    Tim - good points about the vinyl stacking system. This system can be also be used to create framed glass block windows (for either new construction or remodeling projects) and also for shaped prefabricated walls (curved, angled - like you show in your video or L shaped).
    The vinyl framed windows and shaped walls take more skill to prefabricate so it may be best to have a skilled glass block fabricator put them together.

    Thanks for the tip on using plain silicone caulking. Judging by the nature of the material, I am kind of assuming that grouting is not altogether necessary between the blocks either, and that I would be able to simply apply a silicone sealant between the blocks once they are assembled.

    Could I build it first like the ones they sell at Home Depot if it's just for a window and then set it in? And if so is there a limit to the size say using 8" blocks that it won't fall apart tell I get it in?

  • @francorossobianco
    @francorossobianco 12 лет назад +3

    One question which I saw asked but not answered - what about the last row of blocks? I will be knocking a hole in the side of my house for this glass block shower window and need to know how that last row gets tight. I am guessing that you leave a gap at the top and use shims and some type of sealant squrited in to keep it sealed, then tile up to edge of the blocks to make it look finished.....

    Is silicone caulk durable enough compared to cement? The silicone sealant they apply in my bathroom only last about a year.

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  Месяц назад

      You're using the wrong adjective. Try again. Durable is not the right word. How long do you think a silicone roadway would last?

    I want to replace an old basement window with glass block. My foundation is quarry stone. My ? is ,what would I use to attach the frame to the stone? This would affect the bottom and sides of the frame.

  • @askthebuilder
    @askthebuilder  15 лет назад

    If the wall has an excellent foundation, it will not shrink or crack. As for the caulk vs. mortar method, you need to consult with the code officials and manufacturer to see if caulk is an approved method in your application. Always check with the manufacturer when you have a question as to *how* to use it. Failure to do this could void a warranty.

    Is it possible to incorporated led stripe into this system? Above or under each row. I mainly doubt where exactly I should put it... if there is enought space. Thanks very much for answearing :)

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  10 лет назад

      I imagine it's possible.The plastic spacers used in this video were solid white so the light would be on one side or the other of the spacer. The big question would be the thickness of the LED stripe. Too thick and it interferes with the spacing of the block. Contact Corning - the sole mfr of true glass block.

    Hi I'm building a stick frame wall and I would like to put a little row of glass blocks into it. Well what I’m looking for is the width of the vertical spacers and I can’t find that info to add- I can add the blocks together and add 1/4 inch on all sides but I’m not sure how much to add specifically for spacing, how far apart the blocks are when installed or whether the spacers are designed to fit in the cavity with the corners flush against each other.
