  • An incredibly beautiful voice! My favourite version of this famous aria! The curtain rises on a frozen landscape at dawn. A lone figure is waiting for his closest friend, whom the previous night he challenged to a duel. This is the landowner and poet Vladimir Lensky, and, as he sits waiting for Eugene Onegin, he meditates on what will happen to him, with a premonition of his death.
This video is an extract from live stage performance. Chechen by blood, Sultan Baisultanov grew up In Kazakhstan and was graduated in Russia (Leningrad Conservatory). Не spent all his life working in Almaty Opera Theatre. Much loved by his devoted audience, Sultan sung all the leading tenor parts from the world’s most famous operas. Unfortunately there are no proper recordings of him, as being Chechen he “didn’t belong” and wasn’t properly promoted during his 30 years career. I used to know him personally. He was a wonderful man. Very charming and kind, always making jokes, cheering others. He had this light, and sunny personality and wonderful warm sense of humour. He considered himself a very happy man as he was lucky to do what he liked in life best - singing. Sadly he is no longer with us and we miss him a lot.
