Another superb remastering. Unbelievable sound quality. There is a funny story about this symphony that's probably true. Until then the typical symphonies had the strings, mainly first and second violins, sing the main voices, the melodies and the rest of the orchestra just backed them up or made the harmonies. In this one, for the first time the violins were made to play "second fiddle" to the woodwinds and brass which had in charge the main "voices". You can notice that the strings played the same thing bar after bar, only changing now and then. It was so unusal and demeaning to the strings that the rehearsels become somewhat problematic as the string players broke in laughter once in a while after playing the same bar unpteen times. But Schubert managed to produce a remarkably beautiful piece of music. Don't you agree?
@@stupid28273 the original post is correct, as it is referring to the traditional format for a symphony that up to that point orchestras adapted to. It broke the mould, and it's a shame Schubert didn't live to see the popularity of it or the Unfinished, but of course a greatertragedy that he didn't live on to create more orchestral masterpieces.
It's true that the orchestration of Great C major is a ground-breaking achievement. It's profoundly original and colourful. It's just a shame that Schubert didn't have the reputation at the time for the piece to become popular. He never knew that he produced a masterpiece for the ages. It was also problematic, because it requires the wind instruments players to perform well, it's not an easy work for orchestras.

I once heard Krips conduct this symphony at the Hollywood Bowl in the 1960s. Greatness, as in this recording. He has the measure of this massive symphony, Schubert on a level with Beethoven.

I have always liked very much the performances of this great conductor; my youngest daughter has still and plays my old LP's with the magnificent renditions of the Beethoven symphonies with Josep Krips. Many thanks for this wonderful Schubert recording.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser romantischen und literarisch großartigen Sinfonie mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und vor allem brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt melodisch. Der intelligente und unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das weltklassige Orchester im angemessenen Tempo und mit angenehmer Dynamik. Ganz fehlerlos!

Martedì 16 aprile 2024. La lettura di Krips mi appare sempre pulita, "giusta" nella dinamica e nei tempi, espressiva senza forzature. Talora sempre commovente la chiusura del primo movimento, come anche il tema iniziale dei corni.
La differenza la fa questa magnifica e eccezionale orchestra che viveva gli anni migliori. Apprezzate oltre all’ assieme l’intervento delle prime parti. Pur con i limiti tecnici del tempo la qualità è superlativa. Il direttore, di stretta formazione viennese, qui da l’esecuzione in tempi assolutamente godibili( cercando di immedesimarsi nello spirito dell’ autore, portato alla dolce melodia ( lied). This performance is supreme. Only one surpasses this in over hundreds of renditions and that is Wilhelm Furtwangler and Berlin Philharmonic.

I believe you mean the orchestras. Symphonies are works of music. Orchestras are the groups of musicians who perform those symphonies.

krips, is a great Viennese conductor conducting with clarity and lyricism, a great Viennese composer!
This became one of my favorite performances of Schubert's GREAT SYMPHONY.
I think of Krips as "measured" in tempo, but this performance moves right along. One of my favorite symphonies and conductors. Thanks
