  • (written in 2013) Max lost his leg due to a road traffic accident 6 years ago, before I had him, and they think he was about 4 years old at the time of the accident. I rescued him from the RSPCA, where they described him as a 'very affectionate boy'... and he is! He's also very agile.... he hunts, runs and climbs fences.... such an inspiration!
    I hope this video helps anyone who has a three legged cat or if your cat is facing surgery... all the very best wishes to you.
    (written in 2021) UPDATE - Thank you everyone for watching and I'm so pleased this video has helped so many people and cats especially those facing surgery. Max lived to the grand age of 17, I lost him last summer. I was devastated as he'd lived with me, hopping for 13 years. He did SO well. The final few years he did seem in more pain and had curvature of the spine. I found that supplements for joints helped - Hills Prescription cat food J/D (for joints), and You Move supplements for cats. He was a real character and it was only when he seemed in too much pain and stopped eating enough that I knew his time was up.
    Rest In Peace my special boy.... I'll always love you with all my heart. XXX

    3 legged cats do just fine. One day when i lived in the country. A 3 legged stray cat adopted me as her new human. I had 2 other cats and they had to defend themselves from her. She could run just as fast as a 4 legged cat and spent just as much time outside as my other 2 cats. The only time she needed my help was when she had an itch and tried to scratch her head with her missing leg.

      +mrrango25 Yes they do cope incredibly well! As you say they just need a bit of assistance with scratching on the side of the missing leg.

    My cat had a very bad accident yesterday. I witnessed it and it was horrible, the screams of pain and agony. She's almost 3 so still quite young. The vet said its not possibe to fix the leg. So on monday (Christmas eve) her left hind leg will be amputated and we can get her back just a few hours after that. I was concerned, still am a bit because we can get her back so quickly, but this video gave me hope that she'll be fine. :) So thank you for sharing this!

    I'm very glad you shared this as I'm faced with having a 3 legged cat next week. I found my 3 year old Manx, Pug, hanging from his foot, in a freak accident. with it wedged in at the joint between two pickets at the top of the 6ft privacy fence., and he was probably hanging that way all afternoon. I got him down, and his foot at the time didn't look too bad, it wasn't broken but he just drug his leg behind him . I thought with rest overnight by morning it would be better, but it was much worse swollen and bleeding so I rushed him to the vet at 7AM that morning. He has been there all this week,. sometimes a little better then worse. I saw him yesterday and was encouraged as he could put weight on it, but Today the vet called and said he took a real turn for the worst, the leg is cold and has severely deteriorated in just a few hours, and must be removed tomorrow. I really was dreading hearing that, but there was nothing else that could be done for him. Seeing Max living the good life and getting around so well is very encouraging, and something I needed to see. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you for your message. So sorry to hear about Manx, it must be such a worrying time for you and thank goodness you found him when you did. I do hope all goes well at the vets, and yes... try not to worry, cats cope incredibly well with three legs! Sending you both very best wishes.

    I just adopted a 3 legged kitten. He is all black and is missing half of his right rear leg. He is only 18 weeks old and is small for his age. I named him 'Pete'. Pete loves to play with my other two black cats and with my black/white cat. He didn't take long to adjust to his new home and he is very affectionate. I hope he lives a long time, as he had a rough start.

    I want to thank you for placing this video on RUclips. Our cat had an accident yesterday and just an hour ago the vet had to amputate his shattered left hindleg. Just by watching Max walking on a fench and jumping to an other fench, gives me much hope for the future. I told my 9 year old son the bad news and he almost started crying and then i showed him this video and also knew that our cat is gonna be alright. Thanks again from a dutch mom and animal lover.

      Emmie Seubring Dear Emmie, how's your cat doing now? Sorry to hear he was in an accident but I hope the operation went well and the early stages of his recovery. Thank you for your message I'm so glad to hear this video gave you and your son hope in your hour of need. Max really does cope incredibly well as you have seen.... sometimes he gets into scrapes and it's tougher for him, but that is to be expected. I do hope your cat adjusts well! By the way your English is very good! All very best wishes from Engand.

      Thank you very much for your reply and compliment on my english (also thanks to google translate for helping me) ;-). I'm so sorry that i didn't reply any sooner, but it's been a few troublesome months for us.
      Let me start by telling you that i've had written 2 other detailed messages to send to you, but then something happens that would change everything.
      At first the operation (amputation) went great, the day after the operation we took him home. At home he deteriorated very quickly, because he refused to eat or drink anything. After just 4 days we had to bring him back to the vet. They would put him on a drip and started to force feed him. But in a bloodtest they found that his kidneys stopped working, hopefully due to stress from trauma of the accident and amputation.
      After a week he did much better and was eating and drinking, so he came home again. He had to recover and regain much of his strength, the plan was to put him in a bench (crate?) for at least 5 weeks. Better said then done, our Nike loved to go outside, so he became very frustrated and started to scream and pulled his own hair from the back near his tail.
      After 3 frustrated weeks we decided to let him roam around in the living room during the day and at night in the bench. And the very first thing he did (not tried, no! he just did) was climbing on to his favorite spot on top of the cattower, 1,5 meter (don't know how else to call it)
      We could keep this up for allmost a week, but the screaming and scratching at every door was heartbreaking. He still kept on pulling his hair out and now he also started to lick at the bold spots till they began to bleed. We decided to open the upstairsdoor for him, hoping that roaming throughout the whole house would satisfy him.
      Yes, it did satisfy him for at least 2 days, then he started to terrorize the backdoor, to get in outside.
      Our backyard is fenched in, the lowest fench is 2 meter high, so if he wanted to leave the yard he had to climb the fench, walk over to and over the shed, down a 3 meter high fench. We never thought he would do that the first day we let him in the yard, but , yes! he did.
      From that day on he did great. Was playing with his friends and our neighbours. He gain weigth and strength!
      We were so happy to see that he recoverd so great and also so quickly.
      This happiness didn't last 2 months.
      Two weeks ago (sunday august 30) he came crawling home on his belly, pullig his body forth with his frontpaws. It was heart wrenching seeing him not using his only hindleg, i immediatly knew something was very very wrong. Knowing that he had to climb fenches and a shed to get in the backyard. (Amazing, isn't it? )
      Back to the vet, waiting to hear the result of the xray.... Time couldn't go any slower.
      The news was bad, very, very bad.....his femur was shattered....
      An operation to set his leg was almost impossible and after spending our vacation money, at 1800 euro, we couldn't effort any more expansive actions, with no warranty....My heart broke.
      The orthopedist wanted to try 1 thing, to set the leg put and it in a kind of cast, with the hope that connective tisseu would grow around the bone. If that happend it could be that it pulled the bone pieces to gether, so it could grow back as 1 piece. This is not a usely done methode, but for our 3 year old 3 legged cat he wanted to try that. Hospital cost were put at 0,- for us, only medicine and x-rays we had to pay. He spent a whole week in the hospital. Monday septembre 7th, with my oldest daughter (19y) i went to the vet after having Nike a week at home, the cast went of to see how many growth happend (if any did) Nike screamed and growled at us, i had to held him done when the vet removed the cast, because he had so much pain. The vet looked at me and said, there's abdolutely no growth, and i knew there's no hope for him. We decided to let him go and end his suffering.
      He died 14:55 septembre 7th 2015.
      I'm planning to make a kind of video of his journey to his end and wil put it on my youtube channel. Have also clip of him climbing the cat tower and fench. And 1 of him growling at me, because i brought him again to the vet, that was when he had his leg in a cast the first week. Maybe you like to see that to?
      Sorry for this long long story, and thank you for listening if you got through it all up to this point. ;)
      Greatings from the Netherlands Emmie

      Sorry for my delay in replying. I'm SO very sorry for how things turned out for you and Nike. It sounds like you both had such a challenging at times traumatic experience, your story bought a few tears to my eyes. It sounds like you have wonderful kind vets who have gone above and beyond the call of duty... doing all they can to give Nike a chance. You did the right thing to end his suffering, but such a difficult thing to do.
      We can all only do our best for animals and give them lots of love whilst we have them. With cats it's hard as when they do love to go outside exploring they can get into trouble at any time. Like your Nike... Max loves going outside and at times when he's been poorly and the vet has said keep him in, he's clawed at the door so much getting stressed, I've had to let him out!
      It would be lovely to see your video clips when you have time to put them on your channel. Maybe when enough time has passed you will have another cat, you clearly have a lot of love to give to animals.
      Take very good care, lots of love and best wishes to you and your children as it's been such a tough time for them as well.
      Very best wishes from England.

    This is an amazing, inspiring video. Unfortunately, my poor cat had his right hindleg amputated. It has been two days since his amputation, and it has been very hard on him. He is definitely in pain.
    I hope he can adjust well and do most of the things he was able to do.

      I'm so glad the video helped you. When I first met Max he'd just had his leg amputated by a rescue shelter. He seemed ok, and it was a week before I could rehome him. I couldn't tell if he was in a lot of pain as I didn't know him well then. He certainly was more wobbily in the early days and had to learn how to find his balance, using his tail etc. But cats are very resilient and I'm sure your cat will cope well, with time. Wishing you both well.

      He will. Mine was an adult age 2..it took him a little bit to adjust as well but now he does just fine. Biggest challenge is tryi g to keep his weight down. Hes a foodie and i was advised its pretty important to keep him from getting fat due to additional stress on the one back leg. Other than that he enjoys life and a helping hand once in a while!

      Wow! I'm thrilled to hear Violet is well and learning how to cope. It's a worry in the early days as they do seem to carry on as if they have all their legs, then can panic at some of the situations they get into. As I'd rescued Max from a cattery, he was kept inside for about a month... which gave him time to practise balancing, walking along the back of the sofa. They are so determined! Wishing you both well.

    Max reminds me of my three legged cat who also lost a hind leg. I did not let him out of the back yard after losing his back leg because he simply never had any fear or sense of defending himself against dogs or other cats for that matter, but he could run really fast with just three legs and had a great time playing in the back yard. He passed away last April at only 9 years old. So it's nice to find the vids of Max.

      I'm so sorry to hear that, I hope you are ok. I'm sure he had a wonderful life with you, and yes they can run very fast indeed! Max too shows know fear, and has been in several fights with other cats. Only recently he had an infected ear and cheek, two vet visits later then he was on the mend. I'm very proud of him defending himself though, despite having such a disadvantage! I'm really glad you've enjoyed Max's videos, thanks for watching.

    My cat Ash looks just the same but has a left hind leg amputation. This videos helped me decide as pins etc weren't an option for him, his leg was broken in 16 places! He's just as good as new. Just like Max he limps when walking, but running and playing with other cats you'd never know. He climbs on the roof and up the trees. Loves to bring mice and birds into my bed at night then hinder me from making the bed...he also walks across the fence like this to get second breakfast from the neighbour's.

    Great video, one of our cats was hit by a car about 6 months ago .. the vet tried to pin his leg but when the bone fused it had twisted so there was no other option but to amputate. I wish we'd just done that to start with, as soon as he came home he was a happy boy again ... now he's loving life, it's weird how the tail has strengthened so much, it's almost like a leg

    So happy to see this. I just removed my cat's leg as a rare from of bone cancer developed in it.in order to stop the cancer spreading and taking her life, the vet said I needed to amputate. Given the only thing wrong with her was the cancer in her leg, I sold nearly everything of materialistic value I had to raise the money and had it removed. It is brilliant to see your cat has adapted so well. My cat has the same leg removed. She is currently a bit wobbly ( it's only 2 days after surgery ), but she is already starting to adapt, but very happy to see another 3 legged cat looking full of life. Thanks for the post.

It does take time for them to adapt, but they are very good at getting on with life... and your love will really help. I'm glad the video has helped you. All the very best to you both.

    Thanks so much - Max is awesome! My one year old cat also got hit by a car yesterday and she has broken pelvis and sciatic nerve damage, and the outcome is possibly an amputated right rear leg - but she still may just end up being a limping four legged girl! I am just so happy she is alive. I was telling people that three legged cats are awesome and now I am going to send the link of Max to some people so they can see that they really are!!

    Thanks for posting this. I rescued a cat about a month and a half ago with a broken spine and completely destroyed leg. He had two surgeries to try to reconstruct it, but in the end it wasn't possible and his leg got amputated on Monday. He still walks funny, especially because he's just recovering sensitivity in his other hind leg and tail. Before the spine surgery, he had no sensitivity at all, so I'm very happy he's able to walk, even with difficulty. He's having physical therapy twice a week, so I'm expecting him to recover and be able to jump!

    I can't thank you enough for this inspiring and helpful post. Before seeing yours I viewed a post of a missing front leg and that cat was really getting around and playing. I saw another one of what appeared to be pitiful hopping due to an amputated hind leg but it was an older cat. My kitty's hind leg just had to be removed due to cancer. She is about 8 yrs. old. Your video gives me so much hope for her adjustment. This is her first day and she show signs that she is going to do well. I am a little concerned about her using the litter box. The Vet reported that she had used it and it hadn't been 24 hours since the surgery. By the way, your video is of excellent quality!

I've had Max, as a three legged cat, for 7 years now.. he's 11, and he copes so well. They are wobbily on their feet to begin with and even now he slips to one side when he runs across the kitchen tiles, but he's incredibly resilient. I'm glad you found the video inspiring, that's the idea. I know it helped me such a lot to watch videos when I first had him. G Burns I hope your cat is much better now, and maybe back home. I remember bringing Max home and he tried walking along the back of the sofa, couldn't get his balance... and fell off a few times. mrrango25 Just like your cat ... Max still gets an itchy ear, where his leg is missing. When he starts moving his stump I reach in and do my best to scratch him where he needs it! And yes it's amazing how fast they can run, you can't tell then that they only have three legs.

    Your cat's story is so similar to mine's! I also adopted my cat, a 3 year old male, from a cat rescuer, and he had damaged his leg pretty badly, probably in an accident, the girl said that the vet thought they could fix the leg, but in the end we had to get his leg removed. It's been almost two months since the surgery and he's even more agile than before (probably because before he had to balance a non-functioning leg and it was pretty difficult). Thanks for sharing!

      +Julieta Haase That's wonderful to hear thank you for your comment. I didn't know Max as a four legged cat so didn't know how agile he was then, he'd just had it off it was a shaved stump when I adopted him. It sounds like your cat is coping tremendously well as a three legged cat, and the good news is that it can only get better for him, the more he gets used to it. Best wishes to you both.

    I got a three legged cat as well. Named him Tricycle but in hindsight should have named him Tripod.
    He is missing half of his left hind leg but he uses it to rest on it. Though two or three times a year when he jumps from a high place he slams the stump into the ground which causes him great pain.
    He also walks just like yours and even does the gallop. Full speed he does a almost sideways bunny hop.

    • @redheadtv967
      @redheadtv967  9 лет назад

      navyamegm Sounds like your cat is doing really well! Yes I think Vets normally remove the entire leg for that reason, cat's get into all sorts of scrapes and do fall easily. They are incredible how they cope though and as you say can run really fast too.

    Just underwent all of this today! My cat was involved in a traffic accident during late July of this year. he had a fractured leg/femur and underwent surgery, he was recovering with a pin in his leg up until two days ago. He went back to get xrays to see if it had fully healed and the bone had not formed at all and started to deteriorate. So the call was that it be amputated today and that is what happened. We are getting him back on monday. He grew up outside, he's the best buddy.

    I’ve been scouring the internet for the past few days looking at info on 3 legged cats as my cat, Pixie, just had her left hindleg amputated after the joint in that leg had been broken somehow (we only found out she had been injured after we got back from holiday and she didn’t run into the house as soon as we got home like she usually would, so we have no clue how the incident happened). The vet only gave us two options for her: a very complex £4000 surgery with no guarantee that it would even be effective enough for pixie’s leg to fully recover, or an amputation. We knew the most humane thing to do was the amputation because the vet said that cats adapt really well to three legs once they’ve adjusted, and the surgery would have made her more uncomfortable and aggravated than the amputation would have. It’s been just over a day since she’s come home, and Pixie seems to be adjusting okay which is a relief. At first, she was quite growly (but we think that’s because of the neck brace that has to stay on for a week to stop her from licking the area her leg was cut). She seems to walk fine once she’s caught her balance for a few seconds after first standing up, and she’s even already hobbled up a couple of stairs. The most worrying part at the moment is getting her to eat her food with her medication at the right times, and when we have to leave her home alone while we’re all at school/college/work during the day. So thank you for sharing this video. It gives me confidence to know that it’s possible for Pixie to be able to do the things she was able to do before, once she’s adjusted 😊

      She IS a bit wobbly and is desperate to go outdoors again. Whether she wants to find her lost leg (it's been incinerated; I have explained this to her) or visit vengeance on the fox that probably bit her, she is grounded for the duration. In the meantime, she will have to put up with ceaseless stroking, treats and kisses and is making the best of her situation. I hope and believe that she will, one day, rival Max in the three-legged cat stakes.

    • @redheadtv967
      @redheadtv967  7 лет назад +1

      Hopefully your cat is outside now, having fun exploring... finding her balance and hasn't had it out with that pesky fox. It sounds like you've been giving her more than adequate TLC to compensate for the lack of limb. At one point I was researching phantom limb syndrome and even tried to meditate to grow Max's leg bag. Have a fascination with quantum physics. :-) I was, I'm sure you will be surprised to hear, unsuccessful.

    • @paulchignell8341
      @paulchignell8341 7 лет назад +1

      She is, indeed, outside again and back to her old bad habits. She can run just as fast with three legs as she could with four and likes to provoke my neighbours' cats into chasing her, in order to prove the point. So far, so good. But, I hope that she will remember that big red doglike creatures with well equipped jaws do NOT play games. I wonder if she, and Max, will ever realise that a cat cannot scratch itself under the chin with a paw attached to a leg which no longer exists.

    • @redheadtv967
      @redheadtv967  7 лет назад +1

      Yes this is where having a human helps... when Max's stump twitches and he bends his head towards it, I step in to scratch his chin. He very much appreciates my assistance. My other top tip which Max enjoys is having flat cardboard boxes. It's far easier for a three-legged cat to scratch horizontally than vertically... check out some of my other Max videos. Speaking of which I have one of him running fast which I've been meaning to upload for ages. As you say... it's remarkable that three legged cats can almost run as fast a grey hounds... and yet they look so ungainly when they walk. Bless 'em. Glad yours is up to her usual tricks of terrorising the local cats too, and by the sounds of it coping admirably.

    It's sad that he lost his leg. No cat should have to be an amputee. But they are so strong, them wonderful animals. They can adapt.
    Ok, now. If I cat could talk and you asked them if they'd rather be free to go for a stroll all by themselves or stay indoors all the time, most would say "Free to roam". But the safest thing is to keep them strictly indoors, so they have fewer xhances of getting into serious trouble. Mine are all indoors only. I lost five cats before I finally learned.

      Thank you Palaka. Max was about 4 when he had the amputation done, he's now about 11 yrs old. I'm sure the vets will offer good advice, cats are very adaptable creatures. All the very best wishes.

    I had a cat that had his eye knocked out when he got hit by a car. Funny how when people lose depth perception, we're all over the place, but my cat? Nah, he was as calculated and aware as he was before.

    I never believed in letting a cat outside because of all the dangers out there for them. We have 8 rescues. One we saved from his mother abandoning him 4 yr. ago. Had him since he was a few weeks old. As he grew he wanted to go outside so bad that he broke through the screens. We had replaced almost every screen in our home over time. We finally gave up when our Vet at the time stated that because he was born from a feral mother, it is instilled in him. He's a hunter and wants to hunt. He's safer inside but it was our decision to make.
    He would come home everyday to come in to eat and visit for a bit or take a nap but he would go back out. This time he was gone for two days.
    Yesterday we saw him limping outside. Rushed him to ER. He has a huge open wound. It's so bad that there is nerve damage and dead tissue. None of us know how it happened. A fight with another animal, caught on a fence, we don't know. What we do know is he might lose his leg and will never be let outside again regardless. Why would any one who loves their fur baby want to chance that? I am mad at myself that I gave in and let him out in the first place. He could have lost his life. Nope! Never again will I allow anything to happen to him. They depend on us to keep them safe.

      I hope your cat is doing well now. I've always worried about my boy having another injury... but his spirit would be crushed if I kept him inside. We all love our cats.

      So sorry to hear about your cat. I'm not qualified to say if your cat should have an amputation... talk to your vet, and your veterinary nurses. I'm sure they will give you good sound advice. Cat's do adapt well and if your cat is healthy I'm sure he'll cope with lots of love and support from you. All the very best to you both.

    My cat just went through emergency surgery to put his organs back in place and still needs to have a leg removed monday. A big concern of mine his his quality of life and happiness as an indoor cat. I would love to let him back outside but am so fearful to do so now. Do you only let Max out under supervision or are you confident he has learned his lesson?

      I'm not a vet and would advise you speak to one ASAP. The kittens doesn't sound well enough to survive. I hope you are able find the help and support you need.

      It took a couple of years before I noticed Max walking on fences... and also jumping from the shed roof to a fence pane. Keep an eye on yours too, you may be surprised!

    aren't those wire fences dangerous for him?

    • @redheadtv967
      @redheadtv967  8 лет назад +2

      +mr mo Yes they could be dangerous but he seems to have learned to be careful around them. And... being a cat... you can't control where he goes. He must be coping ok as he's lived here for about nine years now, as a three legged cat!
