  • We are currently on the verge of a new technology revolution-autonomous robots are becoming more and more present in our everyday lives. From drones to self- driving cars, these systems are becoming pervasive, and are acting as an enabling technology for many kinds of applications. Examples of such applications are search-and-rescue operations, industrial and agricultural inspection, autonomous car driving, aerial mapping, monument digitization, and surgery.
This talk will provide an overview of the current challenges and potential solutions that aim at programming (and maintaining) thousands of robots in a safe and manageable way.
In particular, the presentation will showcase paradigms and methods for the development and deployment of complex swarm behaviors, as well as giving practical examples in the areas of disaster response and space exploration.
    Biography of the speaker
Giovanni Beltrame, Professor, Department of computer engineering and software engineering at Polytechnique Montréal
Dr. Beltrame enjoys an international reputation in the the field of intelligent embedded systems and robotics: he has published more than 100 articles in high level journals and conferences, and its laboratory has developed the Buzz programming language for swarm robotics. His presentation "How do you program 1000 robots?" was give dozens of times around the world. He has been a principal investigator in more than 20 projects in the fields of robotics and embedded systems. His laboratory has been involved in several field missions, including ESA's PANGAEA-X analog campaign with a swarm of drones, several experiments for search and rescue, as well as the IGLUNA campaign for lunar exploration with swarms of robots. Dr. Beltrame is also collaborating with NASA JPL on their underground robotic exploration platform.
