Thanks, but I'm actually basing a song for a metal trio on these ideas. :) All the percussion will be played by a single drummer so I have to remove for example any hi-hat 16ths that coincide with the syncopated toms. The bass does a lot of octave jumps, slides and on certain parts, a 6/8 polymeter (like in your video). The guitar gets a one-note 5/4 polymeter (Ok, technically a 10/16) and some breaks where the drums keep the pulse on the kick drum or hi-hat.

Quite a few artists have demonstrated that if you apply the same rules regarding exploration of timbre and rhythm to analog instruments (kitchenware, symphony orchestras, and everything in between), you achieve a recognizable techno sound all the same.
It's okay. The explanation is straight and simple, yes, the music is also straight and simple and lacks musicality, creativity, personality... Techno can have all that.

This is such a FUN way to learn!! Rather than *explain* how syncopation works, you demonstrate it, then give us a word to associate with it. Giving specific names like 909 and 303 also give you things to actually search for and pick up, without overcomplicating what they are. I love the repeating theme of showing us a few possible choices we can make at certain points (kicks, bass, acid), and demonstrating them, before deciding which one. Swapping the "part" in and out so to speak helps us figure out what part of the song you're talking about in as few words as possible, and gives us a limited and actionable space to play in. Finally, rules 8-10 equip you with tools on how to experience your music and understand your intent. My personal favorite is 9; This is a physical music. It sounds silly, but bobbing and dancing to the beat you're making really helps you not only understand how "danceable" it is, but reminds you that you're making something made to be experienced, and that you should be making something that makes *you* dance.
