- The contralto Kathleen Ferrier age 41 years died following a long illness against cancer.
Her death came as a terrible shock to her many admirers.
Here is 'Klever Kaff' singing Schubert's An die Musik.
Sung in German.
English Translation:
...........To Music.........
You, noble Art, in how many grey hours,
When life's mad tumult wraps around me,
Have you kindled my heart to warm love,
Have you transported me into a better world,
Transported into a better world!
Often has a sigh flowing out from your harp,
A sweet, divine harmony from you
Unlocked to me the heaven of better times,
You, noble Art, I thank you for it!
You, noble Art, I thank you!

Short extract from Wikipedia:-
"Shortly after Ferrier's death an appeal was launched by Sir John Barbirolli, Bruno Walter, Myra Hess and others, to establish a cancer research fund in Ferrier's name.
Donations were received from all over the world.
To publicise the fund a special concert was given at the Royal Festival Hall on 7 May 1954, at which Barbirolli and Walter shared the conducting duties without payment.
The Kathleen Ferrier Cancer Research Fund helped establish the Kathleen Ferrier Chair of Clinical Oncology at University College Hospital,London in 1984.
As the result of a separate appeal, augmented by the sales proceeds of a memoir edited by Neville Cardus, the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to encourage young British and Commonwealth singers."
In the Queen's New Year's Honours List of 1953 Kathleen Ferrier was awarded the CBE.
The Royal Philharmonic Society, in the summer of 1953 awarded her their Gold Medal.
Much has been written about Kathleen Ferrier with many of her recordings placed on RUclips, so I shall just quote the American contralto Marian Anderson:
"What a face----- and what a voice!"
Among the many tributes from her colleagues, that of the conductor Bruno Walter has been highlighted by biographers:
"THE GREATEST THING IN MUSIC IN MY LIFE HAS BEEN TO HAVE KNOWN KATHLEEN FERRIER AND GUSTAV MAHLER.... IN THAT ORDER."

The voice of Kathleen makes my heart ache. I am Eighty years old and knew her story from my School days. Its so sad that people these days have never heard of this Beautiful Lady. We should be proud of her.
I am also eighty. My father loved her and had two recordings of her that he played often. Listening to this brings back a world.
Such a beautiful, pure voice. Absolutely perfect for me. Why are soprano voices prized so much when a contralto voice such as hers has so much richness of tone and beauty?
And not only for you.
I usually prefer this song at a livelier pace, but oh how beautiful is this! No other singer I know of brings as much heartfelt love for music as Kathleen Ferrier does to this performance. I feel that it expresses best what Schubert felt himself.
I was brought up in Scotland, hearing my Mum sing Blow the Wind Southerly while washing the dishes. She LOVED Kathleen Ferrier...as do I.
What a lovely memory.
On the edge of tears. Too young to go.
Schubert and K. Ferrier, just a miracle of wonder.
I find this a haunting rendition, it is almost as if Shubert had written the music for Kathleen.
One of the greatest voices of all times
Голос и мкзыкальность совершенны.
She has the same eyes as my mother....And what a voice!
What a treasure we lost with the death of K.F. Her voice was heartbreakingly beautiful. RIP and thank you for our memories.
There is something unique about this song, and this singer.
Oh Lord, how gorgeous
The most beautiful contralto voice.
The Queen of us Contralto singers
Eine der größten Stimmen auf Erden - bis heute unvergessen! * One of the greatest voices on earth - unforgotten until today!
Sublime singing of such a soulful song.
This precious soul will be singing with the angels.
Even then they will fall silent at the sound of this utterly divine voice.
How blessed are we to be able to still hear her and be joyful.
Beautifully expressed. .Thank you.
Totally agree with your opinion on Kathleen.I believe the accompanist has an unbelievable touch to his instrument also.
How very true.
A genius, how we miss her, and such a beautiful lovely lady.
Kathleen Ferrier's tone voice alone opens up a world, exploring words and loading it with weight and infinite meaning.
Over everything you could listen to, beyond any emotion. Angels are blessed to have her with them!!
Her phrasing is impeccable !! Beautiful ending .
A unique voice. Her lower register brings me to tears.
Possibly the greatest singer Britain has ever produced..
Definitely agree. The finest Contralto in recorded memory! An inspiration to Dame Janet Baker and Elizabeth Schwartskoff!
Words cannot adequately describe her uniquely beautiful voice. Much better listening than modern screeching Sopranos!

The low notes make you shiver.
La plus grande contralto de tous les temps. Merveilleuse Katleen...je vous admire vous avez tout donné y compris votre vie à votre art....BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO
Apparently, Herbert Von Karajan cried after conducting one of her performances.
Sublime.
In Opera, sopranos get the most memorable Melodie’s to sing, but in Leider everyone sings the same Melodie’s in different keys.
Beautiful voice
Wonderful! We named a daughter after her and she has a lovely voice.
What a beautiful voice ❤️.
The notes are droplets of gold!
Kathleen Ferrier !!! Her power to transmit emotions with a rare musical intelligence is truly and solely UNIQUE. She expresses the music with a lasting impression as "two spheres (music-words and emotions)" are united in one. Her magnetism and her direct immediate contact with the listener are a climax never reached before her. She reveals each time that she sings, music, if we hear it for the first time (Bach, Gluck, Schumann etc...). Thank you for posting this video.
... rare musical intelligence.. thank you! exact wording... Still keep my original vinyl...
Walter Brune called Kathleen Ferrier the greatest artist of the 20th century.
Bruno Walter once said the he was privileged to have known Kathleen Ferrier and Gustav Mahler IN THAT ORDER!
Her phrasing & feelings are of a quality above any other singer that I recall, just wished I were knowledgeable in german to relish in all she's putting into this text.
What a beautiful voice! And magnificent legato!
For 60 years I've been on the look-out for her equal, not yet found.
The perfect female voice for this masterpiece!
Lyrics translated in English ⤵️
To the music
You lovely art
in how many gray hours,
Where I was stricken by life
You ignited my heart for warm love,
You brought me to a better world,
Brought me to a better world
Often a sigh, that left your harp,
A sweet, holy chord from you,
Has shown me the existence
of a better time
You lovely art, I thank you for it,
You lovely art, I thank you
Thank God for recordings!.Thanks to modern technology, our great artists will be with us always.
Wunderbar
That was mesmerizing. "You, noble Art, in how many grey hours . . . Have you transported me into a better world . . ."
her live recording of Gluck at Amsterdam in 1946 is world class. It might be equaled but will not be bettered.
By Franz von Schober (1796-1882)
Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,
Wo mich des Lebens wilder Kreis umstrickt,
Hast du mein Herz zu warmer Lieb entzunden,
Hast mich in eine beßre Welt entrückt!
Oft hat ein Seufzer, deiner Harf' entflossen,
Ein süßer, heiliger Akkord von dir
Den Himmel beßrer Zeiten mir erschlossen,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!
Wonderful, moving.
Orpheus britannicus ist hier zu hören.eine wunderbare stimme
Yes, a wonderful voice. Thanks for commenting.
Kathleen geht über die Grenze des Menschenmöglichen
Such beauty from dear Schubert, dead at 31.
Kathleen was 41 when she died.
MAGNIFICENT
...maravillosa cantante
Benjamin Britten wrote his Canticle II "Abraham and Isaac" for Ferrier, Peter Pears and himself (at the piano). The contralto and tenor complement each other superbly, as I have heard in a live performance. The often used boy alto voice pales by comparison.
To everyone's sorrow, She died young.
Her music will be immortal. Her prayer is alive with "An die Musik" by Franz Peter Schubert.
From breast cancer, about age 41.
@@Juliaflo Oh, really? Although she was short-lived,she has been blessed with art.
So she was happy.

@@mozartiikodesu Yes, I read about this. (I'm a soprano, by the way).
❤ lovely. Thanks for the translation as well.
There is Kathleen Ferrier ............. and the others.
When all calculate their effects, she has the innocence.
Perhaps the voice some were hearing just after the Creation.

Beautiful!
Yes it is beautiful in it's simplicity. Thankyou for commenting.
This. Is. Superb.
Боже мой!Какое чудо!Что за певица!Катлен Фериер!
Yes. What a voice! Thankyou for commenting.
I'm learning this song in my college voice performace class, glad to happen across this
Oh I Cried!!!!!
Schubert’s An die Musik (To Music) and Tosti’s Ideale ( Ideal) are kindred compositions, in that they (Schubert) sings to Art, which enriches our lives, and Tosti, to the Ideal, that toward which man should strive!
Mesmerizing
Divine
c'est très beau....
Indeed it is. Thankyou.
It doesn’t matter that she was an contralto. Her voice colour and interpretation of the musical emotions of Schubert are sublime..
No, it DOES matter! She was unique as a CONTRALTO (and not only the range, but the unique timbre and beauty)
outstanding
... di una bellezza senza pari!
Thankyou for commenting-----yes unparalleled. Absolutely unique.
I think of the film of the film “Angel at my Table “ where this was played in a heartbreaking scene
Yes, one of my favourite films.
