Something about the look of platinum converters is so satisfying. Even without the maki e artwork, regular platinum converters are some of the most beautiful out there in my opinion.

Did you say that the black version was called “Black Mist”?? Dang I’m gonna have to get that...
Background exposition: So, I had a cat named Misty (Lil Mist), who lived a long 18 human years. My family got her when I was in middle school, and before long it was clear that I’d developed a special bond with her - she was my _buddy_ :)
So when I grew up, finished college, and moved into my own apartment, I took Misty to come live with me.
We had many great years together. She was almost like having a puppy - whenever I got home from work, she would run up to me, giving her little chirp-meow (like how a dog might bark), and she would swarm my ankles until I pet her or picked her up.
She even helped to be a litmus test when I started dating people - if a new person came to the apartment, and Misty didn’t like them, that was a good indicator that the relationship wasn’t gonna last much longer, haha.
Sadly, Misty passed away a few years ago of natural causes, but I was with her right until the end. Not long after, I was on the internet, and I sort of randomly discovered that there was a fountain pen ink called Diamine Misty Blue - and it was a shade I really like. I’d always been a writer, and was really into journaling & stationery, etc., but I’d never used a fountain pen.
I ordered a Pilot Metropolitan and a bottle of the ink, and the trip down this rabbit hole began(!). Since then I’ve expanded my collection of pens & inks, but still, anytime I discover a new pen/ink with “Misty” or “Mist” in the name, I must have it - and there are some good ones!
Anyway, so yeah, I’m DEF gonna have to get one of these ‘Black Mist’ Procyon Luster pens... thanks for the heads up, and thanks for the review!

I am totally new to this hobby and I really appreciate your passionate reviews. I don’t even own a fountain pen yet so I’m learning a lot. I’m a teacher whose students are remote learning so, in an effort to counterbalance the hours and hours I spend staring at screens, I decided to dust off my calligraphy dip pens. It has a been such a pleasure to unplug, slow down, and create beautiful correspondence for my friends who are also consumed by technology. Fountain pens seem like the logical next step! I love the look of that champagne gold pen and those goldfish are adorable.

The Procyon has been one of my favourite pen models since the original came out. I got one of these Luster ones in Champagne last year and like it very much. (Except for the dark blue, I found the original Procyon colours uninspiring.) It looks and feels elegant, is lightweight but substantial, comfortable in the hand, uncaps with a quick twist, and like nearly all Platinum pens it's reliable and doesn't dry out. Even for a Japanese nib, these are on the finer side, but they work well. I love the fineness and smoothness of the nib and it even feels a little bouncy. Compared to the Platinum Cool/Balance, it's not much more expensive but has a much better quality nib and body (although the Balance is a good pen in its own way). I feel a lot of thought was put into the design of the Procyon and it shows in both the aesthetics and engineering. Thanks for this review - I was very curious to see what the rose gold version looked like!

Keep the great reviews coming. As for the luxury version, it would be nice to see a Pilot Metropolitan with an upgraded grip section, maybe a brushed stainless steel grip. I would improve the lacquer finish from chipping so easily. It would be nice to see a slightly longer barrel that would accommodate a CON-70 converter.

Very nice review, David! I bought my Platinum Procyon [in Deep Sea Blue] last year after watching yours, Brian Goulet's, and Stephen Brown's reviews of the original Procyon.
One interesting fact that you mentioned in your review of the original Procyon is that its feedback is pleasant and resembles that of a pencil, and it sure does! It is a very pleasant pen and I fill it with Noodler's Baystate Blue, and Diamine Oxford Blue inks.

I love nibs that deviate from the standard fountain pen look. Straight-sided Platinum and Lamy nibs, hooded ones, inlaid ones, and conical ones like on a Pilot Falcon... they may not be as fancy as a huge nib with a bunch of engraving and flared sides, but they just look neat.

  • @carolinemclaughlin4951
    @carolinemclaughlin4951 3 года назад

I don't know about luxury styles for pens, when after a certain pricepoint I care more about getting a gold nib than how fancy the body of the pen is. I do like how rose gold is sticking around though. I love it and I'm glad it's not just a fad that faded quickly. (Honestly I'm someone who went through a phase of hating pink because I couldn't find anything for me that wasn't pink and frilly, so I swerved hard away from it. Now I've come around and enjoy rose gold and millennial pink.)
And that last drop feed looks like a great idea!

Thanks again, David, for another quality review. I don't know about luxury versions of ordinary pens: what I'd like (&, yes, I'm weird) would be that Lamy do the ABC with plastic bits in more colours than just red & blue. Yellow! Green! Orange! Chocolate! Pink! Turquoise!.... I'd buy them all, & use with those colours of ink.

I agree that a tie-in with the star group would have been nice. A starburst laser engraved on the finial would have been nice or a starburst as part of the clip. They could have really been cute by somehow incorporating a black mask on the pen since procyon is also the genus of raccoons.

I saw this Luster on an online retailer site and fell in love! But, since I had just purchased another pen, I couldn’t justify it!! I do have a Platinum converter which I use in my Preppys in order to use bottled ink. But, I am disappointed! My converter does NOT have the cute painted goldfish or koi!! Did I purchase a counterfeit? The converter did come in the same box you showed in the video so maybe it’s a new option that wasn’t available a few years ago when I bought mine. Well, I would love to be the winner of the Rose Gold. It looks stunning! Thanks for the opportunity! Thanks for the review, David! Very nice pen.
In the video, you described the clip as "...chrome plated iron.." Is it REALLY iron (which would be interesting, but highly unusual, and would probably not perform all that well in practice), or is the description as "iron" a bad translation for "steel" (which technically speaking is mostly iron, but is quite different in mechanical properties)? If it really is iron, I would be interested to know how well the clip works in terms of springiness and strength.

I have a couple of Procyon and really like them a lot - affordable and the look and perform great. With these models I wonder why not a new name instead of Procyon? The Preppy, Plasir and Perfonte are all basically the same - nib and feeds are all the same - OK the Plasir is metal - but instead of a different Procyon why not a different name to set it apart? Just a thought. Stay well

I'm a hospital RN so I need a fine pen for getting report and updating cheap paper. However, I am also a journaler and love a nice wet medium nib for that purpose.
It's horrible but not unbelievable that someone would try to scam a pen from you. I was so excited to get the TWSBI Iris 750 vac. It was going to be my main Journaling pen this year. Something pretty filled with pretty ink for opposition to the sadness I've seen in 2020.
I purchased from what I thought was a reputable company and they shipped me a used pen! It wasn't even cleaned out well. Parts of the case was missing and stained. Frustrating. Had to send it back. Right now I'll stick with Goulet pens and Jet Pens. I have had no issues with either company. I didn't realize the fountain pen world can be so ferocious 🤣

I like that brands are making luxury/adultier versions of their pens. As a recent grad it's nice to not have a flamboyant plastic pen in the workplace that is similar to the ones I'm used to.

Love the line of this nib. I'm one of those that love a nice crisp fine line. Great review fig! I agree with you I think it would have been cool to see a star on the final and end cap. Also would have been cool to see the constellation engraved on the nib. Love what you do. Thanks.

Lovely pen. Couldn't agree more about the converters deserving a demonstrator. I would quite like if the grip section was less opaque, to see the ink in the feed too.

Thank you for the review and giveaway! Both colours look beautiful and classy but the Rose Gold is the stunner for me! The Procyon doesn't get much notice but hopefully these new finishes will change that!

This is a nice upgrade to an already fine pen. Those converters are beautiful. I'm not a great fan of demonstrator pens but these converters deserve to be used in one.
