    the 2nd quote : 'that which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet' is actually said by Juliet, referencing the fact that the names of things do not affect what they really are (a rose would still possess beauty even if it were called something different) hence the Capulet name she is born with, or the Montague name Romeo possesses are meaningless and should not prevent the two 'starcrossed lovers' from being together and so Juliet criticises Elizabethan society and the unnecessary conflict which has arisen between the households

    The quotation: ‘love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and wake - it’s everything except what it is!’ Is the modern translation. The original quotation is: ‘feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, still-waking sleep, that it is not what it is!’. You cannot quite the modern translation in the exam so use the Shakespeare original version.

    ‘Juliet is the Sun’
    Light imagery = J is a symbol of hope, positivity
    J is a guide for R.
    Sun, light = source of life. Suggests he can’t live without her - foreshadowing
    Metaphor - shows R’s admiration and attraction to her
    Context: Elizabethan people thought the Sun ‘ruled’ the planets.
    Implies Romeo is ‘ruled’ and overcome by J
    J seems strong, powerful
    Gender stereotypes subverted.
    R = admiring, worshipping
    J = strong, powerful, influential
    R is blinded by his love for Juliet
    Sun connotations of astronomy- link to theme of fate.
    Links R + J + fate together... foreshadowing?
    R is obsessed with J, elevates her to otherworldly, supernatural level
    Foreshadows how their relationship is short-lasting
    Sun only lasts a day -> fleeting, passionate

      u could also emphasise on the word 'sun' as something that holds value so i mean that the way average people cannot live without the 'sun' same way romeo cant live without juliet so the the connotation of sun may depict the love between them as romeo cannot live with out juliet resulting in his tragic death of bieng desperate to forever be with juliet he defines the fate of the big star 'sun' and therefore he decides he has the right to change the output of the sonnet and as he is the protagonist he will then decide how the story really goes down not knowing juliet isnt actually dead therefore meaning when its dark [mentality] he cant see the suns appearance even tho its there which means the 'sun' he reffered juliet as was not bieng shown through the dark void left in his mind he let his steariotypical patrachan love for juliet fuel his naive and quick thinking actions which is also show when he frst meets juliet and is so infactuated and naive he decides he marries a girl even when restricted therefore showing how his disobediance can be spread throughout as this was the cause of juliet rejecting her fathers wishes to marry paris as paris is so delude of love he dies for juliets unrequited love as shown at the ending ''stop thy unhallowed toil , vile montague can vengence be persuide further than death?''

    Hi,
    For the 2nd quote (4:20) ‘that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’ you said Romeo said it but I checked the play and doesn’t Juliet say it? Surely this changes the analysis as ‘rose’ no longer references Rosaline…?

    • @clairejones1063
      @clairejones1063 Год назад +3

      Yes, it is Juliet's line. The quote sees Juliet suggesting that it does not matter that Romeo is from her family's rivals - house of Montagues. She is saying that even if a rose has a different name it would still have its beautiful scent. The names Montague and Capulet are extremely important in the world of the play, but Juliet cuts through this by suggesting that whichever one of those you are, is unimportant. This is one of the most profound lines from the play and shows the audience that despite her young years, Juliet is actually very intelligent.

    is a 'plague on both your houses' a volta?

    • @mr.beeves5912
      @mr.beeves5912 2 года назад +3

      I wouldn't recommend explicitly calling that quote a volta, since it is a turning point for the whole play. It isn't really applicable because voltas are largely specific to sonnets in particular. However, you can very easily draw a comparison with that as a turning point - you'll get your marks for structure and one or two for context if you can manage to link it to Shakespeare's own sonnets. Something along the lines of:
      "Mercutio's dying words, 'a plague o' both your houses', mark a sharp turning point for the plot and tone of the play - much like that of a volta in Shakespeare's traditional romantic sonnets."
      Good luck!
