I play in a band and have had hearing loss too. I've had hearing aids for a year now and find that they're too loud with live music and there's some phase shifting as well so I had my audiologist make a music setting which turns them down and cuts some of those frequencies that were doubling a bit
This is one of the best videos that you have posted. It totally reflects my life. My reluctance to accept my hearing loss led me to fill in ALL of the gaps badly for years. Hope others use this outstanding video to set them down the path to making the quality of their life better. My life has improved in so many ways after getting the right hearing care that I'm still experiencing new worlds of sounds that I lost.
I got my Tinnitus from a too loud music concert in 2005. My ENT shortly after told me I shouldn't stop to go to concerts when I asked her, just to wear hearing protection. I did this successfully for a few more years, but another loud music concert damaged me in 2016 because of faulty ear plugs. After that I developed a horrible condition called Hyperacusis and worse Tinnitus. Both got significantly worse in 2018 when I jammed with a friend on electric guitar. Two small amps, I wore earplugs, and the amps were maybe 20% of volume. Both my conditions got catastrophic. I managed well for a number of years with earplugs, but my T kept getting louder and my H more sensitive from sudden loud noises outside, chainsaws...jackhammers, sirens, things I could not see to avoid, suddenly operating. Then in December 2023 I was sat in traffic when a car pulled up next to mine, and when traffic moved, he sounded the most intense muffler I've heard, my whole dashboard shook. My ears got even worse. I am 95% homebound now....the world has become too loud for my ears. And on the times I do go out, I have to wear ear protection, but my T level even without earplugs is insanely loud, so with earplugs, it's unbearable. I have been very unlucky. Look after your ears, I am basically disabled because of a series of damages and setbacks. I am always surprised that people in loud bands don't always get Hyperacusis, some just get tolerable Tinnitus. Maybe I have weak ear genes or something.
Really good and important information. I was resistant to hearing aids and I didn't realise I had a loss as you adapt with the visual cues. Struggling with hearing every day is so exhausting. Also had uneven loss on the left side and luckily it wasn't an AN. I understand being stubborn but he will be amazed how much better he can hear with hearing aids.
Great vid Dr Cliff! Thanks again. I bet there is a high percentage that are just like Dave and many will relate to his experience! My first clew to hearing loss was when someone mentioned that they had their ears checked after they found they couldn't hear the blinkers 'click' in their car anymore. That was me! I have lost my high frequency range - it's gone. However, when I pop in my aids (I wear them all day, even with custom ear molds) the world comes alive again! I wear them 16 hours a day, every day. I wouldn't be without them! If you only need open-fit aids for moderate loss (not ear molds), I found them VERY comfortable. I'd forget they were there. Even went swimming with them in once, LOL! Came up out of the water realizing what I had done and, and opened them up and dried them in the sun immediately. So they seemed to survive. I rarely need to 'fiddle' with them. Phone apps these days are great - very inconspicuous. It looks like you're reading a notification. ;v) DO NOT put off getting a aud appointment and aides (if needed) for any reason - at least until you've tried them!! You always have a grace period where you can return them if you are not satisfied. Life will be better. It sure is for me!
This was a very interesting vlog. I am scheduled to an audiologist this Tuesday. I chose her from Dr Cliff's list on his website. I have hearing loss from unprotected noise exposure with tinnitus. I have noticed that my issue is understanding what people are saying. I was afraid for a long time that hearing aids couldn't help me because I had killed a bunch of those little hairs in my inner ear. So I kept putting off getting hearing aids over and over. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on something that might not help me. Never mind that too many people I knew with hearing aids always seemed to be messing with them and saying they were uncomfortable. Some internet algorithm pointed me to Dr. Cliff's website and what an education I have received from there and from the vlogs. Rather than dreading getting my hearing checked out, I'm now looking forward to it.
I'm a musician and was exposed to allowed practice session one evening that made my head feel like it was in a vise but couldn't stop because I was drumming. Since then I noticed my hearing ability changed and I have a bit of tinnitus. I'll be looking into hearing aids soon and looking forward to it. I hope Dave Grohl happens upon this awesome audiologist and follows up with his offer. ✌️😎
Thanks for this post. Dave is a great example of how not to take care of the hearing one has left after years and years of audio trauma. Kennedy's as a result of sound trauma varies from case to case, and the forms whether they be ringing or roaring or low frequency hum, can be quite debilitating and depressing and could lead to suicidal ideation in some cases. What I found most surprising is that tinnitus doesn't live in the air it actually exists in the brain, as the tiny hairs in the ear that work as sound wave receptors essentially fry out from continued trauma. I live with high-pitched ringing in both ears coupled with a low frequency hum that comes and goes whatever it wants to I've made diet changes, incorporated yoga practice on a daily basis, and have become a staunch advocate for hearing protection so that I can continue to play the drums which I love and continue to collaborate in music projects. But I've also incorporated these measures because they're really is no evidence-based, trusted cure for tinnitus, And because as a mental health counselor I'm responsible for taking care of myself.
I too wear hearing aids regularly. Due to the recent need to wear a mask when meeting with people in noisy situations I have a similar problem. I cannot see what people are saying. Hence your recent video about a Cure for Deafness followed closely by this one really caught my attention. Dave Grohl should follow up on your offer. I ca relate to Dave but my hearing loss in my left ear is about 20 dB worse than my right ear but my tinnitus is manifesting in my rught ear. This as a high pitched sound while there is a constant hissing sound in between both ears that's distributed evingly.
I can relate to Dave Grohl too. My left ear is worse than my right ear. And like you, I also have a high pitched sound and a constant hissing. I got my tinnitus from exposure to very loud decibels of music. I was standing in the front row in front of a monitor. My son is in a band called 7th heaven. And I was standing in the front row on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. So I’ve had it since March 16th. My son is a drummer and he has tinnitus too.
I so get what he is saying with the mask thing. I just started wearing hearing aids 3 days ago. And before these I was like that. I didnt realise how much I depended on lip reading before the covid/mask issue. Once those masks came on my hearing seemed worse. Now I have the joy of trying to get used to these things lol.
Masks are why I noticed that my hearing was getting worse in my left ear. I'm getting a hearing aid in early March, and I can't wait for it. I didn't realize how much I relied on people's facial expressions.
Hi Dr. Cliff, question for you. I think I have a ruptured ear drum, but I'll never find out as long as I live because of my medical condition. So for people to say you need to go see the Dr isn't possible at all for some of us. So back in Nov my right ear itched and I stratched it with my finger tip like I always do and always have my whole life with no problems. This time was different. I heard what to me sounded kinda like a fizzing sound followed by pain. Now ever since that day my hearing in that ear has went we'll say from a 10 down to about a 1. So It's we'll say March 1st, 2022 and there's been absolutely no improvement, so I've accepted the fact that I'm now mostly deaf in that ear and it'll never be fixed. So my question is, can I put in like a foam ear plug that I've seen you roll long ways and insert it in your ear. So can I get the foam ones and roll them long ways and put in my ear and get them wet? Or what would you recommend to wash my hair without getting water into my ear. Sad that Dave isn't taking his hearing health serious enough, never the less, a very good interview and a very worthy re-post. Masks are reducing decibel levels to around 13 decibels. A month ago, I upgraded from Eargo Neo HiFi's (which I wore for about 16 months) to Phonak Lyric 4's completely invisible in the canal. I was locked in a basement while 160 decibel music was blasted about 4.5 years ago. My low frequency (bass and volume) was impacted most. My life has never been the same but I'm having some success with the new Lyrics. Let us pray that technology advancements along with ongoing hearing loss research combined with affordable solutions will get better in time. I don't wish sudden sensorial hearing loss on anybody.

After they were kicked out of bar for drunk and disorderly, I followed the oldest guy home to make sure he arrived safely. Showed me around his house. Then proceeded to bring me in basement where 2 large speakers were. About a half hour in after playing loud music, he went upstairs for more beer, locked the basement door and cranked the music I'd say to 150 decibels. It was deafening and a high powered audio system. Immediate pain and hearing loss ensued. Following 9 months at work, the hispanic guy, with tattoos & a cocaine addiction, was mocking me at work as a deaf guy. I reported him and subsequently resigned the position. I now wear hearing aids.
Hi. I need your help. I have Rexton hearing aids. Everything sounds tinny. I can’t hear base sounds when I listen to music. It’s very frustrating. Also they cut in and out. If I put my fingers in my ear with the hearing aids in, they sound perfect. What would cause that and can it be corrected? Thanks for any assistance you can give. Oh…I’m not a musician and I have tinnitus so that blows up Dg Meg’s theory.
What is his resistance to behind the ear receiver in the canal hearing aids? No one will know he is wearing them. I believe they are resistant to hair dye. He has no idea of what he is missing until he tries them. I live in SW Florida where it is hot. I got Phonak Paradise P90's in May. Just recentlly it has been cool enough to drive with the window down. There is very little wind noise! I am amazed. Technology marches forward. My friend ; a retired police officer and a fellow Viet Nam vet ;was just recently scheduled for hearing aids from the Veterans Administration. I coached him on the process. I bet he will be amazed. These really work well in groups and retaurants. There is separate restaurant setting, but the automatic setting works very well.
It is extremely normal for musicians to have more hearing loss in one side than the other. Violinist lose much more hearing on the right ear than the left for example, just because it's closer to the instrument and receives more acoustic trauma
I tick all these boxes, including the acoustic neuroma. In my case, my right ear was damaged by microphone feedback through a head-level monitor. I developed tinnitus and used an ear plug to protect that ear. But as band leader, I needed to hear all the other instruments, so I had to leave the left ear open. That ear developed even worse tinnitus and severe hearing loss, and I was diagnosed with the acoustic neuroma. There has been a study that showed a connection between loud construction environments and the chances of a neuroma developing. It's true that in the recording studio you can hear minutiae in performances but even before I was diagnosed I knew something was off and didn't trust my hearing to judge EQ or dynamics. I use in ear monitors while practicing, but they definitely take away from the immersive experience of power genres. And if you think this interview is a little too much swearing for your liking, you definitely want to stay away from rock musicians ;)
I've got it from using headphones cranked for 40+ years and playing with a hard hitting drummer. I felt the same as Dave. I only like to hear music cranked because it's unadulterated to me. My wife could hear the music from my headphones a room away. Got it in 2016, freaked out then the doctor said to learn to live with it. I use a tinnitus noise therapy sound video with ear buds that matches up to the sound in my head when it gets loud. After awhile you stop thinking about it for stretches of time during the day. You sort of train your self to deal with it.

He's wearing in ears during that interview, also they make custom in ear plugs that fit different ear canals.

You can try Eargene, but perhaps you need to try a different type of plug.

I would say 98% of rock musicians have some degree of tinnitus.
