdue.
God, he was nominated 13 times and didn't win any of them and people get nervous about Mr.DiCaprio
Biggest , most well liked and bankable movie star for the past 20 years versus a cinematographer .
Thomas Thas I didn't say any Shit about DiCaprio , it's about how Hollywood ignores everyone who worked so hard to do their best and just shows us the actors as everything in that project
And the audience as well
@@THOMAS2910able he's good at screaming and not much else
@Carlos Saraiva I actually agree, prisoners is one of my favorites purely because of his work.
@@appleslover you mentioned Dicaprio in your comment...
HR staff: "you tell Roger Deakins his jacket's rustling"
"no, you tell him"
"no you"
*ROLLING*
best/most underapreciated coment of 2018
And the Oscar goes to...
Eisa Alhabib if so it be about blooming time
you
Eisa Alhabib nope.
Film or digital, Blade Runner 2049 is still awesome. That proves Roger Deakins' versatility and that he is beyond this endless debate...
Claresta Tantra agree with this. It’s all how you compose what the camera sees
His mantlepiece should be groaning under the weight of awards. Man's a genius.
Christopher Nolan will never want to work with him what a shame!
Carlos Saraiva, the question is, does he want to return to film, which is the inferior medium between the two, as Deakins has helped to prove.
Fun fact: Roger Deakins and Thomas Newman both got their first nominations for The Shawshank Redemption. Roger has been nominated 13 times and never won. Thomas has been nominated 14 times and never won.
Fuck the oscars!
Sorry. I'm not attracted to small, hard statuettes. I prefer adult human flesh-and-blood females around 6 feet tall.
@@philipclayberg4928 lmaooooo
Also they both worked on skyfall which in my opinion is the best bond film .
I think it's safe to assume 2049 will deliver this master his Oscar, finally!
While he does deserve it, this is the Oscars we're talking about. They didn't even put Denis on the ballot for best director, never mind putting this film up for best picture which it was at least deserving of that. And then they nominated the fucking boss baby for best animated film at which point I checked RIGHT THE FUCK OUT of ever watching the Oscars again.
If this gets snubbed at the Oscars it would be the biggest joke of all time.
Luke Koebele Deakins definitely deserves it, but I won’t be mad if they gave it to Van Hoytema
That an Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler
At 1:59 the picture of Jordan Cronenweth is actually a picture of Ridley Scott... I can't wait to see the whole length video! I love this roundtable conversations. I hope Roger Deakins got the oscar, he is bloody deserve it!
Aahahaha, I had to pause to check that out. You're right,
I love how down to earth and humble he is what a guy
He looks like he has achieved enlightenment. Everyone is so in awe of him
Blade Runner 2049 was beautiful
The best cinematographer of all time
says people who don't watch lot of films. Every great cinematographer has their own eyes and vision so you can't compare them. He can be your favourite tho and I like Deakins work. A true master at his craft.
Axxonn also Alcott, Almendros, Burks, Cardiff, Chapman, Coutard, Delli Colli and so on
No mention of Lubezki?
Axxonn he’s one of the best would be the proper context
Hurry Calls levezki still got some years on his belt to truly awe us like Deakins did
Deakins did an incredible job, deserves more recognition.
Kamilla Oliveira you mean like an oscar nomination lmao
14 Oscar nominations (including 2049). 0 wins. It’s his this year. Enough is enough. The best cinematographer of all time.
Well he is the most famous cinematographer on the planet.
But yeah, he's awesome.
You can tell every other DP in that room is in awe of him.
John Sailors I mean Janusz Kaminski and Robert Elswit are probably the only ones there who can truly rival him in career but he is the most nominated out of them. Janusz only won for Private Ryan and Schindler List and Elswit only one for There will be blood which best out No country for old men somehow. The last 12-13 films Deakins shot was nominated now that’s criminal
The guy on the black and white image its Ridley Scott, not Jordan Cronenweth
Yeah that was really funny
I think this year's strongest contender will be roger deakins and hoyte van hoytema
Roger create a beautiful futuristic visual environment, something that he never did before. And hoyte also gives us a majestic 40's cinematography in dunkirk
I hope the oscars will give a tie result for both of them
dark jedi I love Hoyte very much as well his camera work in Her, Spectre and Interstellar as well as Dunkirk is worth admission alone but Deakins most definitely deserves it, because I feel like DP wise 2049 is his magnum opus. His first sci fi film that is t just a loud visuals over substance movie, each shot compliments the film/story in some way. The seamless mesh of visual effects and cinematography. He honored the lighting of the original film but worked it into his craft and goes against his usual lighting patterns to deliver the best looking film of his career. 13 nominations he needs the win this time!
Desire Released fully agree. To bad these two have to compete in same year. Because hoyte also deserve oscars too
But roger's work in blade runner is such a masterpiece of cinematography on a sci-fi film. And how he control the lighting layer is phenomenal (niander wallace office scene)
Why is the music so much louder than the actual interview? Horrible.
Thomas Newman and Roger Deakins - two people who have been absurdly overlooked by the Academy, despite delivering the most important work in their respective fields over the last twenty years.
@1:58 that's a photo of Ridley Scott, not Jordan Cronenweth. Getty Images (Stanely Bielecki Movie Collection) have mislabelled the photo, so maybe an easy mistake to make.
Deakins was inspired to do the orange desert scene from our 2009 huge dust storm here in Australia. I was in it & the comparison is incredible!
Give him the Oscar for fuck sakes!!
I've never seen more beautifully shot film than Blade Runner 2049! I really fell into nirvana and I couldn't believe, that a movie could make me feel like that
Blade Runner is a benchmark in every visual way. Roger better finally get that damn trophy.
So annoying with the music interludes here 3 times the volume of the interview!
Are the full versions of these interviews going to be posted eventually?
Omar Correa probably after the oscars
January 21
First one has just been uploaded so probably soon for the rest of them.
That Jordan Cronenweth at 1:57 looks more like Ridely Scott
The team at Hollywood Reporter should be paying attention. When Roger Deakins mentions Jordan Cronenweth, the picture shown (1:57 minute mark) is that of Ridley Scott not Cronenweth.
Master Deakins.
Not just the coolest cinematographer probably the coolest human being. master at his work.
That was a picture of Ridley Scott looking through the camera eye piece, not Jordan Cronenweth (!).
Is there a full version of this somewhere? Would love to see a minimally edited version of this roundtable.
Those musical interludes will blow your eardrums out!!
This man is so humble.. easily one of the best cinematographers of all time.
i could watch him talk about his process for this film for hours
Skong Island's photographer should in this table too.
That movie looked amazing
I think that Jordan Cronenweth picture is actually Ridley Scott...
@4:24 Kaminski probably thinking "Shooting clean is great but I still like my diffusion filters"...
1:57 : That's Ridley Scott. Not Jordan Cronenweth.
That is one hell of a fucking roundtable.
the noise in the shadows on this is serious irony
And the Oscar goes to... ROGER DEAKINS!!!
this guy has been nominated for 14 times! my personal fav was Sicario. the night time looked glorious
The guy at 2:51 is thinking to himself “I am looking at the greatest cinematographer of all time, and yet he makes everything sound very simple.”
GUYS. We all want Deakins to get the Oscar but DON'T JINX IT. We've thought he's going to win 13 times before and look how well that turned out.
I know I'm not being the most original commentor for saying this, but Deacons absolutely deserves an Oscar for 'Blade Runner 2049"
Check your audio levels. Music is way louder than the voice track.
I️ don’t know what it is but this guy reminds me of jimmy Paige.
That's a picture of Ridley Scott, not Jordan Cronenweth.
Music at 2:00 is way louder than the dialog. Thank you for damaging my hearing, that's very professional of you.
FINALLY!
1:57 isn't that Ridley Scott?
...the picture shows Ridley Scott, not Jordan Cronenweth....
he deserves the oscar...hands down..
I'd love to sit down with this guy and just gush about his work.
While they were recording this, he was probably thinking, "Omg this lighting is so bad, and that camera lady is moving too fast... Terrible."
He looks like someone out of a British rock band from the 60s or 70s.
What the heck?!? "In Time" was shot by Deakins?
I've got to watch that movie again..
1:56 Thats not Jordan Cronenweth... It's Ridley Scott! Haha
Such an incredible movie to just look at
The music bridges throughout are much louder than the rest of the audio.
Lol I like how Hoyt and Janusz kind of felt uncomfortable when Deakins mentioned shooting digitally lol u can tell they wanted to be like "wait wait hold up"
Give Roger his Oscar!! Leo has one, Now it's Roger's turn!
FINALLY! THE LEGEND!
When he says that the colours were done 'in-camera' does that mean there was no grading process?
That's a picture of Ridley Scott, guys. Not Jordan Cronenweth.
01:58 Thats Ridley Scott and not Jordan Cronenweth
Wheres the full DP roundtable??
could someone enlighten me on how these videos are taken? i mean in the show. i'm sure they don't re-take any shots. how come they can hide the cameras and the crew? since they show it in different angles whilst the person is talking. is it post edit? if yes, what do they do? just color fade the cameras and crew?
that still that's used of jordan cronenweth is not jordon cronenworth, it's ridley scott.
Master of 32mm lenses..Deakings love you..
Here's the rule: you don't capitalize prepositions or articles unless they're the first word in the title. The rule isn't that you just don't capitalize words that are two letters. The American educational system has failed us completely.
Sorry but the picture of Jordan Cronenweth is actually a picture of Ridley Scott! haha
Dear THR editor,
THE MUSIC IS WAY TOO FUCKING LOUD!!! Pay attention to the damn levels man. It's either my ears get blown out from the music and I hear the interview properly or I hear the music properly and the interview is barely audible. PLEASE get a sound guy, or just drop the music -10dB.
🤨 That volume level... Are you professional or not?
Ente de ficción i get a little Bale Rant Vibe
Ha, ha, ha! That's right.
Seriously.
I'm an amateur and I could have done better.
notice them using capture 1 for the pics
Crazy how a guy so twitchy and clearly nervous always manages to do what he does. He deserves an Oscar just off that let alone the beautiful work he does
the master himself
Academy Awards: Achievement in Cinematography- Roger Deakins 14 nominations= 1 win.
If you want an Oscar, work with Denis!
Yup. Either Denis Villeneuve or Alejandro G. Iñarritu, or Alfonso Cuaron
So glad he won the oscar
Roger fucking deakings enough said. He should of won for Fargo years ago. But this time he has to win the Oscar for best cinematography
What a flex...
Roger: "yeah I shoot digital now, no I haven't changed my technique. ever. also, color grading is captured in-camera."
The only movie that can compare cinematically is perhaps Dunkirk, but I really think he might win it this time
3:04 oh
Jesus Christ, if this isn't eerie enough, Roger here is a spitting image of Jordan Cronenweth, the original DP.
"I was just like, trolling the web like." - Rodger Deakins 1/14/2018
What an amazing masterpiexe
Such a cool dude. 🏅🏆🎖
He is the Brando of cinematographers
i love him so much ❤️
such a good movie!
If he doesn’t win the Oscar...it is a travesty. It is not “give” him an Oscar, it is “why hasn’t he already gotten Oscars (plural)?
TURN THE DAMN INTERLUDE MUSIC DOWN!!! FREAKING BLASTING EARDRUMS IF YOU'RE WEARING EARBUDS!!!!!!!
Wtf is wrong with the audio on this video?
O god roger please do cinematography for "Dune" remake
he is busy
That's my one worry on dune. Of the directors I'm aware of villeneuve is the best choice but without deakins I'm not sure if we will have as good of a film
He's like a cross between Richard Branson and Keith Richards!
1:22 Whhhat? Blurred out the statues. Silly.
