In today's guitar lesson we check out the best beginner sweeping exercise - with this one you will make great possible progress with sweep picking in the beginning. If you want to take that technique to the next level check out my new 10 week online course 'Sweep Picking Masterclass': www.bernth.at/sweep-picking
Bernth Brodträger Dig this exercise. I have to say that Ibanez is siickkk. Hans Ruedi Giger would be proud. 10 Steps to Modern Shredding “I’m loving it,” great course fellow shredders. Going to go through material a few times before getting into the Sweep Picking class.🤘
@@jasonday8334 Hey Jason, thanks for taking the time to write that - so happy that the course is helping you grow as a player 🤘🏻 Hope you have fun with all the exercises 🙂
Man I've been playing 20 years, and the sweep has always eluded me because of what you said about the alternate picking part. I'm from before sweeps went real heavy into the mainstream, so I'm still learning to fight my brain on severing that connection. Finally a teacher who understands precisely what my hang up is. Thanks so much man. Will be using this exercise every day from now on.
Imagine being 55 and started playing age 10 in 1976, played pro in numerous different styles of music, (none of them utilizing sweep picking), and trying to learn this technique now. It's like what it must have been like as a beginner, if I could remember back that far, lol.
6 month dabbling guitarist. I gotta say out of everyone I've checked out on youtube you're my favorite teacher. Taking the time to show me how to F*#k it up is seriously helpfull.
Hi Bernth, thanks for another great lesson, and I'm really glad to hear, I don't have to sell my soul to the devil for this lesson! What a relief! I'm still working with the arpeggios from a previous lesson! They really sound good once you get them up to speed, and there just fun to play! I can't wait to get started on this new lesson! I really enjoy your channel, it's been a big help to me, because I'm mostly self taught, and don't know anyone in my hometown, that teaches heavy metal guitar! I've got to say, I really love the new look to your channel, it show a lot of professionalism in what your doing! I thought I heard you say once that you have over a thousand students, wow man how do you teach all those people! You must have a really tight schedule! To have that many students is a testament to how good you really are! Thank You Bernth for another great lesson, and for all you do! It's well appreciated! See You In the Next Video Todd P./USA
your video is so concise and well thought out. I watched another person's video on the same topic and almost wanted to blow my brains out because he spent 6 minutes...6 FUCKING MINUTES ON THE STRUMMING. Thanks for getting on with the show.
Wow I'm not much of a online student. My guitar playing is not really that great I find myself stuck and frustrated but I have been watching and learning different classes and I want to thank you cause I am breaking old bad habits and starting to play correctly and sounding much better which boost my confidence. So what ever level of guitar playing these classes will make you sound better. I want to thank you and highly recommend.
Bernth you're a real genius! You just gave me an idea. The trouble with most players is that they want to speed this technique up, but most of the time they fail. But I've noticed if you practice this slow and make it musical you'll understand how this technique works, Thanks for impacting My playing Bernth!
Awesome lesson. I'll be giving yet another try at sweeping. I'm at the stage where you describe the bad unwanted "pull off" motion, at 5:00, with, "As you can hear that sounds pretty terrible." MMMhmmm, good and terrible is where I'm at with this. LOL! Many years ago I was yet again working on trying to get sweeping to work with my fingers. I still remember when I finally did actually manage to do a smooth and nice sounding 6 note sweep. It happened just as I decided that I suck and would never figure this technique out. So in my frustration I was such noodling around, playing whatever and not thinking about what I was playing....and that's when it happened! I heard myself play a smooth and nice sweep, while not thinking about how to do it. I was shocked and impressed. And as soon as I started thinking about what I did and tried to repeat it, I was right back to sucking and not being able to do it. I gave up at that time. All those years since I still remember that I DID do it once and it sounded great. And I know that I can do it, because I did manage to do it once before. So, this time, I searched for some videos and found yours. I like your instruction, and it's inspired me to try and figure out this technique, again. Over the past 3 years I've been concentrating more on my Blues techniques. I've always loved Blues guitar as well as being a hard rock and metal fan. I've been working on ways to meld Blues with the raw power and greater speed of Metal guitar, looking for ways to mix and join the motifs, scales, and tonal ideas from these seemingly very different styles. Thanks for the instruction and inspiration to try the sweeping technique again!
Well, I started practicing 8:35 to 8:42 . In the video it is 130 bpm and I am doing it with 30 bpm right now XD, well gotta start somewhere I guess. After 5 minutes: I decided to play eighth note triplets instead of the sixteenth note triplets and double the bpm to make it easier to follow. Currently at 66(33) bpm. After 15 minutes: Well I got to 80(40) bpm but this improvement is just learning the pattern right now and it will become exponentially harder to get faster each bpm. Its crazy that I have to at least get to 160(80) which is doubling the current bpm, to get some proper sweep going on. Day2: I got to 100(50) bpm. Well I can switch to 16th triplets now so lets say I got to 50 bpm. I think I am almost at my technical limit and the real challange starts now. I will try to do 15 minutes everyday, lets see. Day3: I spent an hour today. I decided to play with drive on and made it my priority to sound as clear as possible. I didn't increase the bpm today and I even had to go down to 45 then 50 bpm. Apparently muting is much more important than I thought but I think I got it for 50 bpm. Also took videos of my right hand to make sure I am not just picking strings individually rather than sweeping Day4: I was stressed over studying for a final, didn’t practice. :\ Day5: I started pacticing other technical exercises for my left and right hand. I started noting down the bpm’s of every exercise. I did practice sweep at 50 again for a little while.
Dude I salute u for being straight honest while giving us ur advises and techniques I don't know if u would feel my following frustration I am good over all with playing techniques mostly am more than half way of what I usually dreamt of being able to play technically Lately as I try more and more technical advanced "techniques" or even less advanced ones... I do get frustrated with my middle finger issue.. It doesn't seem to work as it used to be it flexes in a an awkward motion and stale while changing strings and became stiffer and it doesn't go along with any of the others as it used to be a friend to any of the other 3 Don't know but it's starting to making me unwanting to grab the guitar.. And iam not even knowing what is that.. No body seems to have any answer for my issue..
Even though I am rather rock than metal player mostly influenced by Ritchie Blackmore I really like your exercises, especially getting rid of the bad habits like "flying pinky" (it's crazy to get rid of it!!!). Anyway the "fake sweeping" you mentioned at arround 6:00 Ritchie uses a lot, for example Knocking at you backdoor final solo and IMHO it kind of fits his stuff.

Hey bernth can i ask a question?
Is it essential to have low action strings in improving my playing?
its not exactly essential, but it is highly recommended. it will make sweeping, and just playing in general infinitely easier.
if i am not using a fret wrap to deaden string noise, should I be muting with my palm on the sweep? or should i just accept that their will be a little bit of string noise when im not using a fret wrap.
