not needing so much ventilation during the washing/curing process is a plus for me as well. this is the best side by side review i've seen of these two products. i'm new to the printing world and really needed this. thank you!
Something you didn't mention that I think is important is that the water washable wastewater needs to have the resin cured out of it before disposing of it.
There are a few solutions below, but I think I favour the simplest idea which in my mind should work well. Store the water in a clear glass or plastic bottle outside where it can get plenty of daylight. The resin should settle and set, separating itself from the water. As a double safety feature, the lid could be removed and the water could be allowed to naturally evaporate.
How do you have your printer set up for ventilation? The only thing keeping me from buying a resin printer right now is that I feel like I don't have anywhere to put it.
I don't have any ventilation, but I do use a side room. There is a smell from the resins but for me it's not too bad. The alcohol used for cleaning is what really smells. I don't think I'd want a printer in a main living space, but any spare room with a window would be fine. Without that option, you will get the smells. If you want to know if you could live with it, get some isopropyl alcohol or Methylated spirits, position it safely and leave the lid off. That's as bad as it will get: )
Great video. I am thinking in changing to water washable resin and say goodbye to IPA. But I recently bought a Anycubic Wash and Cure station and wonder if it works fine with water.
You can, but the impeller in the base of the wash container has two magnets and a bearing, all made of mild/ferrous steel so they WILL rust in time. You could replace the bearing and the screws holding the magnets with stainless steel. versions.
It's not on sale here yet, so I really don't know. I'd guess it will be a little more expensive that the Standard Resin, but the savings will come with reduced alcohol use. But that really is just my guess : )
Hi VOG, I have nothing but failure with water wash. It comes off buid plate nearly every time. I've been printing w ABS like with excellent result. The water based fails 100% on Elwgoo Mars. I heat room, shake bottle, use a tad of Rainex on FEP, use recommend settings, even scrub build plate w baking soda- nothing works. Alcohol, and Acetone wiping build plate doesn't seem to help. I'm at a loss. The ABS like is a pain to clean w alcohol, but it prints perfectly.
The first response is the make sure the plate is properly levelled. It's also a good idea to check if the plate is completely flat. Sometimes a little sanding is needed (as I covered in last weeks video - ruclips.net/video/zfNATNOfojA/видео.html ). Now if your settings are good, it should stick. I never heat, but I do shake well, and the Elegoo resins have never given me trouble. Some speciality resins are hard to stick, but Elegoo is generally fine. Here's a thought... watch the video I've mentioned and download the prime coat file from Thingiverse (it's free). Double your bottom layer count and print JUST the prime coat. It's so thin, it only takes a few minutes. These really do stick well but they can be hard to see, so make sure yours is there. If it works, try the technique I suggest in this video about combining the print and the prime coat. If this fails, and everything else I've said is good, get another bottle of resin and try again. I've never heard of resins going-off, but maybe they do...
Thank you very much :-) I just pre ordered the Mars 3 4K and looking for what Resin to get it seems the water washable one seems to be just as good and overall need less extra stuff and in turn less cost :) thank you bud :)
has the price changed since this video then or something because a litre of the water washable resin is more expensive than the regular by the price of a litre of alcohol.
I think I will attempt this resin and use soppy water in my Anycubic wash + cure station instead of IPA! Any suggestions on how to properly dispose of the water post wash? thanks for your wonderful videos!
That will work fine Fernando, just go easy on the soap or you'll be bathing in bubbles 😁 As for the water, I use the same approach as I do with IPA, which you can see here ruclips.net/video/5U1IshPqmak/видео.html When I'm convinced there's no more resin in the water, I pour this on to a paved area to let the sun and wind evaporate what's left.
All of the different options are preventing me from printing, i have a printer and literally have no idea which resin to add to my cart. And no i cant buy all of them. Im limited to 2. I need a standard for regular printing and i need a castable resin for making jewlrey. I need to work. I dont need it to be the best of the best. I just need to k ow if i get it that it will do what its supposed to. Any advice is appreciated. I have the elegoo pro2

Its so annoying trying to find UK suppliers for products recommended by US contributors (such as lint free non woven microfibre clothes for cleaning fep etc, spring plates for build plates and feps. It appears that the UK choice is Amazon or Amazon.
Although what you save on alcohol you pay in additional cost of water washable resin. Also try curing the prints in water. Im about to give this a go myself but oxygen is supposedly inhibiting proper curing of the outside layer of the models causing the sheen and tackiness
They have equal printability and post processing but how do they mold? Do the water soluble hold up to the hydrostatic pressures? How are they at burn out?

You're really making me want an Elegoo Mars, man. The prints are so clean! The resolution is amazing! The price ain't half bad either. Can it handle off-brand resin?
It is an amazing printer but I can't tell you it's any better or worse than others because this is the only one I've tried. They might all be this good - or maybe this is the best, I really don't know for sure. But I do know it can handle off-brand resins. Every "castable" resin I've tried is off-brand. Here's an excellent resource showing various resins and settings for the Elegoo Mars - docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dV-mvE8IojXSNiUHf8fHf_eHJGAQzbeFEalcP4bdnsg/edit#gid=0
Not the Elegoo... it has a smell and with a good sense of smell you might smell it in a large room, but not through the house. I keep my printer in just one room... I smell it when I walk in (it's not a bad smell either) but nowhere else in the home. However, I've heard that some resins have a stronger odour... bad I couldn't say which.
There's a slight odour to the Standard Elegoo resin, nothing overpowering in my opinion. The Waterbased honestly smelt exactly the same... I couldn't tell the difference : )
You can use water : ) Just be careful with the waste water. Ideally collect it and let in stand in the daylight. This will separate the resin from the water, rather than throwing it down the drain : )

As always a really good review Geoff! But... this is not helping to suppress my desire to buy a resin printer! Every time you make a video I want one even more!
There's things I just can't help you with Dan, and one of those is a desire for nice toys. I could tell you these resin printers aren't worth the money, that they won't give you detailed prints or help you to cast intricate metal objects... But I'd have to lie : )
Hey bud, I am very new to all this. Do you happen to have a screenshot of the settings you use with the Saturn for the washable resin? I am using Lychee as a slicer. I did look at the settings there but it was all dutch to me :)
If the settings are all "dutch" to you, then I would recommend taking the time to learn what they mean, and how they effect your printer. It's not difficult, it just requires you to invest some time. I tried to copy settings and ultimately I just ended up with more failed prints than successes. Now I have everything calibrated I print perfect 90% of time
Very informative, thank you. When my ship comes in again, I am tempted to get the same printer. However, here in South Africa, we have to make do with what is in the market here. Buying overseas may be cheaper in sales price, but shipping is sometimes more than half the total cost and that excludes import taxes. So we do not really score.
Great review, on a side note.. how did you orient the big fisty marine so well? That's such a full plate and it looks like you had no detail loss! Epic!
Hi Mike. Three important points for you. 1, make sure the plate is properly levelled. 2, use the correct settings for your printer with the chosen resin. 3, get your supports right. This video I made may help ruclips.net/video/MU0Cq_bjhy4/видео.html 😁😁😁
Great comparison just not sure it's worth almost double the price. Currently for a 1000G bottle it is $29.99 for the regular and $52.99 for the washable.

Can you share what you have of these? A greeting and thanks in advance.
Unfortunately I can't share Jimsbeanz files with anyone else... they're not mine to share. If he has decided to remove them, then we all need to respect his wishes. However, I'm not sure that's the case at all. When I spoke with him last week he was happy with the idea of my sharing his excellent miniatures with my viewers. I was surprised yesterday when I noticed they were no longer listed. I have written to ask him what's happening but one way or the other, we must all respect the wishes of the maker : )
I just got my first resin Printer and was using SainSmart Rapid UV resin and it had a strong smell of Rust/Dirt that it started to give my mom an asthma attack. I cleaned everything up and purd it back into its bottle. The air clear and everything was ok. I didn't want to spend the night in the ER. Is there a real strong smell to this resin or is there none since I'm looking into getting water-based resins?
My wife responds badly to strong odours. She gets nasty migraines. The Elegoo resins haven't bothered her at all. It's hard to say whether it would be the same for your mother, but I do know different resins have different odours. However, the washable and the standard resins both smelt the same to me... neither seem that strong with the Elegoo brand.
@@vogman Thanks, cant wait. Been charging up for a resupply and think I will hold out and hope this hits the market before I have to spring for something else.
Ideally it should NOT be poured down the drain. If you've seen my Recycle IPA video ruclips.net/video/5U1IshPqmak/видео.html the same principle can be applied to water, essentially UV curing out the resin. With this done, the rest can be poured on a patch of concrete on a warm or windy day to let the elements evaporate the water, leaving at most a miniscule trace of resin behind 😁
After researching it seems unfortunate that the only available option to purchase in Canada is eSUN washable resin - (seen on Amazon.ca.) Did anyone try the eSUN product? Is it any good?
I've just had a look at the Photon Resins list and a few guys have submitted eSun but not the water washable by the look of it... docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1crvzMnt_8NJXAsABinoIhcOjE8l3h7s0L82Zlh1vkL8/htmlview?usp=sharing&sle=true
Hi! Compliments for yours videos! So, i have a problem: i have elegoo mars and the new chitubox 1.6.3 (with new settings) and i ve used this resin, but my elegoo now doesn t print, the resin remains attacked on the fep like a sheet. How i can fix this big problem? Thanks
This happens quite often with resin printing so don't be concerned. The prints didn't stick properly to the build plate. Instead they then built up on the FEP like flat blobs. Empty out all your resin and filter it well to remove any lumps with filters like these amzn.to/2vX26ed . Clean everything well with alcohol, especially the FEP and build plate. Then take your time and make sure your build plate is properly levelled (I cover that in my review video ruclips.net/video/Z-qC9KtOOzk/видео.html ). Most printing problems come from this stage, so take your time and you'll get there 😊 If this doesn't work, then you need to make sure your first few layers stick well. To begin, use a raft as this has a large surface area which helps to adhere. Then adjust the Bottom Layer time. Some resins take longer than others, but if you're using the Elegoo standard or washable grey, try adding 4 seconds. You can increase or decrease this at any time. If this still doesn't work, let me know.
Please tell me you didn't just pour the wash water down the drain! That's my big worry with the water washable. it's still toxic as heck, But you have people just putting it down the drain.
@@vogman sorry I'm probably being melodramatic. D's sergerstion is a good one, I would cure and filter as I do with my isopropyl. Just we are at the wild West stage of 3d printers, we best not giving people reasons to start complaining :)
Unfortunately this is one of those subjective things. What smells nice to one guy smells horrible to another, etc. Personally I don't find the odours from resins very offensive, but I have to add the odour from this resin was less pungent than many I've used. I hope that helps a little 😁 I would always advise working with doors and windows opens. Plenty of ventilation is key.
Some people have used household cleaners on the standard resin. ruclips.net/video/tnGasVwkgMk/видео.html This video from Uncle Jessy shows what I mean. I don't know if you can get any of these cleaners in the uk but would be interested to find out. Great video. Keep up the good work.
it shatters like glass... so for miniatures it's great. not that anyone uses resin printers for practical printing, this stuff is weak by comparison to standard PLA prints with low infill.
not needing so much ventilation during the washing/curing process is a plus for me as well.

I want a SLR 3d printer. The only thing stopping me at this point is that they are kind of expensive and tend to have a small print volume.
I hear you. They're not cheap. Luckily the price is dropping as a whole : )
@@vogman True. I think once they're a little more affordable I will get one. I will be watching your videos for a review when I'm ready to buy.
thanks for the video! really awesome video, first time I hear of this product :)
Thanks George : )
After researching it seems unfortunate that the only available option to purchase in Canada is eSUN washable resin - (seen on Amazon.ca.) Did anyone try the eSUN product? Is it any good?
It's not one I've used yet. Which printer are you using?
@@vogman Original Photon.
I've just had a look at the Photon Resins list and a few guys have submitted eSun but not the water washable by the look of it...

Is there any difference in odor?
To me the odours between the standard and the washable are the same : )
Can't find it anywhere in the US, is it just sold out?
Elegoo tell me they sell through Amazon in the US : )
@@vogman I searched and couldn't find it. It might be out of stock
where do you get it? i dont see it on their website or on amazon
I believe it's due for release in a few days : )
What about cost comparison?
As it's not on sale here yet, I couldn't compare : )
@@vogman Oh. Looking forward to seeing its release then, thanks!
Where did the Ork Warboss come from?
I did place a Thingiverse link in the description : )
@@vogman There's only 19 designs and none of them are Orks. Or the new Imperial Fist Captain.
I use nothing but water washable resin because after clean up, I am not afraid to pour the excess down the sink.
Most printing problems come from this stage, so take your time and you'll get there 😊
If this doesn't work, then you need to make sure your first few layers stick well.
@@vogman ok! I'm trying know, i hope it works. and many thanks
@@vogman it works!!! i try with others models and i tell you
Glad to hear it : D
@@vogman sorry but the second attempt failled. It prints only che fha base of the raft ..then nothing
Try to "lost resin cast" it please :-)
Please tell me you didn't just pour the wash water down the drain! That's my big worry with the water washable. it's still toxic as heck, But you have people just putting it down the drain.
I have to say I did... it never occurred to me not to.
Leave it in a shallow pan in the sun to evaporate, then dispose of the solids as you would plastics.
Excellent idea : )
@@vogman sorry I'm probably being melodramatic. D's sergerstion is a good one, I would cure and filter as I do with my isopropyl. Just we are at the wild West stage of 3d printers, we best not giving people reasons to start complaining :)
A little out of my field topic, but another good video all the same. 🙂
Thanks Ron : )
what about the smell?
The same as the standard resin which to me isn't too bad : )
👍
I am new on “resin” printer and bought washable because of the promise of “less odor” but disappointed!!!!
Unfortunately this is one of those subjective things. What smells nice to one guy smells horrible to another, etc. Personally I don't find the odours from resins very offensive, but I have to add the odour from this resin was less pungent than many I've used. I hope that helps a little 😁
I would always advise working with doors and windows opens. Plenty of ventilation is key.
IPA isn't expensive
Just buy a few gallons instead of small bottles
Some people have used household cleaners on the standard resin.
ruclips.net/video/tnGasVwkgMk/видео.html
This video from Uncle Jessy shows what I mean.
I don't know if you can get any of these cleaners in the uk but would be interested to find out.
Great video. Keep up the good work.
im still waiting for elegoo to make a castable resin.... smh. btw i always enjoy your vids
They told me they have no current plans to develop a castable resin. Shame.
it shatters like glass... so for miniatures it's great.
not that anyone uses resin printers for practical printing, this stuff is weak by comparison to standard PLA prints with low infill.
