  • I decided to go around to all 50 sirens apart of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station community alert siren system while on vacation this year in Dana Point to get pictures of all them before their all gone, since I knew that it would likely be my last time ever to see the sirens still up. On June 26th 2019, it was announced that SONGS will be deactivating them on June 30th and removing all 50 of the sirens shortly after due to the decommissioning of SONGS and the cities of which the sirens are in not wanting to keep them for non nuclear emergencies.
The system was last fully tested for 3, 3 minute alerts on October 15th, 2014. After the final full system test, the NRC told SONGS they weren't required to test or even maintain the sirens anymore since both nuclear reactors were defueled earlier that same year meaning danger levels were too low for siren testing to still be required, but SONGS committed to continue to maintain and briefly test all the sirens for the cities to use for non nuclear emergencies for an extra 5 years after they weren't required to have anything affiliated with them.
The only testing of them after the final full annual test in 2014 was brief boop tests on each individual siren in each jurisdiction from June 2015 until June 2018. Boops were supposed to be done this June, but the jurisdictions with the sirens said they don’t want them, so it wasn’t necessary for SONGS to boop them. It is a stupid move since the sirens are all along the coast, and are still useful for other emergencies besides SONGS, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires, or even severe coastal weather.
But unfortunately, we have retarded city council people in the cities that don’t know what their talking about, and have landmarks to me get removed forever. SONGS’s system has a unique history unlike any other NPP system. The old system was up from 1981/1982 until November 2005 when the Model 120s and STL-10B's were replaced with Whelen 2810s and 2806s that were bolted to the original sirens poles and mounting plates. The reason they kept the original mounting plates instead of getting new Whelen mounting plates was because it was more cost effective to just drill holes through the plates to mount the Whelens.
But now all 50 of the original poles and Whelens will be gone for ever in a few months. I will truly miss their system as it was the first siren system I had ever seen since we have a timeshare in Dana Point that we go to every year in June, and Dana Point is one of the cities in the 10 mile EPZ of SONGS that has sirens, the others being San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Camp Pendleton, and a state park.
I will never forget the unique history and uniqueness of their old system which stood out from all other NPP systems. I can even remember seeing the Model 120s and STL-10s back in June 2004 and 2005. But it just won’t be the same down there anymore without the sirens.
Rest in Piece SONGS Community Alert Siren System. Thank you for your uniqueness and being a part of my childhood, as well as getting me into sirens and making me the person I am today.

i literally remember back in 2016, driving by SP-01, CP-06, and SC-09. It is very sad to see these go. Not only was it the first Whelen i have ever seen (first siren i saw was a SIRcom) but the only siren i've seen in the Oceanside area. RIP SONGS Community alert siren system, you will be missed...

According to the Air Raid Sirens Wiki, SONGS had a system of Sentry 10Vs, 5Vs, and 3V8s. But SONGS didn't like the way they performed and decided to replace them all with the Model 120s that they designed, and the STL-10s.

I am sad that they were removed! I wish I spotted them before! I totally forgot to see SJ-12 on my field trip when I went to SJC mission (This was back in 2/24/22) I could have spot the pole it was on but I forgot too due to the bus going fast and me having forgetting to spot SJ-12! I did not know there was a video of the previous system! Rest in pieces SONGS siren system! You will be missed! Also is there a link to the train video passing by the previous system with SoCal Edison Model 120 and STL-10’s?

+NTX Sirenvators Yes, it’s like saying goodbye to a childhood landmark. But at least I have a Model 120 to enjoy which really made the system unique and recognizable. And I might be able to get a Whelen once they are removed. But it won’t be the same down there without the sirens overlooking everything. I especially will miss seeing the high mounted ones.

+The Chach Amen. Their system was a big part of my childhood, since we have a timeshare down in one of the cities within the 10 Mile EPZ, and is always see the sirens, and I remember seeing the 120s and STLs as well back in around 2004-2005. But it sucks to see the Whelens go as well. It was the first siren system I have ever seen, and it also was the one that got me into sirens in the first place. So it’s a sad sight, but the memories will live on.

My first siren ever I have seen was the one in San Clemente pier. Still remembering my dad saying it was a bird house, but it was a siren. I really wanted one but I don’t think I could get one. I am trying to get a thunderbolt near me to restore it and put it back in service but I don’t think that’s happening. RIP SONGS

UPDATE 12-3-19: I was told by a SONGS worker that I know really well that the sirens will began to be removed next week 12-9-19, I’m thinking of going down and watching the crew uninstall a few, and I have a chance to get one. But this isn’t something I’m happy about at all, and it’s a waste of the jurisdictions to not just repurpose them.

+Simplexpulls3 Fire alarms & more SoCal Edison, (SCE). They are also the owner and operator of SONGS.
And I was told SCE is hiring a 3rd party contractor to remove them which is odd because SCE has the resources to do it themselves because after all, they service, install and uninstall power lines and what not.
They were as well the ones that installed the sirens originally from the start, as well as the ones that replaced the original system with the Whelens. Odd they are hiring a 3rd party contractor.

Why were the model 120 sirens and STL-10B sirens replaced by Whelens?

    • @Duderocks5539
      @Duderocks5539  3 года назад

+NeilPrasad 1905 Because the plant was fussing about the sirens supposedly “aging” mind you they were only 23 years old in 2005. They started discussing about replacing them in June 2004, but the replacement didn’t happen until November 2005 to February 2006. In my opinion they were replaced too early, they should’ve waited a few more years like until 2007-2008, and if they did, they would’ve have gotten 2900s as Whelen stopped making the 2800s in 2006. But now 15 years later after the Whelens were put up, 85% of them have now been removed.

+NeilPrasad 1905 I haven't found any audio or video recordings of either an original system ambiance, or a Model 120 or STL-10 from their system. But the STL-10s of course would sound like any other STL-10. I do have a synth of what the original system ambiance would've sounded like which can be found here: ruclips.net/video/4aW-xk7Oho4/видео.html As well as what the Model 120s sound like. Videos of the Model 120 running can be found on my channel.

+tom__eddsworld Well, I do have good news about the sirens in the Dana Point Jurisdiction. The city will be keeping 7 out of the 8 sirens in Dana Point with the original poles that once supported the Model 120s and STL-10s, and I believe they are swapping out the Whelen 2810s and 2806s for brand new 2900s.
But the sirens in San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, and in the state park next to SONGS, will be removed. But they won’t be removed probably until late this year or next year sometime. And I also am in the process of trying to get a couple of the Whelens.
