    Oblivion has many flaws, like the leveling system and the combat, but it is a truly special game, there's no other game that gives quite the same feeling. Bethesda used to have the ability to make a game better than the sum of it's parts, hopefully they can make a game like that again someday. Great video man, I enjoyed hearing your perspective!

    • @ratedjentertainment
      @ratedjentertainment  16 дней назад +1

      Oh yeah! It’s for sure got flaws and annoyances. The level scaling is broken beyond broken. Skyrim was a step forward and a few steps backwards in a lot of way. But the level scaling wasn’t one of them.
      I’ve always been able to overlook the flaws in Elder Scrolls games because of the immense sentimental value this series has to me. I can handle bugs, glitches, and flaws because the good moments of these games got me through difficult times in childhood.

    What a wonderful video, excellently done! I was smiling through the whole thing, as it reminded me of my own long history growing up with the Elderscrolls games, and it being one of many things that bonded me and my older brother.
    It inspired our storytelling and creativity, it was a subject that I loved to draw, and we'd spend countless hours coming up with our own lore based in the canon. Years down the road, my best friend (Who later became my sister in law via marrying said brother) joined us in our love of Oblivion and eventually Skyrim. My first exposure to Morrowind was, interestingly enough, my *mom* playing and beating it after she bought it. We're a family of gaming nerds who are also really into creativity, and the elderscrolls series has been such a huge part of that. It makes me so glad to know we are far from the only ones who hold it near to our hearts :)

    12:30 regarding the npcs and their ironic beauty. I had this thought a week ago after "finishing" a replay of Skyrim. I think the NPCs in oblivion had exceptional voice actors and some of the writing was more fun and expressive when compared to the nordic "honor and glory" shtick and morrowinds greater use of voiceless NPCs. In Oblivion,like yeah their physics are broken, but in interactions theyre almost aware of the fact.

    • @ratedjentertainment

      Oblivion's townsfolk are far superior to Skyrim's in every way. I can only go to so many cities and villages in Skyrim and hear "Hello" "Yes" "What do you want?" and "Hm" so many times before it drives me crazy. At least the majority of Oblivion NPCs at least had one or 2 interesting lines that gave them some life and personality.

    Really resonated with this video. I also grew up too poor for gaming despite loving games due to having a friend whose dad was a big PC gamer, who got me into RTS games like age of empires and StarCraft, along with battlefield 1942 and Vietnam, along with text based dnd games. That same friend has morrowind on Xbox which I loved despite being 7 and both terrible at the game and scared of it at times. I grew up in southwest Florida, after my parents moved there from Michigan. I rediscovered morrowind a few years ago after getting into ttrpgs and more complex crpgs, and recently picked up oblivion. Been having a blast with my good daedra worshipping, former morag tong, dunmer monk. Seeing as I’ve played Morrowind and Skyrim, it felt like time to try the elder scrolls game I missed out on. I already immediately enjoy many aspects of it better than Skyrim, especially the ability to specialize in unarmed combat, which few games outside this one and new Vegas let you do. I also enjoy the many rpg mechanics which were stripped from Skyrim. I adore how ES3 and 4 have great movement mechanics by manipulating speed and acrobatics, and I love hopping around like a maniac. Can’t wait to get the boots of spring heel Jack!

    I think oblivion is really underated, mostly people hating its leveling and combat. Still I think its a great game and should get more love even if Todd went crazy with Lotr style lol.
    Also I did not get many games as a kid as my mom had no money. I still remember my cousing gifting me his extra copy of Oblivion and being blown away by the world, art and the style of the game. I remember reading the manual over and over again and even learning english just to understand the game better, even with my dyslexia haha.

      A lot of the Elder Scrolls community I see is a majority being Skyrim fans, a minority being strictly Morrowind fans, and a very small minority just being the Daggerfall community. Oblivion has always been this middle child of a game that I feel is constantly and unfairly overlooked. Because I think it is a fantastic game, top to bottom.
      I understand the second part of your comment, I grew up very poor myself. But your cousin gifting you a copy of Oblivion is an amazing thing. I didn't get my own copy of Oblivion until many years later, I too read that game manual over and over and over when I was younger. I wish games still did that. Those manuals with the lore and everything were so cool. Sadly an amazing piece of art that is lost these days.

    The first time I tried Oblivion, I really, really didn't like it. Coming into it from Skyrim is quite the challenge, and I just didn't click with it like I thought I would. I got to around level 7 and decided that was enough for me to figure out I just heavily preferred Skyrim.
    Well, this year I decided to buy it for PS3 again and give it another chance because it came with the map of Cyrodiil and the Knights of the Nine poster. I don't know what changed. I really dont. I'm absolutely in love with this game. Once I got past the atrocious leveling system and jankiness of the combat I learned to REALLY appreciate Oblivion. First think I did was to quit being anxious over how to level correctly and keep in pace with the leveled world and just adjust that difficulty slider when it got too hard. After that, I just did what I did in my first playthrough in Skyrim all those years ago and just started dungeon crawling and visiting small settlements looking for quests roleplaying as an Imperial Holy Knight.
    Well, I'll keep the comment short, but I'm ecstatic about this game now. Borderline obsessed. The exploration, the cities, the lore, the look and feel of it all. I don't have the time to go into the detail of what makes Oblivion so special. I am JUST AS in love now with the world of Cyrodiil now as with Skyrim's.
    It's just breathtaking how deep everything was before Skyrim too, from the mechanics to the world itself. I, I can actually role-play now. Im not a prophesized OP Dragonborn and don't have to keep that in mind with my head cannon on my characters now.
    Cyrodiil being surrounded by all the other provinces has it's advantages too, making it's environments so varied and mix flawlessly with eachother.
    The cities are my favorite part. Every, single, city looks and feels different. Some are a little bit on the smaller side, but also beautiful like Leyawiin and Chorrol. Others are HUGE like Skiingrad, which just about dwarfs every city in Skyrim. Then, there's the magnum opus, The Imperial City. The ultimate quest hub. It's perfect.
    I can't ramble on any longer, but out of all games I decided to give a second chance on, I'm so glad I gave this one a second shot. It sure deserved it, and I get to experience it all as a newbie too.
    Loved this video by the way. I agree with just about everything 👍

    • @ratedjentertainment
      @ratedjentertainment  10 дней назад +1

      I am glad you decided to give it a second chance, truly. Cyrodiil is absolutely filled to the brim with great quests and the NPCs have just enough character to them to impart a sense of personality that NPCs in Skyrim just don’t have.
      How have you found the experience playing this game on Playstation? I’ve never played a TES game on PlayStation before.

    • @Firealone9
      @Firealone9 9 дней назад +1

      @@ratedjentertainment Well, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, and Oblivion are all definitely at their worst on PS3. It's the console I've played them all on with thousands of hours of experience and it's always the same story. Awful framerate with frequent stuttering throughout with all the games. It takes some getting used to, but I'd still say the experience remains in tact to enjoy them. In all the games, especially Skyrim even with the Legendary patch the world will actively start destabilizing around you after around 100 to 140 hours of a playthrough so regardless of level that's when it's time to start a new character. This goes for all the games. You know when it happens because more and more things start breaking like NPCs can't path correctly anymore, mad texture pop in, and quests start bricking everywhere. New Vegas comes in a close second to Skyrim here.
      Disabling all autosaves is the tried and true way to extend the life of a playthrough. As well as overwriting the same manual save instead of keeping multiple saves. This is a must for all the games on PS3.
      So far right now I have a 60 hour playthrough in on Oblivion with both main DLCs installed and it's fairing pretty well. I'd say Skyrim had better overall performance at this point, but Skyrim also had multiple freezes and a few broken quests where Oblivion has chugged right along with no broken quests as of yet.
      Some people might find it unplayable on PS3, but as a veteran with these games on the system I think it's totally playable and I think will fair better in the long run when compared to the other Bethesda games. Sucks I still play the games on PS3, but I plan on getting a Series X soon anyways to get close to the PC experience of them.
      I'd rate them from best to worst performance like this on PlayStation
      1. Fallout 3 (Actually pretty decent port from 360. Not that bad.)
      2. Oblivion with DLC (Nothing ruining my enjoyment so far! Totally playable)
      3. Skyrim with DLC (Infamous for freezing and destabilizing in time, but performance is pretty decent throughout)
      4. New Vegas (Have to babysit the game to get it to be stable for a whole playthrough. Complete edition with DLCs is 110% broken. Base game is playable enough.)
      I legit encourage you to find a copy or two of these games to try on PS3. It's really enlightening for sure! If people think the 360 was bad, they haven't tried them on PS3.

    You can make more than 1 character so, IMO it shallows the experience of a playthrough knowing that you've already done everything before because you can with any character and you'll probably be doing it exactly the same way because it's been designed to be so easy or so simple that any character of any build can pull it off. It's one of Bethesda's biggest weak points as a studio. They don't trust the player to play the game without a handhold and training wheels.

    • @ratedjentertainment
      @ratedjentertainment  13 дней назад

      Yeah, I touched on that a little bit. It’s like I said, I understand not wanting to gate content off to players because maybe someone doesn’t want to make another character, but what I liked in Morrowind was you couldn’t join every faction.
      Sometimes you’d have to start a new character if you wanted to experience a different quest line, and that’s a good thing.

    Morrowinds my favourite but i think Oblivion is the best. If you combine gameplay with roleplay mechanics, Oblivion overall wins over all other Elderscrolls games.

    • @ratedjentertainment
      @ratedjentertainment  13 дней назад +1

      I am hesitant to agree, but Oblivion in terms of gameplay was a marked improvement over Morrowind, but man, Morrowind's world and story were truly next level.

    • @Teabagsforlife
      @Teabagsforlife 13 дней назад +1

      @@ratedjentertainment oh yeah, that's why Morrowind is my favourite. It's a pure RPG. Bit if you were grading Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim on certain categories out of 10. Overall Oblivion would win.
      For example, Oblivion has the best Guild system. Morrowind has more guilds but it's not as well handled as in Oblivion and the less said about Skyrim's guild system, all the better 😂

    • @ratedjentertainment
      @ratedjentertainment  13 дней назад +1

      @@Teabagsforlife well, I agree and disagree here. I think Oblivion’s guilds are supreme stories and narratives, but the Factions in Morrowind have more depth than you may think.
      Now I won’t go into too much detail on a comment, because I assume you already about Morrowind’s factions and I don’t wanna seem like I’m talking down to you.
      But I’d encourage you to head back to Vvardenfell and try out something like House Telvanni.

    • @Teabagsforlife
      @Teabagsforlife 13 дней назад +1

      @@ratedjentertainment I was talking about the ranking system and progression. In Oblivion it feels like you are actually in a Guild that you are progressing through and that your actions have weight.
      The way you are sent to different guild halls once you out rank the guild hall leader and how the interactions change with guild members to reflect your new rank. It's more immersive.
      There's more going on in Morrowind but it doesn't feel as immersive. But at the same time you can get lost in Morrowind, which makes the game overall more immersive than Oblivion.

    Epic. Fuckin'. Game. I would damn near any it was damn near perfection. It was hard, it was work, it was hilarious, it was weird, it was corny, it was work. Skyrim was great but it was such a downgrade. Disappointing. Oblivion is still to this day a playable experience and even better with a blunt.
