11:57 thats why I'm here Dave 😉 Nice looking naked finish on the axe and the pick guard looks pristine. 🎸 I cane see the reflection of the Peterson at 14:45
I’m installing custom Seymour’s in this exact guitar as I watch this. Had to go through a couple to find a good one, but she’s 10lbs of tone. Love your vids ; all the best from a fellow Torontonian.
All the guys talking about the stop bar not touching the body and sending it back boys it's not ment to sit flush hence the adjustments if you want it flush top wrap.
@@jeepmanxj we've used everything from CTS/Alpha/Bourns and others, in values of 500K and 300K both Linear and Audio Tapers. Each have different performance of course. They all work the same at full volume. What we've found is that different players want different responses from their pot rotations, so we know ask them about it, before choosing values and even manufacturers.
Rather than raise the tailpiece , when do you decide to "over wrap" the strings Dave ? It has been said by quite a few people that if the tailpiece is screwed tight against the body that the contact improves sustain and tone .....any feedback would be welcome thanks.
I have those same gold reflector knobs on my '16 Traditional. Beats the hell out of those ugly speed knobs. Plus I installed dial indicators on mine as well. Love my LP, best guitar evah!!
Dave, please educate us on the Canadian slang...I watch another guy in Canada who makes industrial tool/electronic videos and he says Skookum as well. Someone also commented on this video being a Skookum Choocher. I’m just wondering if these are normal slang words, or if there’s an underground secret language that I’ve been blind to all this time. Cheers!
Heard and understood. I’ve been using these words myself recently in the same ways, just foreign to us south of the border. Love your videos, cheers Dave!
This is where the 'to top wrap' or 'to not top wrap' your strings debate begins. Personally, I prefer the stopbar snug, down to the deck, and top/over wrap the strings to avoid that sharp string angle, but I'll be starting a shitstorm here, I just know it. It's just a preference not a religion.
IMO it kills the sustain to put the tailpiece to the deck. I noticed a huge difference when I started pulling it up off the guitar. I used to think the same as you. Try it, I think you'll be surprised.
Sweet toof IME what increases is the volume and resonance. Increasing the volume appears to increase the sustain but not necessarily. What I have found is (esp on semihollows): tailpiece down - more "solid body" tone (ala Les Paul, more sustain, more highs, less resonamce); tp up - more "acoustic tone" (ala hollow body, the opposite).
I'm just saying I enjoy my guitar more when the tail is down snug on the body if other people have different results that is fine. I'm just saying what I like
In my experience the tailpiece touching the guitar is not good. I think it kills sustain and deadens tone. My Gibson Les Paul Special opened up and sounded way better when I raised it a little off the top. YMMV
so what size hex key does the bridge saddle need to adjust intonation. gibson didnt provide one in my case candy, and i cant find my sets of bike hex keys when i most need them.
Thanks for quick reply. Mine is a 2015 Sprint Run [Ltd Ed} Les Paul Trad.. The missing link between the 2015s and 2016s. So it is essentially a normal Les Paul Trad, but equipped with a titanium zero fret which I think is the only desirable innovation from the 2015 debacle.. [I'm a Brit and grew up with zero fret electric guitars, notably Shergold] Anyway, it definitely looks like a hex key to me. But my eyes are old, and my close up vision is poor. So I just looked again, and I think it's more likely a hex key than a philips screw, or similar...????
So what was the advantage in changing out the controls on a brand new guitar? I could see if it was a bunch of circuit board crap like was in that Gibson Studio you worked on a few weeks ago.
As dave mentioned, different pot taper, different cap size... In many recent Gibsons you actually get 300k volume pots when 500k's sound much, much better because less signal leaks to the ground and is a very worthwhile upgrade. Finally, Gibsons have decent wiring but other models might benefit from better wiring and components which might help with noise reduction and reliability.
What's wrong with circuit boards? Everything has circuit boards in them these days. Bit more complicated to fix if it breaks maybe, but I don't think guitars are build to break. (Atleast, I hope not.)
The reason we use circuit boards is, partially, cost and the fact that you can't solder point to point wiring at the hugely small scale at which electronics are designed and built today. Also, some circuits cannot cope with the inconsistencies inherent in point to point wiring. However in the case of electric guitars, they way they're built, the abuse they're exposed to and the fact that modding is common and there's no standard solderless system (not even within Gibson themselves) makes point to point ideal. Also, this may not be true for all circuit boards but I've seen severe ground problems and general noisiness associated with Gibson's printed boards. I'm not saying that it cannot be well made but in the case of Gibson they are not consistent at all. Plus, we're probably overly traditional bastards in the guitar world. I've had Gibsons with the printed board in which I didn't have problems and others in which I had to change it to be able to play live.
if the capacitors a gibson bumblebee ,they are standard caps inside a tube .Its a bit of a con !!!!! I was going fit them to my les paul untill I did some research !!!!! I bought some european made caps that are supposed to be exact copies of the originals!!!!!!also I top wrap mine ,I find there,s less tension and more sustain ??????
This is the wiring kit that was installed in the guitar www.msscguitar.com/collections/prewired-gibson-wiring-harnesses/products/prewired-les-paul-wiring-harness
After 35 years of trusting CTS pots as my Nr.1 replacement for pots in Fenders an Gibsons, I am sorry to say, that I am completely done with their poor quality. No difference in LOG and LIN tapers, and tapers that act more like switches. Housings that came completely apart when I put the knobs on and more. Whatever happened to CTS hey I don't know, but not for me anymore. I am shopping for nothing less but best quality pots at the moment. CTS has been a complete disaster in my repair shop lately. Imagine doing a new circuit in a hollow jazzguitar and have to do it over and over for no money and finally finding out the pots are doing a lousy job. I don't bother to pay 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6 dollars a piece, but I need to know if I can trust them. No more CTS pots in my repair shop and I have to throw my 150 pc of stock in the trash can. I will never use them again.
Bumblebee caps... the trash of the 50's is now today's "gold"... Paper in oil caps suck. Seeing that the stock caps were ceramic, those can be noisy. A dollars worth of poly caps would have fixed that IF it was an issue. I only fix what needs fixing.
It's these Gibson P.O.S. that keep guys like Dave employed. They never stay in tune and have terrible sustain because of their intrinsic crappy design.
Well...perhaps it's just not the guitar for you/ in my experience it's really not so easy to find one of the rare "magical" gibsons (they're real, have faith. i found one last month) , at any price. buying a gibson retail - even through sweetwater - is not the way, unfortunately. there are several bases to cover. such as: ALWAYS try before you buy. never buy a gibson online. of course spending more money is like loading the dice in your favor - but still no guarantee. these conditions are not exclusive to gibson, but apply to their guitars more often than other makes.
Very disappointed you didn't include your soldering job, I was excited and then jumped ahead. Love your vids! Be good to everyone. Peace out...
I always enjoy these evenings with Uncle Dave expanding my mind . PEACE
Another great vid Dave. Hope you and yours are well brother. Cheers.
My cat loves the intonation!
Love that color and the plain top. Sweet looking unit there.
11:57 thats why I'm here Dave 😉 Nice looking naked finish on the axe and the pick guard looks pristine. 🎸 I cane see the reflection of the Peterson at 14:45
I did the same thing to my '16 Traditional, used gold knobs and dial markers.
I think gibson should hire Dave as set up leader. I'd work there! 😆 🤣

the brass P/U measuring thingy's come from Slew Mac? as I saw they have them also.
I rewired my LP pots so they are independent. I hate when turning down one turns down everything.
I've done the same on my Gibbys.
Metric gives you more sustain :)
What "improvement" did the new controls and components provide over the factory installed equipment?
I need to know! I won't be able to sleep tonight.
...
ur puttin' us on right?
If the factory controls on that LP are anything like mine the first 20% and last 20% of the range don't do much at all.

what are those silver discs in the hole in the back?..does my guitar have those too!?
I have those same gold reflector knobs on my '16 Traditional. Beats the hell out of those ugly speed knobs. Plus I installed dial indicators on mine as well. Love my LP, best guitar evah!!
Why did it need all the controls changing Dave? what with it being quite new!
what is the neck relief ?/? gor gibson epiphone standards
Hey Dave, how about another live sat. show? Merry Christmas too!!
Always enjoy your videos Dave. From Tasmania.
Might need to get one of those stickers
Did you reuse the metal mounting plate that the original controls were mounted to? If not, why not? Just curious.
I didn't get your email
Why would somebody buy a new $2500+ Les Paul and swap out the guts? Does it make considerably different tone?
A finish that pretty, I would talk the owner into having a clear acrylic pickguard.
Dave's World of Fun Stuff - sure, unless you have a hard strumming attack. Then you'll need a pickguard.
I took mine of my 98 studio, plays better IMO
Yet another enjoyable video Dave.
wowie zowie I didn't know you were
Swap the Klusons tuners for some Grovers and it's ready to rock.
Ain't a thing wrong with the Klusons. It's already ready to rock.
Agreed, sir.
Searching the web, it's almost like the "tone wood" discussions.

Skookum as frig!!
He probably thought cranking the bridge down would give more sustain.
Is it not a good thing I personally prefer the tail peace to be snug all the way down.

Me three. I think LP Jrs have great resonance and sustain partly because of the wraparound tailpiece. Topwrapping makes it very similar.
IMO it kills the sustain to put the tailpiece to the deck. I noticed a huge difference when I started pulling it up off the guitar. I used to think the same as you. Try it, I think you'll be surprised.

Nice guitar but I would darken that fretboard with some Stew Mac oil dye. It would look a whole lot better.
I've heard that from others too but I can say that I've used it on 7 or 8 rosewood boards with great results.
oops a Frank Zappa fan.
so what size hex key does the bridge saddle need to adjust intonation.
gibson didnt provide one in my case candy,

Gary Crant its a screw behind the saddle, you need a screwdriver not a hex key

That's possible, I've only worked on a few les Paul's, they're normally a slot head screw, but maybe someone else has seen that exact model in person.
So what was the advantage in changing out the controls on a brand new guitar? I could see if it was a bunch of circuit board crap like was in that Gibson Studio you worked on a few weeks ago.

50s wiring is different than modern wiring. the new harness is probably 50s and will have no treble loss when the vol is turned down.
That's right.

Justin Mabe i just noticed that myself gotta love daves sense of humor
Someone got sold a bill of goods here... unless you changed the pups too...
I say this all the time
good idea putting the blanket down, incase the guitar backfires on ya
Open heart Surgery on a GEEtar
.
She is, indeed, a skookum choocher.
Intonation???? Me likes sour notes!!!! Har!!!!

Ditto. Total crap. Victor Christian has been demo'ing some Alpha pots with amazing audio tapers. I might pick some up and give them a whizz.
Gitaarman Ad what is your choice of pot manufacturer now?
I'm still shopping around, but for the moment I am replacing pots with Alpha. There's a series that will fit US knobs.
Probably because production is chinese lately, to my knowledge. Also a CTS guy myself...
Why not just lay a 1/8 allen wrench on the pickup and adjust then you don't have to keep going back and forth with that crazy key chain thing...
A Scookum job indeed.

what the flux is going on here?
It helps with making the solder stick on the pots
its a joke
Don't use that word. We hate that word. AvE uses that word. Not good.
