    The thing that makes this clip so powerful was laid in the previous clip, when he started naming Founding Fathers of the United States. It reminded that here was one who knew the men he named, who walked with them and spoke with them and, in that regard, could be considered to be the last representative of that generation which lived through the American Revolution and, as such, was their spokesman. When you take this into account, it makes his statement foretelling the coming of the American Civil War much more powerful, as if, through him, they were saying "If civil war is needed to finish what we began, then let it come, and let it be the last battle of our Revolution."

      I would also argue Quincy Adams was out last revolutionary president. The last president of the same spirit as the founding fathers, since him the presidents had been undeniably different. Partly because of how drastically Andrew Jackson changed politics.

    • @zerimar26
      @zerimar26 4 года назад +7

      I would think John Quincy Adams knew the Founding Fathers could of dealt with a divisive issue such as slavery but they were more concerned about uniting the country after the Revolution so they punted it away for future presidents to deal with. None of them of course could deal with slavery until Abraham Lincoln.

    Interesting enough John Quincy Adams is the only president to serve in the House after his presidency when he died on February 23, 1848 he died in the Speaker's Room inside the Capitol Building. First term Representative Abraham Lincoln of Illinois was assigned to the committee making the funeral arrangements for John Quincy Adams.

      @@Dann_yyyyy: It means that slavery needed to be crushed in order for America to be as truly free a country as its Founding Fathers intended, and that if unraveling slavery meant taking the country to civil war, then it was worth going to war over. Now, in real life, the Amistad case was not directly connected to the start of the Civil War, which would not occur for a couple more decades. But in the context of this movie, it works powerfully.

      Dred Scott was enacted in spite of the State Rights to decide on the issue. Wisconsin said so and opposed its application. Later on, the Reb States rebelled, they did not use the term "State Rights" in their declarations, they complained harshly of the disobedience of Northern States to obey the Federal Slave Fugitive Law. But 50 years after Civil War, the descendants of the Rebs were bitching about "State Rights", and they even ranted that their ancestors rebelled not because of Slavery, but because of the lack of respect of the Federal Government to the Rights of the States.

    Part 2 of "1776" this scene. He finished what his father started. John Adams wanted everyone free. They settled to get the south on board for the Revolution but the "peculiar institution" existed. I love his attitude. Backs to wall, Van Buren and John C. Calhoune the loudest voices in the room still, Adams was as brash as his father.
    "Screw off, if we fight over it, bring it on. Let's settle this now"

    Of course some historical details are imprecise, but still it is beautiful: no-one is an island, no-one is without room for improvement, no society is without it's flaws. Who deserves what and why is beside the point. The point is: choose between selflessness and selfishness. Accept when life and people say no to you yes, but don't let that stop you from believing in the potential for a society to be better than it once was. Freedom is not a prize to be won, it's a road we all walk down, often hardly, often slowly, often with obstacles, often with some parts of the road missing and in need of being put in, still we all have choices and we should respect and appreciate them and other people's, whatever our judgements.
    I think John Adams senior would have been proud of his son.

Cinqué, who had led the insurrection on the "Amistad" and was triumphantly released by a US court, tried to be a business man in the slave trade after his return to the African homeland. Spielberg's film does not report this.

      The film never outright says that Cinque became a slave trader because there doesn't seem to be hard proof of that anywhere. What the film *does* say, however, is that Cinque came home to find his family gone... and that it's believed that they were sold into slavery. So, the film has a bittersweet conclusion. It says that slavery has no ending.
