The driver really said “there is a state law that defines bikes as motorist therefore he’s not a pedestrian” while also somehow ignoring the giant sign that says state law must stop for pedestrians and bikes. Interesting

The driver really printed out a website and said, "I have the state law for bicyclists for what they have to obey by, what the law is." I don't know what he brought but I'm sure "Allow a truck to run over them" isn't on the sheet.

How to win a case with Judge Judy. *NEVER* disagree, if she's not understanding, keep agreeing and talking until she gets it. She's OLD but super smart, eventually she'll understand. Just don't make her mad. It would've been really simple to go "This particular area has very high-volume bike traffic so it was made law that certain crosswalks, including this one, are also lawfully used for cyclists." But in the heat of the moment I get that he couldn't just come out and say that.
Still though, such a classic case. the non-idiot, cordial, prepared person won. Love JJ
We do not need rules in every situation. Anytime, anywhere, when you're dealing with any confrontation, it is never justified to hit or hurt another human being.

They need to get rid of those “bicycles are vehicles” laws, I’ve never met someone who had to get a license or pay registration for a little ol bicycle.
It has more to do with litigation and legal jargon. A bicycle is a vehicle because it is powered by a person. That’s why most jurisdictions require bicycles to be walked across a crosswalk, and why it’s illegal to ride on the sidewalk; legally, you cannot traverse a crosswalk as a vehicle. Bikes move fast compared to a pedestrian.
It’s similar to how guardrail is the incorrect term for guiderails. “Guard” implies the barrier is guarding a person from injury/accident/etc.

@m rapacki @Poop Brain I get that but wonder if and how fast you can bail out and get them off if you need to. Do they have a quick release / safety breakaway straps or similar? I'm thinking something along the lines like stirrups that open when riders fall so it's clean and they don't end up caught or entangled and dragged behind a bolting horse. Cyclists are already at risk with little in the way of protection so being potentially dragged under a bus or truck with a bike you're physically fixed onto is horrifying to me.
@m rapacki Yeah I get what you mean now. My brain is wired to think of it in a similar way to horse riding and how even with safety stirrups you can still get caught up and dragged along behind like a John Wayne stunt double. I think what he was referring to was that there were probably straps on his bike pedals that he slips his feet into like the straps on sandals.

JJ didn’t really understand what the plaintiff was saying at first. There is a bike lane parallel to the street. Then, separately, there is a trail running perpendicular to the street than intersects the street. That is also designated for cyclists. We have one in area known as The Legacy Trail that runs through 4 cities. You do not have to walk your bike across intersecting streets.
I saw she wasn't getting it, too. I looked it up, it's in Minneapolis, called the Midtown Greenway. Neat that they make old railroads into paths.

Some cyclist may act entitled but to people with cars who ignore pedestrians and bikes literally kill people all the time. To think im gonna keep going the cyclist or pedestrians should watch out for me cause im in car is selfish and a great way to cause an accident and kill someone considering how easily cars can do that
only western country is dumb like you to prioritize the responsibility to the car driver. Even if the law is helping you as a pedestrian/bikes, in asia people are smart enough to always slow down and check ...and they just yield to cars most of the time. Bikes are a real problem in crosswalks. I literally get anxiety when I’m driving through a Ped/Bike crosswalk. It’s like bikers come out of nowhere.

Interesting case, in the Netherlands you must get off your bike to cross the zebra crossing if you want cars to stop for you. If you do not then they do not have to stop for you.

The law that makes cyclist not pedestrians only applies when they are on the street, not on a bike path.
Common sense is to get off the bike & walk it across the CROSS WALK.
There is a bike path where I live that crosses streets and there are no signs indicating that where the bike trail crosses the road it is a crosswalk. Everyone just rides their bike through it. Maybe I am wrong though.
